EYEWITNESSES Today, the Feast of the Trans-figuration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision ac-count was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vi-sion of heaven, powerful and mem-orable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Je-sus in his second letter to the church. He writes with au-thority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the mes-sage is “altogether reliable” (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Catholics and Christians

Vatican II had repercussions far beyond the Catholic Church. One of the areas we see his is in our Sunday read-ings. Ever since the Council of Trent in the 16th century, the Catholic Church had two readings at a Mass, one from the Epistles and one from the Gospels. There were several prob-lems with this. First, exactly the same readings were done every day of the week. Secondly, exactly the same readings were done from one year to the next. In other words, Catholics heard the same words time and time and time again.

In 1969, the Catholic Church came out with the new lec-tionary which was known as the OLM! (Much as we at Our Lady of Mercy would like to take responsibility for that, it actu-ally stands for Ordo Lectionem Missae.) It uses a three year cycle and we are presently in year A in which the Gospel of Matthew is read, mostly in order, during Sundays of Ordinary Time.

When a majority of Protestant churches joined together in 1983 to formulate a common lectionary based on the new Catholic model, it marked a major step in healing the divisions among Protestant sects. In addition, since the new lectionary was based on the Catholic version and was done with the par-ticipation of the Catholic Councils of Bishops, it marked a ma-jor change in the separation of Catholics and their Christian brethren.

One of the participating groups in the new Protestant ver-sion was the CCT (Consultation on Common Texts). It has, among others, Episcopalian, Unitarian, Lutheran, Presbyteri-an, Methodist and Baptist churches as members. It also has both the Canadian and the U.S. Conferences of Bishops as members. As a result, the readings in the majority of Christian churches (including Catholics) in America and Britain each Sunday are basically the same.

The Catholic version of the lectionary had far too little of the Old Testament to suit many of the Protestants. We have one reading from the Old Testament each day. As a result, we have less than 5% of the Old Testament covered over the three year cycle. The Protestants added a number of Old Tes-tament readings in addition to the ones that we use. This means the first three readings are the same for Catholics and Protestants, but there are additional readings for Protestants.

In the United States , we use the New American Bible for our translation. In Canada , the Catholics use the New Re-vised Standard Bible translation, which is the version used in the Common Lectionary of the Protestants. As a result, the readings you hear in a Canadian Catholic Church on Sundays have different wording from those in Catholic Churches in the United States, but the same wording as those in many Protestant Churches!

As a result of the Reformation, the Catholic Church banned “private interpretation” of the Bible and discouraged even the clergy from reading the Bible on their own. On the Protestant side, Martin Luther did not like some of the teach-ings in various pats of the New Testament, so he published his own version, leaving out the books he disagreed with.

It shows how much progress has been made when many Lutherans have now accepted the common lectionary and thus have readings from those books Luther had banned, and the Catholic Church not only allows but encourages Bible study. The times, they are a’changing! ~DN
