MAST Association - Members and Shipshape Trainees - News NATIONAL HISTORIC SHIPS UK, PARK ROW, GREENWICH SE10 9NF TEL: 0208 312 8558 The SHTP Project grew from a strongly held belief within NHS-UK that there is a worrying shortage of skills across the historic vessel sector. It started to address this situation and had three main elements: learning to maintain historic vessels, practical seamanship skills and an introduction to historic vessel conservation. It proved to be very successful and it is encour- aging that the majority of the trainees are now employed within the sector. Given that effective communication is very difficult to achieve in the fragmented and geo- graphically diverse historic vessel sector, the idea was put forward to form an alumni associa- tion at the end of the project to facilitate maintaining contact with the SHTP trainees, trainees from previous NHS-UK projects and within each group. Initially it is intended that the MAST Association should include all trainees, mentors and supervisors but the structure allows it to expand to accept individuals from other organisations in the sector in the future. It is also hoped that the online forum will develop into a useful communication tool for the sector as a whole. I would like to thank you for joining the association and we would welcome any ideas you may have on how it could be improved and expanded. I look forward to meeting you at our first event. David Newberry, Autumn 2016

I am delighted to welcome you all as members of the MAST Asso-

ciation.

The association is one of the lega-cies of the Shipshape Heritage Training Partnership (SHTP) Pro-ject which was delivered, between 2014 and 2016, by National His-toric Ships–UK (NHS-UK) in part-nership with Trinity Sailing Foun-dation, Excelsior Trust, Sea-Change Sailing Trust, Dauntsey’s School and the Scottish Fisheries Museum and offered 10 train-eeships for those seeking a career in the historic vessel sector.

The MAST Association has been set up as a legacy of the Shipshape Heritage Training Partner-ship (SHTP) project. Its main aim is to build relationships between all those who took part in this scheme or other training projects, past and future, managed or partnered by National Historic Ships UK via the Shipshape Network.

The Association will:

Create connections between trainees, partners, mentors and supervisors from NHS-UK training projects

Improve the circulation of information, knowledge and job opportunities

Empower the historic sailing sector by providing opportunities to build new relationships

Support new projects and initiatives that will bene-fit individuals or organisations within the Associa-tion

The MAST Association seeks to engage its members in a variety of different ways including: or-ganisation of a National networking event once a year, circulation of a bi-annual newsletter, and promotion of masterclasses and workshops in traditional maritime skills. We are open to any ideas from members about future activities for the MAST Association or ways in which you feel it could help support you. Please contact us at: [email protected] to let us know your thoughts.

Tom Cook - had previous experience sailing a barge and was matched with the Sea-Change Sailing Trust as his host. His love of rig-ging skills has since led him to take a job with TS Rigging based in Maldon.

Fergus Taylor - with a childhood love of ships and experience as a sailing din-ghy instructor, Fergus signed on with Dauntsey’s Sailing School as his host. After completing the pro-gramme, he is now working in the maritime field.

Hugh Langworthy - having worked alongside shipwright Will Stirling, Hugh had practical experience of the skills needed to conserve historic vessels and wanted to learn more. After his placement with Trinity Sailing, he has built on this interest by taking an apprenticeship at Tommi Nielsen’s Yard.

Helen Denning - having sailed with the Ocean Class-room Foundation in America, Helen wanted to learn more traditional skills. She was placed with the Ex-celsior Sailing Trust, then went on to vol-unteer with Trinity Sailing before going to university.

Daniel Taylor - worked at the Plas Menai National Outdoor Centre as an Instructor. His host vessel was a Thames barge with the Sea-Change Sailing Trust and, after completing the programme, he went on to work on board the Fife yacht Kentra in Scotland for the 2016 season.

Gabriel Clarke - be-came a dinghy in-structor at the age of 15 and volunteered on a number of his-toric vessel projects before joining the pro-gramme as a trainee with the Excelsior Trust, Lowestoft. He went on to secure the role of mate on traditional gaff cutter Eda Frandsen for the 2016 season.

Martin Hendry - hav-ing volunteered for Trinity Sailing since 2013, the SHTP pro-ject gave Martin a chance to cement the skills he had learned. He subsequently took the role of second mate on board the 80 foot sail training ketch Ocean Spirit of Moray, owned by Gordonstoun School.

Luke Duckworth -As a previous stu-dent of Dauntsey’s School, Luke was a natural choice for the second Jolie Brise trainee. He continued to work with Jolie Brise as she fitted out for the 2016 season, intending to act as relief mate over the summer months.

Looking for a project? Thames Sailing Barge Beric is up for donation

The owners of Beric are looking to donate her to a charity, trust or an individual with

the time and capacity to restore and revive her as a long-term project.

A traditional Thames Sailing Barge built in 1896 in Har-wich, Beric is one of the last remaining all wood Thames Sailing barges, built originally to carry grain, but at differ-ent times in her life she has moved all sorts of cargoes, and been everything from a houseboat to a nightclub. She is registered on the National Historic Ships Register.

The current owners wish to ensure that Beric is pre-served as a living part of Britain's maritime heritage but know she is now in need of more work to keep her afloat. She is currently being looking after at a shipyard in Fa-versham and is in need of a complete rebuild to prevent her from disintegrating.

Are you that organisation or individual, or do you know of anyone who might be interested? Please get in touch to express your interest or if you have any questions.

Contact National Historic Ships UK or get in touch with the owners directly on [email protected] 07772 342724.
