Lackland Elementary students take top honors in the annual citywide VIA poster contest! Third grader Lisbeth
Yandun-Mera won the 1st place trophy for her grade level. Third grader Brianna McCabe won the 2nd place trophy! These awards are a huge accomplishment with over 6,000 entries into this year’s contest. Our girls beat out several hundred third graders after rigorous
judging for these top awards. Lisbeth received a $100.00 savings bond while Brianna got a $50.00 bond.
They, their parents and art teacher Mr. Garcia were treated to a terrific luncheon at the Architecture
Foundation. Thanks to the great sponsors including VIA, Disney Radio, The Express News, AIA and Clear Channel
Outdoor.
In addition to these top award winners 5 other students made the top 10 in their respective grade levels and will receive
special ribbons and certificates from VIA. They are 3rd grader Brian Felder, 4th grader Veronica Crawford, 5th graders
Aubrey San Nichols and Isabelle MacDonald, 6th grader Serena Davis. They will be recognized during the morning

The students realize after they graduate what a great place they had at Stacey. The size of the
school district makes it possible for the faculty and students to develop supportive relationships for
the success of all. Many of the Stacey students are able to be involved in activities that wouldn't be
possible in a larger district.

Mrs. Solis Attends her First COLLEGE Graduation of One of Her Former Kinder Students!
Kindergarten teacher, Mrs.Helen Solis, was so happy to be invited and to be able to attend the COLLEGE
graduation of April Johnson, one of her former Lackland Kindergarten students!
April was in Mrs. Solis' 1995-1996 Kindergarten class! April graduated from Texas A & M, in College Station,
this past Friday, May 11. April is the daughter of Stevelyn Johnson, our elementary office's attendance clerk. Mrs. Solis and all of the Johnson family are so
proud of April!
Mrs. Solis has attended many of her former Kindergarten students' high school graduations, but this
was the first time she had ever attended one of her student's college graduations! She was very honored to watch one of her students graduate from college and to
see her all grown up and ready to go out into the professional working world! WOW!
The Complexity of Language
Do you ever wonder why we have noses that run and feet that smell? That should be the other way around!
Language is the ability to understand what people say and express your own thoughts and ideas. English is a funny language. It can sometimes be hard to understand.
Just remember that there is no egg in eggplant or ham in hamburger or pine in pineapple! Thank goodness for that!
Captain Good Reader came to read a story to Mrs. Allen’s SFA class. The students listened to him with enjoyment! Every week, students receive a
message presenting a new “skill” to learn from Capt. Good Reader as part of the “Word Power” Reading program. On Monday, the students were surprised
to have a visitor to the room. Thank you for the gold coins so we can remember our strategies!
