MUFTI DAY/SAUSAGE SIZZLE This Friday 22nd May our year 6 student council is holding a mufti day and American Hotdog & sausage sizzle. Fundraising for Matariki. If you would like to order a sausage for lunch please fill in the slip on the next page. Kia ora,

By golly, I got a bit bean happy last week at our big breakfast. Really, could a school eat 7 large tins? Obviously not!!

Thank you to those whanau who took the extra kai home. You saved my bacon. Each Tuesday I cook baked beans alongside

some eager Master Chefs. We usually cook half a tin. If you would like to get some beans sent home on a Tuesday please

email me or let the office know. I hate good kai going to waste.

My lovely E for ENERGY elective group have been looking at muesli bars this term. Holy! the sugar in those suckers is

immense. My favourite bar has 4 teaspoons of sugar in it. Makes me want to reach out for something else to snack on. Our

aim is to provide you with a recipe for healthier options– one that tastes as good as it is healthy. Look out for that soon. This

group is also running our sausage sizzle this week– a little treat option for mid term. Please help us raise funds. All money will

go towards Kahurangi, the most stunning cultural show currently around. Our aim is to make this a free show for all. Please

dig deep and its one less kai to make on these cooler mornings.

At assembly this week I said I was ‘old and cold’. The air was nippy and sitting in front of me were gorgeous tamariki in

tee shirts and no shoes. It made me feel rather hoha. Our lost property is full of un-named fleece tops. Second hand fleece

tops are waiting for new homes and we do have some new kids can shoes available. Please let us know if you need anything to

keep your whanau warm.

A huge thank you again for Big Breakfast last week. Our amazing staff ‘shone’ as always and whanau were truly amazing

helpers. Together We Rise Above and Shine.

The Waihi East School Pool is now closed. To ensure pool is open to whanau again next season, please return all keys to the office.

KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE

This term ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ will be part of our pro-gramme in weeks 7,8 and 9. We encourage you to attend the parent information afternoon with Constable Brett Otto tomor-row, 3.15pm in the hall. Brett will be using proper terminology for body part during his in class lessons.

GREAT STARTS PARENT WORKSHOP Mrs Cannell is running a workshop for all whanau who have new entrant students, or children who are due to start school this term or next. Join Mrs Cannell in Room 6, and explore key areas for success at school. Mrs Cannell will also be able to answer any questions you may have around your child’s transition to school. Next Tuesday 26th May, 2.15-3pm in Room 6.

HEAD LICE Head lice is an on-going problem for many families and unfor-tunately we are receiving a few complaints from whanau re-garding students frequently catching head lice after they have been treated and cleaned. We have treatment and combs in the office which are available free of charge. Please work with us to combat this annoying and ongoing issue.

SOCIAL WORKER IN SCHOOLS My name is Naomi Fitzhenry and I am the new Social Worker in Schools (SWiS) for your school. I am local to the area and come from a background of Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Adult Men-tal Health. My role works in partnership with the school to assist in improving the welling being of your child/ren including the family and their needs. This may include advocacy, positive parenting and referrals to other agencies, among many things. My intention for this role is to become part of the school environment and be available and ap-proachable to anyone with concern or need. Waihi Drama Society

Waihi drama Society are putting on the children’s pantomime “Alice in Wonderland” and are looking for talented Waihi children to be in it! They need up to 20 children from 7 years old.—some are non-speaking parts. Auditions will be held on Sunday 17th May between 1.30-5pm at the theatre, Boyd Rd, Waihi. GOOGLE COMPUTER SCIENCE FIRST Google CS First is an after school club that started this week in RM 1. Details are as follows: Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Term 2 Time: 3-4.30pm, RM 1 Age: 8 yrs. + Space for 20 students. Please contact Mr McGougan if your child is interest in attending. The clubs first theme is ‘storytelling’. Students will get a chance to bring their stories to life on computers, developing characters and dialogue, building plots and using computer generated effects to add excitement and mystery to students stories.

News from the Waihi East Board of Trustees

Learning outcomes to date include:

There has been a wonderful start to an energetic Term 2.

Teacher’s classrooms look and feel inviting, warm and relevant to our topic of

Unique Me, this term.

Biking continues to sustain our skills and love of movement; this will also help our

fitness training for the Cross Country in Week 5. In addition to this, we will be

participating I n daily huff and puff from week 2, and also own class training

times for endurance.

Nik Laing will lead Jump Jam across the school from week 5.

Anzac day is a focus for Week 1, with all classes dedicating some time to honour

our Anzac soldiers with our learning. Additional activities included Rooms One and

Two attending a presentation at the RSA, a selection of children attending the

Waihi commemorations and a school display by our whare iti. A special onesie

mufti day will be held with all donations given to the Waihi RSA.

Reading Together will be on offer for families again this term, along with a

Numeracy workshop - both are run by the lovely Nik Laing.

Huge number of sporting opportunities on offer to children. A number of staff

members are coaching sports with a number of parents also coaching.

Life Choices (Bible in School) started during the first week of the term. A group

of approximately 20 children will take part in activities each Friday lunch time.

This is an opt in programme that required parental permission.

Kylie, a RTLB trained/supported Lisa Neame (teacher aide) in a reading

programme, Quick 60. After great achievement success we have purchased

resources at a significant cost ($2700). This will be hugely valuable in the junior

school. Other teacher aides will be trained in this programme during the year.

A student council is in place. Phil and his year six class are organising events and

fundraisers on behalf of the school. The student council decide how funds will be

spent. Their next organised event is the Onesie mufti day on May first for the

Waihi RSA.

Our pumpkin evening was a huge success with a large turnout of whanau at school.

This will become an annual event. Room 2, Phil, Lisa N and a few year 6 parents

served kai as a fundraiser for school.

Electives begin week 1 involving years 3/4/5 and 6 to run through to week 10 –

Mountain biking, Rippa, Eating for energy, Bike Maintenance and crafty stuff for

their 5/6s and the Cycle track, Korowai making, The green team and Baking and

munching for the yr. 3/4s.

IEPs on our low achievers are being updated and revised.

Assessment dates for this term have been set and teachers will begin testing

weeks 5/6.

Rms 1 and 2 went to the Waihi RSA where they were spoken to by former Armed

services personnel as a part of the ANZAC commemorations.

Kaihautu boys programme with RTLB is up and running for this term. East have

two boys involved.

The school Cross country is coming up in week 5 with the Waihi Cluster held a

week later, again at Morgan Park

Reporting on our yr. 4/5 and 6 students will happen later in the term due to go out

to parents in week 10.

Camp Policy

The Waihi East School Camp Policy to be presented for ratification. This Policy was

included in last week’s newsletter. Please note Police checks will be made of all parents

who stay overnight as part of a school activity.

At our next Board meeting, we will review our behaviour policy. Board members would

appreciate hearing your ideas before next month’s meeting.

Curriculum Review- Science

The focus of term one was GOLD. This was a rich theme which crossed into many

curriculum areas depending on the needs and interests of each class with a strong slant

towards science.

Feedback from students was very similar in each room with the hands on activities, visits

and guest speaker’s absolute favourites. I was amazed by the facts students were able

share without support and the joy of undertaking group and individual projects. The

children I spoke to would like to undertake more studies of this nature.

Although this is a small sampling of students, as a team we need to consider hands on

activities, more peer work, engaging topics and the use of specialist adults.

What did you learn?

Children gave various answers on the following ideas.

Mining machinery and process to get gold.

Countries involved in mining and types of mining.

About different types of stones and gems.

Our Waihi mining history (knowledge of dates and personalities was amazing)

Gold qualities, where it is found and the elementary table.

Panning, fool’s gold and veins.

Rescue chamber- purpose and safety steps at the mine.

How did you go?

All children were impressed by their learning. There was huge energy in the room as they

expressed their thoughts. Common threads:

Lots of ICT.

Ability to work in groups.

Sharing with buddies-our answers were better after talking.

Hands on stuff.

How do you know what you learnt? How do you know you were successful?

By working together, it was easier.

My presentation had all my ideas on it.

Ability to recall facts.

Teachers and visitors talked to us.

Friends.

What do the Staff and Board of Trustees need to know?

It was fun.

This will help me at College.

I enjoyed the new learning.

Enjoyed sharing information with others.

Best thing was the projects and posters.

Liked the science focus.

Loved gold panning.

Loved all the visits and parents visiting.

Appointments

Katie Sinnott has been employed in a fixed term capacity for term 2 2015. Katie

has quickly settled into Waihi East School life. Katie’s children are engaged and

interested in her programmes.

Phil has stepped into the Deputy Principal role and is showing enthusiasm,

knowledge and energy in this role. Briar and I are enjoying working alongside him.

We have started the process of appointing a senior school deputy principal.

Interviews for this position will be at the end of this term, with the successful

applicant starting in term 4 2015.

ICT- School Network Upgrade Project (SNUP) Our SNUP was completed over the holiday period and signed off on Friday 17 April. Ross was incredibly helpful to the SNUP Team as was Robbie with the placement of the server. Ultra-fast broadband will be a happening thing at Waihi East School in the very near future. The Board paid 20% of the installation ($20,000) with the Ministry of Education paying the remaining amount.

School Property The cladding of the Senior Resource Room (behind rooms two and three) is in need of replacing. This will be completed in the near future at the Board of Trustees cost. Alex with the support of whanau is removing an unused cylindrical building beside the

pool as required. Road Changes Opus aims to modify Donnelly Street in our summer holidays. Plans could include changing the position of the bus bay, additional car parking and bollards to show families where to cross the road.

Social Worker in Schools

We have a new Social Worker in Schools based in Waihi. Naomi will be available to

support our school and whanau in times of need.

Charter

As outlined by ERO, our Charter needs to be revised. Last year we discussed possible

partners to help us. We need to formalise this and move forward with the consultation

process.

ICONs

I am meeting with the Bay of Plenty organiser of ICONS, an adventure boys programme

led by male models with a Christian foundation. I hope to have a school club for our lads.

This is in the ‘ideas stage’, and we will let you know how we progress.
