Principal’s News
What a busy week we all had last week! Tuesday was the annual welcome barbecue hosted by the P. and C. and it was terrific to see the large number of families who made the effort to join us on that evening.
Wednesday was our National Ride2School Day and it was fantastic to see nearly all students and staff, several parents and siblings and even a couple of grandparents join in the spirit of the day. During the day students were exposed to a range of bike and road safety activities including a bike maintenance session, an explanation of road rules, discussions and demonstrations of what to wear when cycling and the opportunity to ride around our own bicycle course, putting our knowledge of safe riding and pedestrian rules into practice. Congratulations to all those who participated and many thanks to Steve Ross, Coolamon Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer, for joining us for the morning session and providing valuable input.
On Thursday the whole school travelled to Ganmain for a presentation on early white Australian history by bush poet and entertainer, Geoffrey Graham, who was in the area for this year’s John O’Brien Festival. Geoffrey – and his student assistants - kept everyone entertained throughout his performance of storytelling, singing, reciting poetry, dressing-up and whipcracking. Following the performance there was an Aussie trivia quiz, some bushdancing and then an Australian movie to finish off the day before returning to school. That afternoon I had the pleasure of accompanying our John O’Brien Festival Writing Competition winners - Chontal Costello who gained first place in the Infants Poetry section, Connor Smith who was awarded second prize in the same section and Max Hatty who was awarded second place in the Lower Primary Poetry section - to the Narrandera Library where they were presented with their certificates and prizes by Noel Stallard (Fr Patrick Hartigan / John O’Brien). Again, congratulations to all students who entered the competition and many thanks to those parents who travelled to Narrandera for the award ceremony.
Thursday night’s P. and C. meeting was quite well attended and a lot was discussed with regards to organising activities throughout the year.
Today we have Isaac Matthews, Fraser Menzies and Keiran Steward playing as part of the Coolamon-Ardlethan P.S.S.A. A.F.L. team at the Eastern Riverina Gala Day. A team will be selected at the end of the day to play against Western Riverina at Jerilderie. We wish these boys the best of luck today.
Don’t forget our Easter scripture service that is to be held at the Matong Uniting Church Hall tomorrow, Wednesday, 24th March, commencing at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and a light morning tea will follow.
The school’s new website is now live and open for the world to access. By typing www.matong-p.schools.nsw.edu.au you can see what is available so far. Over the coming weeks more pages will be added for your interest.
Enjoy the week.
Regards,
Ian Lucas

Sports Grant and Athletics Carnival
Last week we were advised that, in conjunction with Narrandera Public School and Narrandera High School, we were successful in obtaining a grant to promote sport in our school and community. Part of the grant entails training of staff which is to take place on the last two days of this term. Because of this training, our small schools’ athletics carnival has been brought forward by one day and is now to be held at Ganmain P.S. next Tuesday, 30th March. All students from kindergarten to year six will be involved in this carnival. Students are asked to be at the ground by 9.30am ready for a 10 am start. This means we will leave school at 9.15am. If your child is not using the school bus on this day, please let Tracie or Val know. It is hoped the carnival will finish by around 2 p.m. Students will need to wear their sports uniform and bring along their recess and a water bottle. Lunch will be available from the Ganmain P. and C. or students may bring their own from home. A canteen price list is attached. There is no need to order, items can be purchased on the day. Transport to and from the day will be by private transport. Students living in Ganmain may make their own way to and from the carnival if parents so wish. Please complete and return the permission note at the end of today’s newsletter by this Friday
Raffle
Raffle tickets and money for the monster raffle that is being run by Coolamon Rotary Club are now coming in thick and fast which is great to see. All proceeds from the raffle and community day are being channelled back into local schools and there are some great prizes on offer. Remember, the more tickets we sell, the greater our financial return from this fundraising initiative. Don’t forget that all tickets must be returned, whether sold or not, no later than this Friday, 26th March. PLEASE SAVE US THE TIME AND EFFORT OF HAVING TO CHASE UP OUTSTANDING BOOKS AND MONEY AT THIS VERY BUSY TIME OF THE SCHOOL YEAR BY ENSURING YOURS ARE RETURNED ON TIME. Many thanks for your support with this fundraising venture.
Mobile Library
Mobile library day is tomorrow. Students are reminded that borrowed resources should be returned to the box in the hallway before the end of recess.
Interim Reports
Term 1 reports are to be sent home by the end of this week. These are designed as a guide to how students are performing during the early stages of the year. If anyone would like to discuss their child’s progress or any aspect of this report, please contact their class teacher for an appointment.
UNSW International Subject Competitions
Students in Years 3-6 who are interested in taking part in this year’s competitions should complete the form that was sent home with last week’s newsletter and return it, accompanied by entry fees, to school by Friday, 26th March.
