Crocodile Dock - where Fearless Kids Shine God’s Light. Yes, that’s right, it
is time to plan Vacation Bible School. The dates are July 19-23 from 6:00-8:30 pm each evening, so mark your calendars now. We will also be serving a light supper again this year at 5:30 for the kids and volunteers. We need lots of volunteers to make this week a success - so, if you’d like to help, please call Alice Kern at 899-1978.
Thursday, May 7, all day and all night, the Ashland United Methodist Church will be open and accessible for people to pray for our nation. All denominations are welcome and we all will agree that our nation certainly needs our prayers. This is the 58th year our country has observed the National Day of Prayer and it is offered in all 50 states. The theme this year is PRAYER: AMERICA’S HOPE! Prayer may be the only hope our country has, so we urge you to come to the United Methodist Church at any time convenient to you and pray for our country. We should also pray for our state and our local communities, our own churches and our own families. We need to learn how to rely on God instead of ourselves. We know the power of prayer! Let’s do our part in guiding our nation to its future.

All students at A-C Central Jr. High participated in the Illinois Math League contest. There were 173 total schools participating in Illinois. They competed against other participating schools in the following counties of their Region: Cass, Champaign, Effing-ham, Fayette, Hancock, Lawrence, Macon, Sangamon and Ver-million. The 6th Grade class finished 4th in their region behind Glenwood (Chatham), Mt. Zion (Mt. Zion), and Parkview (Lawrenceville).

During WWII, a group was organized who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace. This had an amazing effect. There is now a group organizing the same thing here in America. United States needs prayer now more than ever!!! If you would like to participate: each evening at 8:00 PM Central time, stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, for peace in the world, that the Bible will remain the basis for the laws governing our land and that Christianity will grow in the U.S. Most people know the power of prayer. BITS-N-PIECES SUMMER DAYS IN JUNE!!! The Ashland Summer Days will be earlier this year - June 26-28. The Community Club is busy securing entertainment, setting the schedule, etc. Friday will open with the Little Miss and Mister Contest, Baby Contest, and the First Citizen Award, as well as entertainment on the stage. The parade, truck pull, and kids games will be part of the Saturday fare. A Coors beer tent will be running on both Friday and Saturday nights, with Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters on the stage for Saturday evening. If you have something you would like to see as a part of the celebration, please let one of the Committee know or come to the next meeting. The next meeting is Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 pm at Village Hall. The Village of Ashland will be taking bids for a 1975 GMC tandem axle truck chassis. The Truck can be seen upon request. A-C Central 5th Graders Vote for Rebecca Caudill Book Award
During the ’08-’09 school year, the 5th grade classes at A-C Central have been participating in the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book award program. Illinois is one of
forty-nine states offering a book award program that is determined by student vote. This award is presented to the author whose book receives the most votes from young readers in Illinois that participate in the program. The mission is to encourage students in grades 4-8 to read for personal satisfaction, to develop a statewide awareness of outstanding literature, to promote a desire of literacy and to encourage cooperation among library agencies.
Mrs. Kesselring, and Mrs. Petefish read from the list of nominated books to the students or assigned selections for the students to read to promote this program. The voting took place at the end of February with students selecting The Lightening Thief by Rick Riodran as the overall winner. Recently the tabulation of all voters also selected the same title as the winner of the Rebecca Caudill 2009 award. The winning book was selected from a twenty-title list.
This program was a great experience for students and teachers this year. Mrs. Hatcher, the school librarian, is making plans to include this program in the 2009-2010 school year and expanding it to the sixth grade classes.
Pleasant Plains 4th of July Chicken Dinner & Fireworks Display
The Pleasant Plains Community Club is sponsoring a 4th of July cele-
bration at the Pl Pl Firehouse on Buckeye Road. Serving time will be 5
pm until 8pm.
The menu will consist of crackling good grilled chicken, snapping won-
derful baked beans. popping potato salad, and bread & butter for
$7.00 per person.
Hot Dots and chips = $3.00. Drinks and desserts will also be provided.
There will be a bake sale and activities for the children—Crazy Wagon,
music, etc. Fireworks at dusk on the Pl Pl High School track field.
Bring your lawn chair, find a great spot to watch the fireworks, pur-
chase chicken and have a picnic on the school grounds or eat at the firehouse.
Carry-outs will be available. We will have enough chicken to feed an
army - we won’t run out.

Feb 21, 2009 IL Ducks Unlimited State Convention at the Par-A-Dice Hotel & Casino in E. Peoria, IL
Kenny Walters of Ashland was recently recognized by Ducks Unlimited
for his years of dedication and service as a volunteer, by becoming the 2nd person in IL DU history to receive ―The Lifetime Achievement
Award‖. Mr. Walters has been a volunteer with DU for just over 30 years. He has represented IL DU as a National Delegate and Trustee
for 6 times. This means he has represented Illinois and the local membership of DU with his vote at business meetings at 6 National Conventions. Kenny continues to work on State Convention Commit-tee and held a position on the IL DU State Council for over 20 years.
Kenny began volunteering for the Ducks in 1978 in Morgan County. He and a group of other volunteers soon saw that there were other opportunities for DU in neighboring Cass County in 1980. Kenny is a
charter member of two chapters. The previously mentioned Cass County, and the more recent chapter named Tri-Coiunty (23 yrs.),
with events held today in New Berlin at the Sangamon County Fair-grounds.
When you think about 30 years of volunteering, you might want to know what all the time away from home volunteering for the ducks might involve. It could be said that Kenny has had a hand in helping
raise over a $1 Million for DU or 4,000 acres of wetland habitat. Because of Kenny and others, Ducks Unlim-ited has been able to conserve 12.6 Million acres for waterfowl and other wildlife in North America. Currently, DU has a land and conservation program in Illinois, with annual expenditures in excel of $1 million. These are
great wild places for wildlife and the people of Illinois to enjoy forever.

To Ashland Residents: It’s been over one month since Alexander Lumber
closed its doors. August 2009 would have been 110 years since Alexan-der Lumber Co. opened
for business in Ashland. Alexander Lumber decided to close the Ashland location and combine its busi-ness with its Rushville location. This has been a past business practice of the company to do in slower economic times. The employees would like
to thank everyone who supported us in the past.

Former A– C Central Basketball players win once again and helped to bring in quite an
exuberant crowd to the ―Glory Days Classic‖ Alumni Basketball Tournament that was
held at Porta High School Gymnasiums on February 7th and 8th 2009. Sixteen teams
and 187 players signed up to represent 6 decades of Central Illinois basketball. Teams
were from A-C Central, Bluffs, Buffalo Tri-C ity, Carrolton, Delavan, Greenview, Ha-
vana, Illiopolis, Lewiston, Midwest Central, New Berlin, North Greene, Pittsfield, Porta,
Riverton, and Winchester. Around 40 former All-State or IBCA All-Stars came together
with college athletes from all levels to compete once again and have their ―Glory Days‖
of memories and fun. Several game rules were altered: Two 20 minute halves, one
time out per half, five minute half time, and ties would be sudden death with first point
win. Once again loyal fans cheered as the A-C Central Team won their first game
against Winchester (79 to 49). Several stand-outs from Winchester were: Mark Cox,
Tony Cox 1985, Ken Day 1986, Eric Little 1993 and Leo Anslyn 1983. The bleacher sec-
tion for the A-C Team went wild for the second time that day as the men played to de-
feat Illiopolis (55 to 35). Stand-outs from Illiopolis were: Todd Blakeman 1987, Eric
Weaver 1991, Jamie Honea 2008. On Sunday evening February 8, the Championship
Game was played with a full house as the A-C Central Team played Pittsfield for the ti-
tle. Tension was in the air as the fans eating popcorn, standing in the walk-ways, and
remembering games when A-C played against Pittsfield during the 1990’s. This was a
closer match during the first half, but in the second half the A-C Central team added
another championship win to their record by defeating Pittsfield (67 to 54). Pittsfield
stand-outs were: Richie Alen 1979, Joe Petty 1980, Jonas Petty 1997, Dave Marable
1991, Dan Riley 2000. Stand-outs from the Championship A-C Central team were:
Colin and Chris Arthalony 1994, Wade Danner 1995, Ryan Smith 1995, Travis Cave
1995, Travis Wallbaum 1996, Matt and Drew Petefish 1998, Brian Moffitt 1999, and
Brock Thompson 2008. Watch for the ―Glory Days Classic‖ as the plans old letterman’s
jacket and come watch or play as you are in the making for 2010. Shake out yourake a
step back in time. That’s what J.D. Proehl did. He graduated in the year 1960 from
Forman High and came back to play with his son Jason 1996, as they made up the ros-
ter for Midwest Central.

I’m sure most of you know that the city of Ash-land pays to dump the recycle bin. It is evident that all who use it are concerned with the envi-
ronment and want to do their part. You can make a bigger difference by flattening boxes and not putting plastics and cans in the bin in a bag. Open
the bag, dump the things in, and then put the bag in a wad in the corner. Many more people will be able to put recyclables in, and much less will end up in the landfills. Thanks for your help.
