Presentation o Objectives
There is a clear need or qualied proessionals in developing
countries who can develop projects and manage urban-planning
processes. These countries have some o the highest urbanization
rates in the world and it is here where international cooperation is
most needed. However, issues related to high-speed transormationare also afecting cities in developed countries in the northern
hemisphere.
The impact o earthquakes, tsunamis, migration and war make the
situation even more critical, with intervention required in the areas
o construction, architecture and urban planning. Plans must be
implemented or temporary development and settlements using
quick construction processes that are ecient under extreme
conditions. Existing resources have to be managed and solutions
ofered that can be implemented in this type o situation where
work must be done under diferent orms o pressure.
The purpose o the Masters Degree in International Cooperation
in Sustainable Emergency Architecture is to prepare uture
architects and proessionals to deal with these situations and
develop urban planning, housing and emergency construction
projects. The proessionals will be able to deal with regionalplanning, settlements, and emergency reconstruction. They will
employ specic tools to apply appropriate strategies in order to
support the development and recovery o afected communities.
The programme thereore aims to establish strategies and criteria
or taking action in the areas o urban planning, neighbourhood
development and implementing architectural projects; while
bearing in mind energy ecient systems and sustainability
standards in all areas related to materiality and local cultures.
Further, the programme will train experts to provide solutions to
large-scale problems generated by massive and sudden change,
proessionals who can study and conduct research on materials,
city planning, economics, environmental and social aspects, all
based on principles o sustainability.
This Masters Programme orms part o the Erasmus MundusEuropean cooperation programme, which is considered tobe one o the most prestigious programmes in the world. The
Mundus Urbano programme is a joint European Masters degree
programme ofered by the ollowing universities: TechnischeUniversitt Darmstadt, Universit di Roma Tor Vergata, Universit
Pierre-Mends-France Grenoble and the Universitat Internacional
de Catalunya in Barcelona.

Aims of the Masters programme
Students will acquire the necessary knowledge
to be able to manage complex projects inwhich governmental and non-governmental
institutions, beneciaries and technical staf
are involved. Students will be able to organise
the tasks based on an interdisciplinary
approach, they will also acquire the necessary
methodologies and tools to manage projects
ranging rom urban to architectural scales;
maximizing human resources and building the
capacity o uture generations to deal with andsupport local actors in post-disaster scenarios.

Programme Structure
The programme is divided into three terms, each with a specic
aim, with the nal purpose o preparing students to develop a
thesis on action methods in complex and ragile post-emergency
situations.
TERM 1 CRITERIA, Students will attend ull day workshops andpart-time seminars. During this academic period, students will
develop short projects and will acquire knowledge on the use
o appropriate planning mechanisms and resources based on
local culture and sustainability principles with the objective osupporting development and recovery or afected communities.
This will involve establishing the criteria and strategies or action
at the urban scale, developing neighbourhoods and implementing
architectural projects such as public acilities and post-emergency
housing.
TERM 2 FIELD TRIP & INTERNSHIP includes a trip outsideEurope to see places with developing needs or places that need
uture responses and settlement reconstruction ater crises.
Students participate in an internship with a company or institution
working in an area o international cooperation.
TERM 3 STUDIO PROJECT, students develop their individualresearch projects under the supervision o a tutor. The master
thesis will ocus on specic post-emergency scenarios, urban
development, prototypes and disaster management. This parto the programme includes lectures on practical matters and
methodology to assist students in developing their research
projects.

Methodology and Evaluation
Students must attend at least 80% o the
theory-practical classes. Students will be
evaluated each seminar and workshop.
In January, students will submit a written
report to the committee on the research
they plan to carry out in TERM 3 STUDIO
PROJECT, along with a summary o the
structure and content o their theses.
At the end o the programme, students will
deend their theses beore the academic
and/or proessional committee, made up osector specialists and experts.
Internships
In the second part o the course (FIELD
TRIP & INTERNSHIP), students will
travel to a place in which to ollow
in situ the process o a project in
International Cooperation, to carry out the
corresponding eldwork activities. Students
will also participate in an internship with
non-governmental organizations (NGO),
governmental and other institutions in
the eld and working on reconstruction
projects.
Thesis and Research Work
In the third part o the course (TERM 3
STUDIO PROJECT), students will prepare
their theses, which will be supervised by
their tutor. Students can select a topic rom
the ollowing areas: urban development,
prototypes and emergency management.
In the third part o the course, students will
attend conerences given by experts, who
will talk about diferent subjects related
to the programme. Students will alsoparticipate in sessions in which they receive
guidance on research writing.

University o Genoa, Italy. She is co-ounder o SELF Arquitectura
and she won many architectural and urban international
competitions. Some o those projects have been published in
monographers o Italian architects under 40. She was invited at
Biennale di Venezia o 2004. She is author o diferent articles o
architecture in specializedreviews and international publications.COORDINATORRaquel Colacios
Architect and Master in International Cooperation: Sustainable
Emergency Architecture at ESARQ School o Architecture, UIC. She
is proessor and co-director o the Cooperation Area o the ESARQ.She is co-ounder o the rm Taab6 Architects in Barcelona, whose
activity extends to countries like France, Belgium, Vietnam, and
India among others. She has won several architectural and urban
competitions, including a European prize in Prnu, Estonia.

Course reservation and enrolment
Reservation
Candidates accepted into Masters or Postgraduate courses will be contacted by post.
Your place in the programme can be efectively reserved by depositing the stipulatedamount or the programme at any La Caixa savings bank oce no later than ve days
ater receipt o the letter inorming you that you have been admitted to the programme.
The amount deposited will be subtracted rom the total amount due or the programme.
Once the reservation ee has been paid, i the student does not meet the course
prerequisites as determined by state legislature or autonomous regulations, does
not hold the required degree or does not efectively register, the UIC will reund the
reservation ee in ull.
I ater paying the deposit the student should choose o his own volition not to pursue
the course o studies, the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya shall become owner,
with no obligation to reund, o the entire amount received as a deposit on the place as
compensation or the damages caused.
I the student does not pay the reservation ee within the time period indicated, it will be
understood that he or she is no longer interested in accepting the place in the course,
and the UIC will cancel his or her spot, rendering the corresponding application null
and void.
Enrolment
The registration period will be communicated to the people admitted who have reserved
their place once all the anticipated places in the programme have been assigned. Ater
ocial registration, you will have 10 calendar days to make a single payment o the
outstanding amount due.
