CHURCH OF ST. CHARLES BORROMEO ST. ANTHONY, MN

From the Pastor’s Desk

I had hoped to announce that Mass will be resuming tomorrow, May 18, but at the time of writing this, no official announcement from the Governor has yet been made. So instead, keep praying that we’ll be able to celebrate Mass together again soon, and enjoy this Easter season reflection from St. John Henry Cardinal Newman:

C hrist has promised He

will be with us to the end,—with us, not only as He is in the unity of the Father and the Son, not in the Omnipresence of the Divine Nature, but personally, as the Christ, as God and man; not present with us locally and sensibly, but still really, in

our hearts and to our faith. And it is by the Holy Ghost that this gracious communion is effected. How He effects it we know not; in what precisely it consists we know not. We see Him not; but we are to believe that we possess Him,—that we have been brought under the virtue of His healing hand, of His life-giving breath, of the manna flowing from His lips, and of the blood issuing from His side. And hereafter, on looking back, we shall be conscious that we have been thus favoured. Such is the Day of the Lord in which we find ourselves, as if in fulfilment of the words of the prophet,

"The Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with Thee. And it shall come to pass in that Day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: but it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light." [Zech. 14. 5-7]

Nay, even before the end comes, Christians, on looking back on years past, will feel, at least in a degree, that Christ has been with them, though they knew it not, only believed it, at the time. They will even recollect then the burning of their hearts. Nay, though they seemed not even to believe any thing at

the time, yet afterwards, if they have come to Him in sincerity, they will experience a sort of heavenly fragrance and savour of immortality, when they least expect it, rising upon their minds, as if in token that God has been with them, and investing all that has taken place, which before seemed to them but earthly, with beams of glory. And this is true, in one sense, of all the rites and ordinances of the Church, of all providences that happen to us; that, on looking back on them, though they seemed without meaning at the time, elicited no strong feeling, or were even painful and distasteful, yet if we come to them and submit to them in faith, they are afterwards transfigured, and we feel that it has been good for us to be there; and we have a testimony, as a reward of our obedience, that Christ has fulfilled His promise, and, as He said, is here through the Spirit, though He be with the Father. May He enable us to make full trial of His bounty, and to obtain a full measure of blessing.

"There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her and that right early ... Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge." [Ps 46. 4, 5, 10, 11.]

St. John Henry Cardinal Newman

Newman’s coat of arms, with the motto cor ad cor loquitur—heart speaks to heart. An extensive explanation of it can be found at http://www.newmanfriendsinternational.org/en/cor-ad-cor-loquitur-john-henry-cardinal-newmans-coat-of-arms/ St. John Henry Newman, canonized

just this past October, was a 19th century convert from the Anglicanism. An intellectual giant, he was a very well known and respected and beloved Christian apologist and spiritual leader in an increasingly secular modernist time (it was a great, dramatic national scandal in England when he converted to Catholicism).

His many wonderful sermons can be found on NewmanReader, org

Dear St. Charles Parishioners, We're approaching mid-May, and there is much anticipation about getting back to Mass for the public. I know that this time has been especially difficult. There are a number of definitions of the

word communion, and in a Catholic community we rely on all of them. We have students eagerly awaiting the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. We have people anxiously waiting to be initiated into our Church, and we are still left with more questions than answers.

Instead of giving you advice on how to navigate these times, I will just pass some on: "Pray, hope, and don't worry." St. Padre Pio, pray for us! God bless you, Danny Kieffer St. Charles Principal

Stewardship

Below is a snapshot of Sunday Giving through April 30 as compared to budget and a year ago; Capital Giving compared to pledge is also presented. Our deficit to budget for ten months of $(118,398) only grew by $(3,530) from last month despite no public Masses in all of April – who anticipated such a generous response? For the month, Envelope Giving of more than $112,000 exceeded budget by more than $12,000; a significant portion coming through electronic means (41%) and more either mailed in or personally delivered (69%) – such love! Reported economic concerns guards our optimism – please keep doing whatever you can to help! We remain open and working hard (in new ways) in these extraordinary times. Together with your prayers and financial support, St. Charles Borromeo continues to bring Jesus Christ in union with the Roman Catholic Church to His disciples, old and new.

“The month of May, is a time when the People of

God express with particular intensity their love

and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is

traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at

home within the family. .For this reason, I want

to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty

of praying the Rosary at home in the month of

May. . . .The key to doing this is always

simplicity.” ~Pope Francis

CGS is coming and we need YOUR help!

MAY 17, 2020 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd “ We believe that there is a deep bond between God and the child which produces in the child the desire to draw nearer to God. The catechist’s role is to prepare the environment and to give selected presentations from scripture and liturgy that “call forth” the child’s response rather than “pours in” information. The catechist listens with the child and together they ask, “God, who are you? How do you love us?” The adult reflects with the child on the questions generated by the presentations with the materials offered to the child to aid the child’s reflection. The atrium (or prepared environment) is one of the important elements that help the relationship between God and the child to flourish. After a theme has been presented, the child is free to choose an activity that will make possible the inner dialogue with the ‘Interior Teacher.’” (from CGSUSA.org– visit that page for info on the CGS method.)

J esus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over

elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.”

Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

John 10:1-10
