MAY 19, 2019 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Reecting on God’s Word A while ago the Lysol ® brand of cleaning products was promoting a new toilet brush, one that has the liquid cleanser and disinfectant stored inside the handle. Televi- sion became its midwife, promoting it as the new genera- tion of toilet bowl cleaners. The ad concluded with a se- ries of housewife testimonials, the nal one of which aested, “It has changed my life!” It was but another ap- peal to our hidden longing that our lives be made new. Or consider the abundance of television makeover pro- grams, even a surgical makeover—the “extreme” makeo- ver. Each of us in some way longs to be made new, some- times vicariously and sometimes personally. One of the paradoxes of life is that the more we seek ourselves, the more we lose ourselves; and the more we are willing to lose ourselves, the more we nd our- selves. It is, of course, only another way of speaking about love. It seems to be a simple rule of thumb. If your life is in chaos or disarray, if you nd yourself unseled and discombobulated, then forget about your own life and begin to focus on the lives of others. It is how love works, if indeed love does any work at all. It is love that makes us new. It is the ultimate makeover, simply be- cause God is love. Weapons and war will never create peace; only compassion will, and justice, and heartfelt care for all of humanity. Punishment and the inhumane conditions of prison life will never remake the soul of one who is incar- cerated, only hope for a future and a nurturing of the hu- man spirit will. More liturgical regulations and prescrip- tions will never bring deepening faith life to our eucharis- tic assemblies; only love for one another will, and the healing we so desperately need. —Rev. Featured Book for May Signs of Life:

By Dr. Scott Hahn Signs of Life is a clear and comprehensive guide to the Biblical doctrines and historical traditions that

underlie Catholic beliefs and practices. Devoting single chapters to each topic, the author takes the reader on a journey that illuminates the roots and significance of all things Catholic, including: the Sign of the Cross, the Mass, the Sacraments, praying with the saints, guardian angels, sacred images and relics, holidays, daily prayers, and much more. In his appealing conversational style, Dr. Hahn presents the basic tenets of Church teachings, clears up common misconceptions about specific rituals and traditions, and responds thoughtfully to the objec-tions raised about them. Each chapter concludes with loving, good-natured, inspiring advice on applying the Church’s wisdom to everyday life.

Feature resources may be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3-4 donation is suggested to allow the parish to continue

the program and offer new material.

Thank You for Supporting Your Future Parish Priests! Mundelein Seminary would like to express its gratitude to Fr. Jerry Jacob, the staff and parishioners of St. Mary of the Annunciation Par-ish for participating in our Teaching Parish Program this year. For many weeks our seminarians spent time at your parish to gain the pastoral skills necessary to become holy, joyful parish priests. We are so grateful for the ways you have welcomed our seminarians into your community, homes, and lives—and you are a vital part of their priestly formation. Thank you for your continued prayers and support of Mun-delein Seminary. Please join us in praying a novena for all the semi-narians who will be ordained as priests this year. Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

St. Christopher Magallanes, priest, and Companions, martyrs Saint Christopher Magallanes was a Mexican priest whose years of ministry coincided with an extreme anticlerical era in Mexico. He was falsely accused of promoting rebellion and arrested while on his way to celebrate Mass. Christopher was killed without trial after absolving his executioners, saying, “I die innocent, and ask God that my blood may serve to unite my Mexican brethren.” He and his companions died between 1915 and 1928. He was canonized by Saint Pope John Paul II on May 21, 2000, along with 21 priests and three laymen, also martyred for resisting the anti-Catholic Mexican govern-ment of the 1920s.

Missionaries of Mercy Paul’s back! After last week’s “violent abuse,” opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the “energizing evangelist,” transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul’s past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation’s future “new heaven, new earth” should inspire our optimism. But Revelation’s present assurance, “Behold, God’s dwell-ing is with the human race,” should challenge us to become “missionaries of mercy,” because Pope Francis declared that the Church’s credibility is completely dependent on our showing uncondi-tional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to life’s noblest virtues. Fittingly, in today’s Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Here are two stories to enjoy and ponder.

There was a little old lady who was very spiritual who would step out on her porch every day, raise her arms to the sky and yell, “Praise the Lord.” One day, an ornery man bought the house next door to her. He did not believe in God and insulted and

mocked those who did. Thus, he quickly became very irritated with the spiritual lady. So after a month or so of her yelling, “Praise the Lord” from her porch, he went outside on his porch and yelled back, “There is no Lord.” Yet, the little old lady continued. One cold, wintry day, when the little old lady couldn't get to the store, she went out on her porch, raised her hands up to the sky and said, “Help me Lord, I have no more money, it's cold, and I have no more food.” The next morning, she went outside, and there were three bags of food on the porch, enough to last her a week. “Praise the Lord,” she yelled. The cranky atheist stepped out from the bushes and said, “There is no Lord! Ha-ha, I bought those groceries!” The little old lady raised her arms to the sky and said, “Praise the Lord, you sent me groceries and you made the Devil pay for them!”

_____________________________________________

One day, a man went to visit a church. He got there early, parked his car, and got out. Another car pulled up alongside and the driver got out and said “I always park there! You took my place!” The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, “That's my seat! You took my place!” The visitor was somewhat dis-tressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing. After Sunday School, the visitor went into the body of the church and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, “That's where I always sit! You took my place!” The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still said nothing as he slid over. Later, as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up and his appearance began to change. Horri-ble scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, “What happened to you?” The visitor replied, “I took your place.”

________________________________________________ The Lord today commands us to love one another. These stories, though humorous, should remind us of what that love looks like in practice. Such love goes beyond mere emotion and sentiment to true concern and committed service. May we grow step by step in the prac-tice of this love. St. Mary Garden Ministry St. Mary of the Annunciation is very blessed with its rural setting and beautiful campus. The abun-dance of flowers, plants, trees and shrubs gives us abundant opportunities to experience God through the beauty of nature. Our meditation gar-

den with its meandering paths and shrines to the Holy Family and St. Francis provide an exceptional environment for prayer and reflection. With the size of our grounds, maintaining the beauty of our gardens and flowerbeds for all to enjoy is no small endeavor. We need much more help with this important effort, and so we invite you to join our Garden Ministry. No experience is necessary, just a willing heart and up to 1-2 hours of your time per week through the Spring and Sum-mer. You may sign up for your own garden area and work on it ac-cording to your availability each week. Or you can join in a group maintaining a larger area. The Coordinator of the Garden Ministry, Richard Peterson, will provide overall guidance on plants and what needs to be done in each area so that everything fits together. Please complete the form below return to the Parish Office (in person, via email, or drop in the collection basket). For more information, please call or text Richard Peterson @ 708-514-1849. ST. Now that we have successfully addressed our construction debt (together with the ample assistance of the Archdiocese), the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign is moving into its final phase. Pledge payments are now being directed towards the various capital projects that were included in the campaign vision, most especially repaving our aging and deteriorated parking lots, completing the rehab of the Little Church basement (for use by PADS and other parish ministries), and other needed capital improvements to our campus. While we have reached several very significant goals in this campaign, we still have a ways to go. Currently, there are more than $879,000 in outstanding/scheduled pledge payments remaining in the campaign. These pledges are critical to achieving the final and very important goals of TTWCI. If you have fallen behind on your payment schedule, we ask that you please make up as much of the delay as possible. All gifts are crucial to achieving the vision and reaping the benefits of the campaign. Naturally, the sooner we re-ceive the funds, the sooner we can begin the intended projects. You will find the latest financial details on the campaign in the report below. Again, thank you to all TTWCI donors for your gen-erosity to St. Mary and the campaign! And we will let you know as soon as we schedule a “burn the mortgage” celebration to mark the retirement of our debt! 2. St. Mary Capital Projects to be funded by the campaign include: repav-ing our parking lots and remodeling the little church basement for use by PADS and parish groups.

HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION: The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is to promote the word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that “whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me.”

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY “Patients need to be able to trust their doctors to always care for their lives and never deliberately cause death… Patients facing serious ill-ness may feel hopeless and de-pressed, as though their lives have lost meaning. Addressing psycho-logical, emotional, and spiritual problems is essential to palliative care. Assisted suicide alleviates none of these problems, but gives in to them.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activ-ities “Killing the Pain, Not the Patient: Palliative Care vs. Assisted Suicide”

Prayer for Life Father and maker of all, you adorn all

creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart rever-ence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious

gift of life. Grant this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and

Please join us on Monday, May 20 7:00 to 8:30pm

As we kick off “Mental Health Mondays”. Attending these monthly meetings will: ♦ Deepen your faith, understanding God’s heart toward those who

struggle with mental health difficulties and disorders. ♦ Help you see the strength of working together by prayer and practi-

cal support ♦ Help you grow more confident and hopeful as you learn practical

tools to implement with loved ones and yourself ♦ Help you see greater change within our Catholic community, break-

ing the stigma of mental health difficulties and disorders in the church and society.

Each “Mental Health Monday” a different aspect of mental illness will be discussed from a practical and spiritual standpoint. There is no cost to attend. Workbooks will be used to facilitate the discussion.

If you have any questions regarding this program, contact Dcn Al Sedivy [email protected] or Dcn Jerry Nora (St. Mary of Vernon) [email protected]

The Memorial Day Mass will be held Monday, May 27 at 9:00am

in the Old Church. If you are a relative or friend of a deceased Veteran, The St. Mary Military Ministry invites you to have your loved one prayerfully remembered at the Memorial Day Mass. Please contact Diane in the parish office to have your loved one’s name added to the list of names that will be recited at the Mass. Prayer for deceased Veterans: O God, by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest, look kindly on your departed veterans who gave their lives in the service of their coun-try. Grant that through the passion, death, and resurrection of your Son they may share in the joy of your heavenly kingdom and rejoice in you with your saints forever. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ST. MARY CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME MINISTRY tip: Consider “going green” for your next party. Each year Americans toss out enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times. If your gathering is too large to use your regular tableware, there are some good options. Look for biodegradable and compostable products made from bamboo and other materials. One member of our ministry did this for her daughter’s graduation party...and while the 100 guests were a bit surprised, it was very easily accomplished to avoid using disposables! And it made for a wonderfully elegant celebration! Get the conversation started on how we can all make small changes in how we care for our common home—the earth!

Rita of Cascia: May 22 Saint Rita of Cascia lived in Italy from 1377 to 1457. Against her wishes, her parents arranged for her to marry a man who ended up abusing her. She had two sons with him: both followed their father’s bad example. Rita’s husband con-verted toward the end of his life, but he was mur-dered by an old enemy. Her sons died soon af-ter. Rita was refused entrance to an Augustinian

monastery several times because she was a widow, but eventually she was admitted and lived there until her death. She is depicted with a wound in her forehead because she asked to suffer in union with Jesus and was given a wound from a thorn in his crown.

Infant Jesus of Prague: September 27 The Infant of Prague is a small statue of the Child Jesus, made in Spain and brought to Bohe-mia by a young princess who had been given the image as a wedding gift. She presented the stat-ue to the Carmelite fathers in Prague. One day, praying before the statue, one of the fathers heard a voice say, “The more you honor me, the more I will bless you.” Since then, the statue has drawn millions of the faithful from around the

world, and replicas of the image are venerated in countless churches. The well-loved image shows Christ as a child, and yet a king: an in-fant, robed in majesty and crowned with authority. The image of the Infant of Prague reminds us that we have Lord who rules with gentle-ness: we have nothing to fear. A statue of the Infant of Prague has been present in our little church for decades. When the time came for us to build a new church, the people of the parish were quite clear that a similar image should be included. This statue was carved for us by Andreas Comploj, the sculptor who carved all of the statues in the big church. The Comploj firm is located in the town of Ortisei in the northern Italian alps.
