The almost incomprehensible volume of data generated from new advances in technologies and systems such as mobile phone interactions, social media sites, online searches, as well as sensor technologies and machine-to-machine interactions has given rise to the new and exciting area of Big Data. In order to leverage all the data generated in our interconnected world today, a new career role emerged, that of ‘data scientist’.

There currently exists an acute shortage of data scientists and it is anticipated that this career will grow massively in demand during the next few years with a recent McKinsey Global Institute report projecting a 50% gap between projected demand and supply by 2018.

This program has been designed to prepare you for this exciting new role.

Most organisations are not yet effectively using this information to support their business objectives and operations.

This program aims to produce graduates with the analytic and technical skills to effectively extract useful information from ‘Big Data’ to support the management and operations of an organisation.

Data Science can be defined as the broad use of data and quantitative analysis for decision-making. It brings together the best of data management, analytic methods, and the presentation of results.

In the Master of Data Science, students undertake a number of courses covering a variety of topics, providing experience in applying the concepts to real-world problems, develop skills in leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution and negotiation, presentation of results, professional writing, data visualisation, data cleaning, privacy and security, and project management.

Graduates of the program will be awarded industry certification by SAS.

Careers in Data ScienceThe demand for analytic skills is increasing at a rapid rate and across multiple industries world-wide. Approximately 69 percent of businesses are interested in using analytics.1 In addition to an increased need for statisticians and operations research analysts, fields such as marketing, health care and finance are also experiencing a need for analytics professionals.2

If you like playing with data, have a sense of adventure and enjoy discovering relationships in data and the links between the data and the business activities that create the data, this program is for you.

Breadth and DepthThis program has been designed to provide a coherent and comprehensive coverage of data science and its application in a professional context. Graduates will have the breadth and depth of knowledge, techniques and skills in professional practice to be immediately useful within an organisation as a data scientist.

Industry focusedThe Master of Data Science has been designed in conjunction with industry, including the Institute of Analytics Professionals of Australia (IAPA) and SAS.

Practice FocusedLearn by doing – the program contains courses that emphasise professional practice, requiring students to apply analytic techniques and tools

to real data sets. Students will work on a problem from industry or research. Other skills covered include communication, team work and project management and some technical skills such as visualisation.

Flexible learningThis program offers the opportunity to study on campus or fully online with options of full-time or part-time study.

Seamless TeachingThere is a consistent approach to the on-line learning resources across the program, and you will study in an environment in which communication with other students and your instructors is facilitated and encouraged. Both internal and external students will share a common learning environment and software tool environment.

Entry RequirementsApplicants are required to have:

■ A Bachelor degree in Information Technology; OR

■ A Bachelor degree in Mathematics; OR

■ Completed the Graduate Certificate in Data Science; OR

■ Completed the Graduate Diploma in Data Science.

Alternative tertiary qualifications may be considered on an individual basis; please contact the Program Director.

Program informationThe Masters program consists of 72 units of study. The first semester enables students who enter with a mathematics or information technology background to develop, through providing alternative pathways for each, a set of foundation skills on which the remainder of the program is built.

The next two semesters each consist of two core data analytics courses and a 9 unit course where students apply the theory and techniques to realistic problems in a professional development context. The final semester consists of two advanced data analytics courses and a 9 unit capstone project.
