Place Theory

The place theory goes one step beyond figure-ground and linkage theories in that it adds thecomponents of human needs and cultural,histor ical and natural contexts(Trancik, 1986, p.98).

It gives physical space additional richness byincorporating unique forms and details indigenoustoits setting.

In place theory; social and cultural values, visualperceptions of users, and an individual control overthe immediate public environmentare important

principles.

More importantly, the identification of places, as wellas their organization into mental structures, not onlyallows people to function effectively but is also asource of emotional security, pleasure andunderstanding.

We take delight in physically distinctive, recognizablelocales and attach our feelings and meanings to them.

Place character is often recalled with affection; its lackis a frequent subject of popular complaint. People are

pleased to "know" a great city, or to understand itshistory.

Karakter kota (Trancik, 1986)

Karakter fisik, lebih ditujukan kepada penampilanbentukan fisik bangunan dalam sebuah kota yang dibentuk

oleh komposisi massa dan ruang dalam skala tertentu.

Karakter non fisikmerupakan karakter yg ditinjau dari

hubungan antara manusia dengan lingkungan sosial

budayanya, dan digunakan sebagai backgrounddalammembentuk lingkungan fisik tertentu.

Pemahaman tentang nilai suatu tempat (spir i t of p lace)

merupakan pemahaman tentang keunikan dari suatu tempat,

sehingga tidak akan terlepas dari karakter yang membentuknya.

Karakter yang spesifik merupakan identitas dan pengenalan

bentuk serta kualitas ruang sebuah daerah perkotaan, disebut

sense of place.

is one of many characteristics which displayedby people congruent with local identity
