2 | Welcome to St. Cecilia Catholic Church

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Are you or anyone you know interested in exploring the Catholic Church as your church home? Have you been sitting in the pew next to your Catholic spouse for years wondering what you have to do to become Catholic? Statistics show that most people respond to a personal invitation. So this is that personal invitation and a challenge to all of us who might know someone who fits the categories above. Invite that person! If you are an adult or know an adult or child over the age of 7 interested in becoming a Catholic and celebrating Baptism, Confirmation or First Eucharist with this community, contact Jo Anne Dalhoff at [email protected] or call the parish office at 515-233-3092.

On the weekend of July 12/13 our parish will be hosting the annual Mission Co-Op Appeal sponsored by the Archdiocese of Dubuque. This year’s missionary will be Sister Marcine, O.P. a member of the Adrian Dominican

Sisters from Adrian, Michigan. Sister is looking for someone who could offer her hospitality for the night on July 12th. I will be out of town and Fr. Braak who will be covering the parish will be staying at my residence. Since I will not be here I do not want to burden a visiting priest with the additional duties of hosting a guest. If you would be willing to host Sister Marcine overnight on July 12th, please contact the parish office by May 23, ph. 515-233-3092. Thank you!

"On Monday, May 26, 2014, at 11AM at the Cathedral of St. Raphael, Dubuque, there will be a Mass and reception honoring Archbishop Emeritus Daniel W. Kucera, O.S.B., who is celebrating his 65th anniversary of ordination. The public is invited to attend. Archbishop requests no gifts."

PERSEVERANCE

An attitude of gratitude is one of your best allies in developing the will to persevere. As with the previous eight virtues discussed in this series, the ability to persevere is strengthened when we are grateful. Gratitude plays a vital role in developing the ability to persevere because any time you are striving to become a better disciple and steward there will be setbacks along the way. Setbacks can either defeat us or define us. Being grateful for the progress you are making along the way gives you the strength to persevere and continue to journey.

The stewardship lifestyle is very counter cultural. People may question why anyone would choose such a path. This is why perseverance is so important in making stewardship, you may struggle at first with the initial changes required of you to become a better steward. It is not always easy to separate yourself from the demands and possessions of this world. However, by persevering in your stewardship journey, you will experience many surprising rewards along the way. “Stewardship is the right thing to do; its rewards can’t be kept out!” (Most Rev. Eugene Gerber, Bishop Emeritus of Wichita, Kansas). For example, a healthier mind and body is one of the rewards of persevering in stewardship. Our bodies are a gift from God for which we should first and foremost be grateful and of which we should be good stewards. If you have a goal of being in better shape physically, mentally or spiritually, reaching that goal will require some perseverance, and discipline. With every dream of something better there is always some struggle between the dream and the realization of that dream. The formula is always the same: Dream—Struggle-Victory! It takes perseverance to get through the struggles and experience victory.

Who you are is God’s gift and who you become is your gift to God. Those who become their best, as God intended, rely on the power of the Holy Spirit working in them. “His power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine.” (Ephesians 3:21). They will also have developed the habit of persevering. God wants to sculpt you into something great and your cooperation is required. Be patient and persevere! This article is part of series of 12 reflections on stewardship virtues by Dan Potvin, Director of Stewardship for the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, Canada.

Rachel's Vineyard Invitation To Mother's that may be struggling with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion....there's Hope! Rachel's Vineyard retreats are a beautiful opportunity for any person who has struggled with the pain of a past abortion. This retreat is a very specific biblically based process designed to help you experience the mercy and compassion of God. It is a safe place to release repressed feelings of anger, shame, guilt, and grief. There are many exercises to help you grieve the loss of your unborn child and to receive and accept God's forgiveness. The retreat concludes with a Memorial Service. The weekend will help your soul find a voice and through the power of the word of God transform the pain of the past into love and hope. Go to: Rachel's Vineyard Ministries or 1-877-HOPE-4ME to find a re-treat nearest you.
