Forget youth camp “lite”, Let’s do something that matters, was the motto of youth camp this year. In June our Proclamation Group, and our Youth group went on a mission trip to La Marque, for youth camp. This “youth camp” was unlike any camp our students have ever before taken part in. We moved off the posh University campuses where dining is an extravaganza of options, rooms are dorm rooms with two students to a room and showers are at worst community dorm showers. A typical day at Centrifuge camp begins with breakfast. Breakfast is followed by an elaborate showy worship. From worship students go to a Bible Study led by camp counselors them head off to rec. After rec., students congregate in University dining halls and try to out eat each other in Blue Bell ice cream. After lunch students go to track time where they can choose from classes like STOMP to Art. From Track time students head into a free time where they usually nap. After nap time, dinner; after dinner extravagant worship followed by a fun activity. At the end of the week the weary students have had a “good time”. Meals were prepared in the church kitchen, and while good ( thank you Betty Thrasher for your chocolate pie recipe.), they were nothing like a University Cafeteria. A typical day was breakfast at 7:30 am. After cereal, we would head off for our quiet times before meeting in the worship center for VBS at 9:00 am At VBS the students led bible studies, craft times, rec times, and were tour guides. They, under Maggie’s direction, did all the work. After a morning of VBS they would eat lunch, then head out to work sites where they ripped down ceilings and were drenched in fiberglass, painted various locations or ripped up old decks. Around 4:30pm they would head back to FBC LaMarque. Dinner would be waiting for them. Some would have to wash fiberglass off with hoses before dinner, because shower time wasn’t until after 6:00pm. (The nice shower was a horse trailer converted into shower stalls, the other shower was a red railroad container with 4 stalls built in. Neither shower had air-conditioning so showering at 9:30pm was the preferred time.) After dinner, we would drive to a church that allowed us to do a worship set. Then back to the church where the day was finally over, and showers were open. Spoons, spades and speed were played in the fellowship hall. When this camp is contrasted with the “fun youth camp” our kids said, they would prefer do something that mattered. Did they have fun—yes!!! Ask Taylor or Robin about winning the A-Team beast award, a piece of pipe. Ask Cheyenne or Rachel what their first time at the beach was like. Ask Sam O about scooter races in the sun with a bunch of grinning children. Ask Levi about Ms Darleene. Ask Nathan about wrestling. Ask Jared or Samuel about ice cream at DQ. Ask anyone on the proc team what it is like to spend 9 days living all out. Thank you to Ryan, Aaron and Maggie who didn’t take the easy way out this summer. A few pics found on FB: ~Rachel . What the students said about a Mission Camp. I facebooked the students that went to see what they thought about Mission camp, and a few weren’t so tired they replied.

A group from Young @ Heart has just returned from a train ride and tour to Oklahoma City. Twenty three folks went on this fabulous trip and toured the National Monument and Museum as well as some other sites. If you have never visited this monument and museum, you are missing out on a great blessing. To see the site where the hate in one man’s heart hurt so many people was something to behold. The four days we spent together was refreshing. We had good food, saw lots of interesting things, met some very interesting people

and had a great time of fellowship with each other. And by the way we laughed till we cried.

I would like to say thanks to Robert Aldape and Ms. Jeannie, for their assistance on the tour, and to Steve Hines for introducing us to his friend, Matt, who made it possible for us to stay at the Sheraton hotel.

I would like to use this opportunity to remind everyone 55 years old or older that Young @ Heart is not just a program for those who come to our fellowship on Tuesday. This program is for all senior adults in our church. I know some are still working and cannot take part, but when possible, please feel free to join us. Watch the bulletin
