Overview
TheMSWprogrampreparesstudentsforprofessionalleadershipinsocialworkinthepromotionofsocialandeco-nomicjusticethroughtheachievementofcompetenceinafieldofpractice.
ThecurriculumisdividedintotheFoundationlevelandtheConcentrationlevel.TheFoundationcontentiscom-prisedof21credithoursandfocusesonthedevelopmentofgeneralistknowledgeandskillsinsocialwork,includ-ingarequiredfieldpracticum.Concentrationcontentiscomprisedof30credithoursandfocusesonthedevelop-

Full-timeRegularStandingMSWstudents(non-BSWgraduates)arerequiredtotake60credithoursandbeginstudyoftheirchosenconcentration(ClinicalorPPA)duringthesecondsemesteroftheregularprogram.Full-TimeAdvancedStandingstudents(BSWgraduates)arerequiredtotake39credithours(7952Research+Concentrationcourses)andbegintheirconcentrationworkuponenteringtheMSWProgram.

SW7971requires400clockhoursfor4hourscreditswhichgenerallyinvolvesthreedaysperweekatthefieldsite.

Independent Studies
Studentsmaywishtotakeoneoftheirelectivecoursesasanindependentstudy.Suchcoursesfocusonthestudyorinvestigationofadefinedproblemortopic,orreadingsinasubstantiveknowledgeareawhichmaylegitimatelybethebasisofindependentstudy,isrelatedtoyourchosenconcentration,andisnotavailableasaregularcourse.StudentsmaynottakeindependentstudiesasasubstituteforrequiredFoundationorConcentrationcourses.

ParticipantsintheGerontologicalSocialWorkCertificateprogrambuildawarenessandexpertiseforworkinset-tingsthatserveolderadultsandtheirfamilies.Participantsaretrainedinmicro,mezzo,macroandclinicalstrate-giesknowntobeeffectiveinworkwitholderadultsandtheirfamilies.Aninterdisciplinary,multi-levelemphasiswillbeprovidedintheprogramsincealargecomponentofeldercareisthecoordinationandmanagementofservicesprovidedbyvariousdisciplines.Courseworkwillutilizeabio-psycho-social-culturalperspectiveempha-sizingtheecologicalperspective,Lawton’stheoryofenvironmentalpress,resiliency,andthefunctionalagemodeloffamilywork.Inaddition,studentswillbuildawarenessofagingpoliciesandservices,andpoliciesthatimpactpersonswithdisabilitiesandwomen.

MSW/MPH Dual Degree ProgramFull-time, regular standing students can earn a MasterofSocialWork (MSW)anda MasterofPublicHealth (MPH)withanemphasisin HealthPromotionandPolicy.Graduatesofthedualdegreewillbewell-positionedtofindemploymentasahealthpolicyadvocate,healthagencyadministratororinanintegratedbehavioralhealthsettingasacaremanagers,healthcoach,patientadvocate,counselor,orteamleader.Studentspursuingdualdegreesmustbeindependentlyadmittedtoeachprogram.Only Regular Standing (RS),full-timeMSWstudents(bothclinicalorPP&Aconcentration)willbeadmittedtotheprogram.

Leave of Absence

Studentadvisementisanimportantpartofthestudent’seducationalexperience.Theadvisorysystemhasthefollowing purposes:
1. Toprovideeachstudentwithafacultymemberwhoknowsthestudent’seducationalinterestsandgoals,his/herparticulareducationalprogramandwhoservesasaresourceinassistingthestudentinhis/hertotaleducational experience; and

StudentsareassignedtheiradvisorsbytheMSWProgramCommitteebeforethestudents’firstregistration.Effortismadetopairstudentsandadvisorsbasedoncareerinterestswhentheyareknown.
StudentswithAdvisorswhoareon9monthcontractsshouldplantomeetwiththeiradvisorbeforetheendoftheacademicyeartoplanforSpringregistration.StudentmayseekadvicefromtheMSWProgramDirectorwhenissuesofconcernariseduringSummersemester.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Advisor
Theadvisorhasprimaryresponsibilityforhelpingthestudentmakemaximumuseofher/hislearningopportunitiesand,ingeneral,actstoadvancethestudent’sbestinterests.
Specifically,theadvisor:
- consultswiththestudentregardingher/hisshort-termandlong-rangeeducationalgoals.Assiststhestudentinmakingchoicesfromthecourseoptionsavailabletomeethis/hergoals.
- helpsthestudentassessher/hiseducationalneedsandobjectivesregardingthetwofieldplacementswhileconsideringpotentialresources;

Student Status Review
Preamble
TheSchoolofSocialWorkchargesafacultycommitteewiththeresponsibilityforthestatusreviewofanystudent’sacademicperformanceandprogressintheclassroomandinthepracticumsettingwhichviolateexpectationsofperformanceappropriateforasocialworkstudent.
Socialworkstudentsareexpectedtoestablishandmaintainprofessionalrelationshipsatalllevels,bothwithinandoutsidetheclassroom(withfaculty,staff,andstudents;withindividualclients,groups,thecommunity,andothers).Thisentails,amongotherthings,adheringtostandardsofacademichonesty;respectingselfandothers;andbeingabletocommunicateinwaysthatarenon-exploitativeofothers.Moreover,socialworkstudentsareexpectedtosubscribetoandabidebythevaluesandstandardsofthesocialworkprofessionasexemplifiedintheNationalAssociationofSocialWorkers(NASW)CodeofEthics.
Thestudentmayappealthefacultycommittee’sdecisiontotheDirectoroftheSchool.UponreceiptoftheCommittee’sdecisionandtheminutesofthehearing,and/oranappealfromthestudent,theDirectorwillactuponthematterandimplementthedecision.TheDirectorwillcommunicatethisdecisiontothe

1. AwrittenrequestforStudentStatusReviewwithsupportingmaterialmustbemadetotheChairofthefacultycommittee.Suchrequestmustspecifystudentperformanceand/orconductthatnecessitatereviewofthestudent’sstatus.
2. TheChairofthecommitteewillforwardtherequestandsupportingmaterialtomembersofthecommittee.Thecommitteewillreviewtherequestanddetermineiftheissuesmeetrequisite

conditionsforstudentstatusreviewwithinten(10)workingdaysfollowingreceiptoftherequest.Ifthematterfallswithinthepurviewofthecommittee,thecommitteewillsetadatefortheStudentStatusReview.Thenotificationtothestudentwillbeinwritingandwillspecifytheallegeddeficienciesinperformanceand/orconduct;andthedate,timeandlocationofthereview.Thenotificationwillbedeliveredtothestudentbystudentemail,specifyingdeliveryreceiptandreadreceiptrequested.Thenotificationwillalsobesenttothestudent’sadvisor,andtheDirectoroftheSchool.TheStudentStatusReviewmeetingwillbesettoconveneatleastten(10)workingdaysfollowingwrittennotificationtothestudent.Theten(10)workingdaysnotificationprovisionmaybewaivedattherequestofthestudentor,withthestudent’swrittenapproval,atthecommittee’srequest.
3. ThepersoninitiatingtherequestforaStudentStatusReviewmayrequestthatsuchreviewbecanceledordiscontinuedbysubmittingawrittenrequesttotheChairoftheCommitteegivingreasonsfortherequest.Uponreceiptoftherequestforcancellation,theChairoftheCommitteeshallpollmemberstodeterminewhethercancellationisappropriate.Suchrequestwillbemadeasearlyaspractical.
4. ThepersoninitiatingthereviewmustbepresentduringtheStudentStatusReviewprocess.
5. Astudentwillhavetherighttopresentdatawhichchallengestheallegationsnecessitatingthisreview.
6. Astudentmayaskupto3individuals(faculty,staff,orpeerstudents)toaddresstheCommitteeonhis/herbehalf.TheseindividualswillbeinvitedtoattendthemeetingtomaketheircommentsbutwillnotattendthefullStudentStatusReviewsession.
7. Astudentwillbeabletoquestionanyoneparticipatingintheproceedings.

Follow Up to Student Status Review Committee Meeting

Dismissal Appeal Process
Initiation Procedures
1. ThestudentmustnotifytheMSWProgramDirectoroftheirintenttoappealadismissalwithintwoweeksofreceivingnoticeoftheirdismissal.TheletterofappealshouldbetypedandsubmittedtotheMSWProgramDirectorbypersonaldelivery,regularorovernightmail,orasaWorddocumentattachedtoane-mail.Appealswillnotbeacceptedbytelephone.Thisrequestmustprovideevidenceforwhythedismissalshouldbeoverturned.Withinten(10)workingdaysfollowingreceiptofthestudent’sintenttoappeal,theMSWProgramDirectorwillcommunicatetothestudenthowthepro-gram-levelappealsprocesswillbeconducted.
2. TheMSWProgramDirectorwillforwardtherequestandanysupportingmaterialstothestudent’sad-visor.Theadvisor,orinher/hisabsencetheMSWProgramDirector,willorganizeanAppealsReviewCommitteetohearthestudent’sappeal.
3. TheAppealsReviewCommitteewillconsistoffacultymemberswhowereinstructorstothestudent

duringtheperiodofconcern,thestudent’sfacultyadvisor,MSWProgramDirector,FieldDirector,ifrelevanttoissuesofconcern,andonefacultymemberwhowillbeinvitedbythestudent,ifs/hesochooses.Thisinviteemayattendthemeetingorsubmitwrittencommentsonthestudent’sbehalf.Adjunctinstructorswhoarenotabletoattendthehearingduetoschedulingconflictsmaysubmitawrittenstatementforreview.
4. TheAppealsReviewCommitteewillsetadateandtimeforanappealhearingwithinten(10)workingdaysofreceiptofthenotificationofappeal.
5. Notificationoftheappealsprocess(see#1)andmeetingdate(see#4)willbedeliveredtothestudentbyemailwithadeliveryreceiptandwillincludethedate,timeandlocationofthereview.Thestu-dent’sresponsetosaidemailisconsideredknowledgeoftheappealhearingdate,timeandplace.Ifthestudentdoesnotrespondtotheemailwith48hoursofdelivery,thehearinginformationwillbesenttothestudent’shomeaddress(asnotedinMyZou)byregisteredmail,specifyingreceiptrequested.ThenotificationwillalsobesenttotheDirectoroftheSchool.
6. TheAppealsReviewCommitteewillmeetassoonasispractical.
