Virtualizing your SAP infrastructure
Matt LestockInfrastructure Architect
Key Learning Points
Understand the fundamental concepts of virtualization and the value it brings to your SAP infrastructure.
SAP in a virtualized environment can meet even the most rigid uptime and business continuity requirements.
VMware virtualization technology enables customer to realize immediate cost benefits, while deploying business continuity strategies which would otherwise be too costly to develop and implement.
Accurately sizing SAP installations for virtual infrastructures.

Keys To Efficiently Realizing A Virtualized SAP Landscape
Understanding the value and capabilities of a virtualization platform in an SAP environment.
A clear definition of requirements today and a vision of tomorrows.
Understanding the differences between sizing a physical SAP landscape and a virtual landscape.
Selecting the right software and hardware, that meets today’s needs and grows seamlessly to meet tomorrows.
Engage a team that understands the unique requirements of SAP, and can successfully translate and implement those requirements into a virtualized landscape.

Technical Review
What are SAPS? SAP Application Performance
Standard (SAPS) is a hardware-independent unit of measurement that describes the performance of a system configuration in the SAP environment.
It is derived from the Sales and Distribution (SD) benchmark, where 100 SAPS is defined as 2,000 fully business processed order line items per hour.
What are IOPS? IOPS is the standard unit of
measurement for I/O(Input/Output) operations per second. This measurement is a performance-based measurement and is usually seen written as:
Total IOPS: Average number of I/O operations per second.
Read IOPS: Average number of read I/O operations per second.
Write IOPS: Average number of write I/O operations per second.
14
Hardware Capability
For approx $50,000 it is possible to spec a 32-core quad Xeon X7560 system with 512GB of RAM.
For comparison, to achieve similar performance benchmarks utilizing an IBM Power 750, one would have to spend well over $125,000.
The latest generation Intel Processors can now perform as well as their RISC counterparts in high performance computing applications at a much more reasonable price.

No Two Situations Are The Same
What is your unique situation? Project Timeline Budget What is your current SAP
environment? Are you currently running any
virtualization? Are you also pursuing an SAP
Upgrade at the same time? Is your Datacenter running
out of space, power, or cooling?
What is the Project’s Vision?
Less servers to maintain? More flexible CPU &
storage configuration? High Availability? Disaster Recovery? Data Backup? Allow for growth with
minimized cost?
Understanding your current environment, future needs, and goals is critical to successfully virtualizing your SAP environment.
