And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: " Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.

What are the Beatitudes?

1. They deal with the state of one’s heart.2. Man puts much emphasis on the outward, Jesus on the

inward.

The Term “Blessed”

1. It is deeper than happy, it includes peace and contentment.

" Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1. These individuals know and understand their spiritual dependence upon God.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15

Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.2 Corinthians 7:9-10

short of the glory of God.
