The ever-growing impact of climate change, military conflicts, rapid urbanization and economic crises present a clear need andopportunity for qualified professionals in both developed anddeveloping countries.

The students of the Master of international Cooperation in Sustainable Emergency Architecture will acquire the necessary knowledge to manage complex projects in international cooperation, emergency architecture, and sustainable development in which governmental and non-governmental institutions, beneficiaries and technical staffs are involved.

The Master degree delves on three main topics: international cooperation, sustainable development, and emergency architecture. Professionals involved in these topics need to understand that their role in the complex system of international cooperation must seek holistic solutions that integrate interdisciplinary knowledge and citizen participation. The Master program includes courses that will help implement and complete this necessary multidisciplinary approach with alternative planning, urban and architectural strategies in order to promote social cohesion.

The students will be introduced to different contexts and situations in order to acquire the proper skills to develop a critical analysis and management capacity of complex problems.

The course provides the students with the necessary knowledge on the management of international humanitarian response systems for post disaster situations, as well as international cooperation development projects. In both cases there is an emphasis in the role and responsibilities of the professionals involved in the process.

The course also analyzed examples of urban upgrading in diverse contexts. It is essential to understand the physical, social and cultural substrate of the cities or territories in which we are going to intervene. It is also essential to analyze the context at all scales throughout the intervention process in order to establish a critical approach and proposals in accordance to its urban legacies.

This Masters Programme forms part of the Erasmus Mundus European cooperation programme. The Mundus Urbano programme is a joint European Masters degree programme offered by the following universities: Technische Universität Darmstadt, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Université Pierre-Mendès-France Grenoble and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The programme provides students with the necessary theoretical and methodological background in order to develop an interdisciplinary approach and manage projects in cooperation and sustainable development ranging from the urban to the architectural scale. They will also learn to maximize human resources to deal with and support local actors in post-disaster scenarios in both developed and developing countries.

MODULE 1: CRITERIA 29,5 ECTS. This module provides the student with theory, methodology and specific case study analysis in the field of international cooperation, sustainable urban development and emergency architecture. Courses will provide a specialized methodological approach that encompasses both the urban and the building scale. Students will acquire scientific knowledge based on international research and perspectives from different sectors that contribute to a global vision. Case studies will involve cooperation issues in developed and developing countries, as well as areas undergoing reconstruction. The aim is for students to acquire a holistic understanding of all the processes involved in international cooperation and post-disaster based on practical knowledge of complex local situations.

MODULE 2: FIELDWORK 15 ECTS. Includes a Fieldtrip that intends to incorporate topics which offer students the opportunity to apply different tools and strategies in accordance to diverse approach and contexts, but with the common objective of having the students recognize and value the main arguments that are in the foundation of contemporary urban regenerating and growth projects as well as identifying their emblematic references.

As well, students will complete a 3-month internship with relevant institutions and organizations in order to familiarise themselves with the development and management of projects in the field of cooperation

MODULE 3: WRITING THESIS 15,5 ECTS. Students are required to produce a Master Thesis in the field of international cooperation, emergency architecture and sustainable development that should reflect the multidisciplinary nature inherent in designing and managing urban and architectural projects.

Each student will have an assigned supervisor to guide their thesis development.
