Welcome Back Home

I don’t know about you but I’m feeling very excited seeing God’s people return back home. It’s quite moving and comforting to have you return back home to St Jerome. The families of the family of God are returning back to their spiritual homeland. Anyone who has been made to leave their home forcefully, knows what it means to be welcomed back home. It should feel pretty good and uplifting.

The parish church is a home for pilgrims to the heavenly home-land. With the love of the Father and His children in Jesus Christ, the parish church is the most important home in the world today. It is a spiritual home where we gather at the table of the Lord to break bread and have spiritual fellowship in the name of the Lord. Overall, the parish church is where we have this incredible en-counter with Jesus the Lord and experience our lives’ most impor-tant moments. It is at the church that the people of God gathered together makes tangible the encounter of the head and the body in a supernatural communion; the foretaste of the festal gathering in heaven. It is at the church that the memorial per excellence (do this in remembrance of me) is relived and made visible. It is at the church that the Lord feeds his flock with the bread of life, the Holy Eucharist.

So when we were forced into exile as a result of the COVID-19 contagion and regulations, parish churches retreated into the at individual persons’ homes. Today, it is so exciting to see us mak-ing this gradual return to our spiritual home, where communion and fellowship with the Lord will both be spiritual and tangible. For our brothers and sisters who are yet to return home, we hold you in high esteem and pray that it may be well with you in Christ Je-sus. You can be one with us in worship even if you are not physi-cally at church. With love as our guiding principle, the loving thing for many to do will be to stay home for a while. Just know, we can’t wait to behold your faces when it pleases God to bring you home.

As returning pilgrims, it is perfectly okay to feel strange and uneasiness. The events that made us to flee our spiritual home has necessitated some tempo-rary changes. As one people of God, our goal is to be safe and sound; united as a community in worship and love. It is our desire to accomplish this goal, in a way that is as safe as possible and to convey our love and care for each other through the way we prepare and participate at Mass.

We can show our love by going out of the way to keep others safe. Even beyond physical safety, following the protocols helps everyone feel safer. This is a tan-gible act of love, for instance wearing masks is a very important precaution, and a visual symbol of your care for others. Your mask helps keep others safe and lets them know you are attending to their safety. In due time, it will come to pass and Jesus Christ, the corner stone is doing something with us and for us.

As we gather, though still wounded and afflicted but not destroyed, the Lord will continue to remember us, His flock and pilgrim Church. May He continue to stretch out his Hand to us in our suffering. May He perfect in us the work of His love. It’s joy giving that we, the living stones in Christ Jesus, are returned to offer spiritually to offer sacrifices acceptable to Him the almighty Father. Welcome home to St Jerome!

Fr. James
