Serving in Guatemala
Zion members Michael Burgdorf and
Blair Solberg will be traveling to
Guatemala for 10 days this June with
Side-by-Side Ministries. Side-by-Side
Ministries is a charitable organization
that is run by Terry Munoz, a Buffalo
local.
Michael and Blair will be traveling with a
group of other Buffalo youth. They will be
staying in an orphanage with 400
abandoned Guatemalan youth. The
orphanage, located near Antigua Bay,
takes in abandoned youth and gives them
a loving home and educates them from
infancy years until the end of high school.
While there, Michael and Blair will assist
in digging out an area that the orphanage
can use for doing laundry. Also, they will
be interacting with all of the children
throughout the week to spread God’s love.
They feel very blessed to have been given
this fantastic opportunity. If anyone wants
to help out, donations will be accepted.
Tax deductible donations are payable to
Side-by-Side Ministries, a non-profit
organization. Contact Michael or Blair
for more information. 100% of these
donations will go to scholarships that will
be given to the oldest of the orphans
whom are planning to attend college but
lack the funds.
On behalf of the whole group, they request
your prayers for safety and that they can
have a positive impact on an area that
deserves our love.
Blood Drive at Zion
Every minute of every day, someone
needs blood. That blood can only
come from a volunteer donor, a
person like you who makes the
choice to donate. There is no
substitute for your
donation.
The Red Cross Blood
Mobile will be at Zion
on Thursday, May 17,
from 1:30-6:30pm.
Please contact Beverly
Smith at 763.675.3182
or 763.741.7493 to help
or donate. Online donor
registration can be found

Mak Do Wit Wat Hav
By Rick Dehmer
Say the above 3 times as fast as you can.
Fifteen Zion members entered the country of Jamaica with 30 large suitcases, 15 carry-ons, and a few personal hand bags. We were not traveling light due to the great donations from our Zion family and friends. We were on a mission.
Our mission group came with different personalities, expectations, and questions: What can we do? Do we have the right skills? Can we make a difference? How do we make an impression? Energy, supplies and enthusiasm were not in short supply.
With our first day out at the service sites, reality hit. We are in the minority. We are on Jamaican time, with Jamaican expectations and Jamaican ways. “We make do with what we have” (mak do wit wat hav). A new idea? No. I think I remember a simpler time when I made do with what God provides.
How novel … to travel to help a people and have them remind us of a simpler way, a quieter time, and provide us with a place to reflect on our own spirituality. We engaged in service and found a chance to see so clearly how God has blessed us with an opportunity to open our eyes and see how people are happy in life by “making do with what we have.” Try it sometime; I think you may be pleasantly surprised at how much you’ll like it.
Reflecting on mission trips in general I have found that we travel with the intent to affect
others and in turn are affected ourselves. I see bonding of
the travelers as a binding together in a stronger foundation for our church family.
Global mission Sunday is May 6. Take a moment to see what our Zion family is doing and take pride in our reaching out.
Living God’s Call
Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them 2
One of the locals that many Mission Jamaica teams encounter is ‘The Basket Man’, who has sent three children to college by making and selling baskets.
Our Mission... Zion seeks to
Share Christ’s Word,
Strengthen our Faith, and
Serve those in need.
Our Vision… Helping people experience the joy
of life in Christ by:
1. Celebrating on Sundays:
Creating Sunday morning experiences that invite, welcome,
engage and inspire people to live for Christ.
2. Living God’s Call:
Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them to
trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world.
3. Connecting with Care:
Creating a community where people are connected in relationships and
supported in need.
Set Free to Serve
Whew! At this moment, I’m taking a deep breath, reflecting on a great Lenten and Easter season, celebrating my one year anniversary at Zion, and getting excited about where God continues to lead us as a community. Many of our committees are doing the same thing. We ask that question, “What has God brought us together to do?” Our guiding statement comes out of the visioning process we finished in 2011. We come together as a community with the goal of “helping people experience the joy of life in Christ.”
In each of Zion’s ministry areas, from congregational care to global missions, we are working under that guiding statement of helping people experience the joy of life in Christ. It shapes what we do, it leads us in our serving, it forms our witness. We are evaluating what we do and why we do it as it leads us to that end of experiencing the joy of life in Christ.
For example, when the social ministry committee met to talk about our focus for the next year, we reflected on how we support the vision statement while continuing to meet needs in the community and reach out as a church. It was discovered that for every opportunity to meet a need in the community, we needed the people of this church to step up with time and resources. What if we expanded our focus to include not just those getting their physical need of food, clothing, etc. met? What if we focused on helping the people of God get their spiritual and emotional needs met through using their God-given gifts in service? This led us to a two-pillared approach of focusing on those serving and those served. We have a great calendar of events for helping those in need and we’ll now spend time on building up the serving corps of the church, getting people plugged into events and opportunities that connect them with each other and the greater community.
When this is happening consistently, we have said that our success will be defined in this way; by “bringing people together to serve the community with compassion.” For the social ministry committee, this is what we call defining the win. Again, it consists of two parts, (1) serving and (2) meeting the needs of our community. So we will build up servants, we will equip them, we will give them opportunities, and we will help them uncover their God-given gifts and passions. After all, God desires that of his church.
The reason I lay this out with some detail is because God is at work on so many levels at Zion. He is constantly leading us to make the most of our greatest gift, the people of this congregation who have been set free to serve by the great love and sacrifice of Jesus.
Just one example, I know, but a great way to see how things continue to unfold and develop. We will continue to work to sharpen focus, make the most of what God has given us, and lead in the greater Buffalo area with word and witness. Thank you so much for being a partner in this journey.
to trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world. 3
Spokes and Folks
Zion is planning a Cycling Saturday for June 2 from 4-7pm, the Saturday night before the Buffalo Triathlon. Plans are underway for a pasta supper provided by Zion Youth and a “cycle in” worship for spokes and folks of all ages at 7pm. The Triathlon committee is also planning to hold packet pickup for athletes at Zion during this time. Watch for details about special guests that will stop in for the pasta supper and worship. There will be biking fun for young bike riders in a car-free area in the north parking lot.
If you plan to ride in the Sunday morning triathlon, volunteer at Sturges Park on Sunday, prefer to avoid the traffic congestion on triathlon Sunday, or just want a great chance to bike to Zion, mark this opportunity on your calendars.
If you’d like to volunteer at the Saturday events at Zion, call the church office or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Augustana Heritage Gathering VIII
"A Living Legacy"
Knowing our family roots is important for our self-identity. Their genes and traditions are big factors in who we are as individuals today.
The same is true for a congregation — knowing the story of the people who founded the congregation can be a source for generating identity and purpose within the present community.
Zion is one of 259 congregations in Minnesota with roots in the Augustana Synod — the Swedish Lutheran denomination that thrived from 1860-1962. Today, most of these congregations are part of the ELCA, though a few are affiliated with other Lutheran associations.
The Augustana Heritage Association’s Gathering will be held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter, Minnesota, from June 21-24, 2012.
Worship is a key element of the Gathering, making use of liturgies and hymns from the old Augustana hymnal. Bishop Antje Jackelén from Lund, Sweden will preach at the festival worship service on Saturday morning. Preachers at the closing worship on Sunday morning will be Pastor Barbara Lundblad and Bishop Herbert Chilstrom.
The Gathering schedule includes five plenary sessions and three opportunities to attend your choice of 22 interest group presentations.
There are also at least two opportunities to attend individual parts of the Gathering:
Garrison Keillor on June 21
Garrison Keillor will speak at the opening session on Thursday, June 21, at 7:30pm in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus campus. This event will also be open to the public with tickets priced at $25.
Commuter Day on June 23
A special "Commuter Day" option is available on Saturday, June 23. The commuter experience begins with 11am worship in Christ Chapel using the old Augustana liturgy, followed by a buffet lunch, and then a 2pm presentation on "Augustana in American Church History" by Dr. James Bratt, professor of church history at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Cost for the Commuter Day option is $15 per person.
More information about the Gathering can be found at https://gustavus.edu/servantleadership/aha/.

Zion’s Courtyard
Did you know that Zion’s grounds include a courtyard? Access is down the west hallway, across from the Choir rooms. The doors will be open, and everyone is welcome to use this space for lunch, coffee, or meditation. Pastor Ted would love to lunch with you some day. In addition, the outside church grounds are a great place to take a walk, look over the prairie, and look for God’s creatures meandering in the meadow.
The Paris Wife
The Zion Book Club Selection for May is The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. The group will meet on Monday, May 14, at 7pm in the Zion Library.
Set during a remarkable time, the same period as Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast and The Sun Also Rises, Paula McLain's The Paris Wife brilliantly captures the voice and heart of Hadley Hemingway as she struggles with her roles as a woman—wife, lover, muse, friend, and mother—and tries to find her place in the intoxicating and tumultuous world of Paris in the twenties.

On Tuesday, May 15, the annual Community Book Read will be held at Buffalo High School. The selection this year is Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran’s last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.

Other upcoming selections include:
June 11 : Ice Princess by Camilla Lackburg
July 9: Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff
August 13: Anishinaabe Syndicated: A View from the Rez by Jim Northrup
This is a low pressure book club. Simply come for discussion with no preparation; participants are not obligated to agree on (or even finish) the books. Come when you have interest and time, so that book club will enrich your life and not become another stress or obligation.

To everything there is a season...
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
Ecclesiastes 3:4
Women, mark your calendars for a great get-together on Saturday, May 5, here at Zion. Bring family and friends. The event starts at 9:30am with a catered brunch from Catie’s Café in Trinity Hall, followed by a program filled with thoughts about our daily dance through our Christian life. This morning of fun and relaxation for all ages has become a popular annual tradition at Zion.
Marge Lundeen, formerly of Buffalo, will be this year’s guest speaker. Marge was puzzled by Ecclesiastes 3:4 with its statement that dancing is the opposite of mourning. Then she noticed that many hymns make reference to dancing. What’s a woman who lacks coordination, stamina, and natural rhythm to do? Marge’s stories about her attempts to dance will make you laugh, and she will challenge you to respond to the assurance that in God’s plan there is a time for everything.
Pastor Sara Vanderpan will emcee the morning. Women will be treated to special music provided by Lisa Ebnet and the Rainbow Singers, and entertainment will also include a performance by the Starlights, a local group of young dancers. A craft time will be available for elementary aged girls, and nursery is available for the little ones up to age 5.
RSVP by April 30 online, by calling the Zion office, or at the information desk on Sunday mornings.
Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 12 and under; pay at the door.

There’s a delicious meal waiting for you
from 5-6:15pm in the Fellowship Hall
for a suggested donation of $3 per

Garden Improvements
Share your springtime gardening
interest by adopting one of 25 garden
plots along the south side of Zion’s
main parking lot.
Some of the 10’ wide and 10-14’ deep
plots have been adopted, and others are
still waiting for someone to care for
them this year. Gardens are often
maintained in memory of a loved one,
or just as a place to share your
gardening interest and help spread color
and joy around Zion.
In March, one of the two rows of
evergreen trees was removed to increase
sunshine and good air circulation. This
spring an irrigation system will also be
added to the area. Both these projects
were funded through a gift to Zion’s
Memorial Fund.
To get involved with God’s Gardeners,
contact Carol Elliott Olson at
763.682.6930 or Diane Huston at
763.682.1040, or the church office.
Sweater Collection
As you look through your winter clothes
and decide what you will still wear next
year, consider if you have sweaters that
could be donated to Harvest of Hands.
Sweaters in good shape can have a new
life after they are collected and cleaned
ready to be sold at the fall Harvest of
Hands event.
Drop your sweaters off in the donation
bin at Zion by Sunday, May 27.

Finance & Stewardship
What will you do with your $1,000,000?
According to 2009 data, the average household in Buffalo earns $59,369.00 per year. Based on that figure, the average household will have earned a million dollars in 16.8 years. That just amazes me. This is not a get rich quick scheme. Not winning the lottery. You’ll have earned a million! For you the yearly income may be lower or higher. If it is lower, it will be longer than 17 years, but higher salaries will reach $1,000,000 sooner.
So the question is… What will you do with your $1,000,000? It’s a lot of money. Children shouldn’t be allowed near that much money. It takes an adult, preferably two adults, to handle that much money. I found two Bible verses that offer advice regarding your million dollars.
Plan
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” Luke 14:27-29. You don’t need a tower. You need to fund your kids’ college education. You need retirement income. You need a plan. Without a plan the bank and the credit card companies will gladly take the entire $1,000,000 and you won’t see it coming. For a building you need blueprints, the plan for money is a budget. I’ve worked for a lot longer than 17 years, I couldn’t tell you where the money went. Lucky for me I’ve got a diligent wife who has made that plan, that budget. She made that plan to save, invest and give. It’s like that old story of the turtle and the hare. Steadily move closer and closer to your goal. No matter how many times you read that old story, the rabbit never wins.
Give
Giving is an important part of that plan too. Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. Proverbs 16: 2-4. You need balance. Being a spendthrift will get you into financial trouble. On the opposite extreme, hoarding everything won’t allow God’s blessings into your life. If your hand is too open, the money will fly away. If you close your hand into a fist, no money can get in.
Good $ense Begins May 6
Do you…Dream of someday being debt-free? Use the resources you have according to God’s principles? Have a plan for getting out of debt and staying out? The Good $ense Budget Course, developed by Willow Creek Church, can help you do all these things and more.
Tom Moline will host this 6-week course on Sundays, beginning May 6, at noon. A light lunch will be available. Cost is $24 per person.
Marriage and Money
How candid are you with your spouse
about finances? A recent poll by the
National Foundation for Credit
Counseling (NFCC) found that almost 1 in
4 respondents (24%) would not tell their
husband or wife about a financial
problem, fearing it would worry the
spouse, damage their relationship or be an
unwelcome surprise.
"Even if well-intentioned, withholding
financial information from a spouse is not
a sign of a healthy relationship, either
emotional or financial," says Gail
Cunningham, spokesperson for the NFCC.
The organization suggests spouses set
aside a time to discuss such issues in a
calm, honest, open-minded way.

Retire at 65? Nope!
As appealing as retirement can look, older
Americans who continue to work for pay,
either full time or part time, after age 65
report better emotional health than those
who don't. Researchers aren't sure why. It
could be the extra money, the chance to
socialize and interact with coworkers, the
feeling of being needed or some other
factor. "While continuing to work may be
a financial necessity for many, it appears
the benefits of being employed after age
65 go beyond material advantages,"
researchers say.

We Did It – 100,008 Meals!
By Joy Arens and Linda Nerothin
April 15, 2012 … what an amazing day it was at Zion!
It all started in April of 2011 when Zion packaged 23,000 meals in partnership with Outreach International of Union, Iowa. That was a great day, but we thought we could do even better! Zion’s Harvest of Hands committee designated the majority of funds raised at the November 2011 Festival for a large packaging event. Additional money was raised through a Hog Roast in September and a Valentine sale. Zion’s Sunday School students raised over $2,500 during Lent through Change for Children.
At a Truckload of Life meeting, Pastor Ted started out private donations with a $100 donation. Dave Nerothin called lots of others and challenged them to do the same. An anonymous match of $2,500 was also received, and many donations were received at the event in a big wooden truck bank made by Lyle Jans.
On Saturday, Doug and Dave Schmidt met the semi with their forklift and brought all the food and packaging equipment into Trinity Hall. With the help of Bob from Outreach and many volunteers, the set-up took less than two hours.
Sunday was such an exciting day! The Sunday School packed at the 8:30 and 10:30 shifts. It was fun to see how excited the children were to help. Over 500 volunteers of all ages from Zion, other churches, Buffalo and surrounding communities filled another four shifts. Myron and Pastor Ted led a blessing of the packed boxes after each shift. Some people enjoyed packing so much that they wanted to keep going, and packing bags had to be rationed to save some work for the last shift! As tables finished up the final shift, the packers helped to break down the tables and clean up, allowing everything to be packed up by 5pm.
The total for the day was 100,008 meals packed at a cost of $25,002.
This load will go to Tanzania. In addition, 180 pounds of food were collected and delivered to the Buffalo Food Shelf.
The Harvest of Hands committee and the Zion staff wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers who worked so hard and contributed time, money and food to make this event such a success. Volunteers learned that 50 children died of starvation in the time it took to watch the 3-1/2 minute training video. The Harvest of Hands committee feels called to share God’s love through feeding the hungry. We couldn't have sent these meals without your help! May God bless you all as you have blessed others! Thank you!
See pages 16-17 and Zion’s Facebook page for more photos from this event.

30 Hour Famine Recap
On Friday, March 23, over 120 8th-12th grade students from the Buffalo area came together at St. John’s Lutheran to fight hunger while learning the truth about hunger, poverty, and injustice — and how to overcome it all with love.
Students had the opportunity to serve many different organizations during the Famine, including Love INC - Heartland, Love INC - Big Woods, Parkview Care Center, Park Lane & Woodmere Apartments, MRD Inc, Kids Against Hunger, Read to Feed the Mind and others.
Students were also able to take part in Tribal Games, worship, devotions, journaling and fellowship. At midnight, to celebrate their accomplishments, students broke their fast with a pancake breakfast.
This was a great experience had by all! See you in 2013!
AGAPE* is Coming!
AGAPE* (aka Dave Sherer) is coming to Zion on Wednesday, May 16, to lead an inspiring night of worship during Confirmation.
AGAPE* has inspired youth from Brooklyn to Bosnia with his relational ministry "Hip Hop Outreach." Combining rapping, dancing, and storytelling, AGAPE* connects with his listeners in a way that they really "get it." His energy is contagious, and his stories of faith transcend differences. Even those who do not normally enjoy hip-hop find themselves dancing to his music and captivated by his unique presentation of the Gospel. AGAPE* brings an authentic approach into songs and stories that can be understood by every listener. His passion is to bring together people of all backgrounds and let them know about God's love for the whole world.
You will not want to miss out on this amazing night of music, testimonies, dance, prayer, worship and fellowship! All are welcome! CDs and t-shirts will be available for purchase.

Welcome to our new Health Ministries Intern- Jinaa Lane
The Health Ministry Team has hired a new intern, Jinaa Lane, to work with Redeemer Lutheran to put into action the results of the 2011 Health Survey, in which many of you took part.
My name is Jinaa Lane, and I am a student at St. Catherine University majoring in Public Health, Health Science, with a focus in Nutritional Science. My decision to major in Public Health is a result of my concern for the holistic well-being of many of the communities in America struggling with insufficient knowledge of healthy eating and being affected by sedentary lifestyles, which in turn result in obesity and Type 2 diabetes. I am concerned our children are paying the price for the choices we are making through childhood obesity. Type 2 diabetes among our children is increasing every year. I would like to be a resource for many American neighborhoods as a health and nutrition educator promoting healthy living and disease prevention. I am currently at NorthPoint Clinic as a Health Educator working with the Registered Dietician on the Diabetes Self Management Class, Diabetes Support Group, and the We Can Program, which promotes healthy living to families on the North Side of Minneapolis. I am a student Money Management Mentor with the Money Management Program at St. Catherine University: I help educate the St. Kate's community on financial fitness by conducting workshops and presentations and through one-on-one counseling for students of St.Kates and high school and elementary students. As the Harrison community strives to be an example in living holistic healthy lives, I will be honored to be a part of the process. I look forward to working with this wonderful community as we become proactive in our efforts to develop strong minds, bodies, and souls.
Tweet Tweet
There are many ways to keep in touch with what is happening at Zion. Besides this newsletter and the weekly announcement inserts in the bulletin, social media tools help many members stay connected.
One of the social media options that Zion has been using for a few years now is Twitter. When the account was first set up, few people around Buffalo used Twitter, and Zion’s use was limited. Recently, the number of local users has been increasing, and staff are working to make Zion’s Twitter feed more regular,
relevant, and interactive.
When you check out Zion’s Twitter profile at Twitter.com/ZionBuffalo, you will find a mixture of announcements, behind the scenes news, and occasional ‘retweets’ from other local or Lutheran organizations. Click the ‘Follow’ button … and don’t be surprised if ZionBuffalo follows you back :)
You can also find Zion’s most recent update on most pages of ZionBuffalo.org, right above the ‘Featured Links’ in the right sidebar.

Easter Basket Mission
The collection, assembly and distribution
of the Easter Food Gift Baskets by
members of Zion to clients of the Buffalo
Food Shelf continues to grow in the
number of people served in our
community. Under the leadership of the
Social Ministry Committee many groups
and individuals got involved to make this
event meaningful and successful.
Members of Zion donated enough
product and/or money to fill 225
baskets which fed about 800
individuals in the Buffalo area.
The grapple Sunday School kids
packed up about 650 bags of bulk
jelly beans
Confirmation groups collected
products and then came in with their
leaders and sorted and counted the
products.
A group gathered and filled the bags
and added a Easter greeting card
from Zion
Once our guests started to arrive,
volunteers cheerfully greeted and
welcomed them into our church—our
home!
A senior high student preformed the
duties of Easter Bunny to thrill the
kids!
Contributions from Love INC—Big
Woods and Buddy’s Kitchens enabled
us to feed the families and individuals
a bowl of soup and a sandwich.
After eating, clients came to Trinity
Hall and received their Basket where
our volunteers wished them a Happy
Easter and helped carry it out to their
cars if necessary.
The following morning, more
volunteers came in to help clean up
and take excess items to the Food
Shelf!
This is a great example of the people of
Zion, from the kids, to adults, to seniors
all participating to serve those in need in
our local community with passion!
Together we are helping people experience
the Joy of Life in Christ!
Congratulations
Graduates
Congratulations to members and friends of the congregation who are graduating from high school this year.
The Class of 2012 will be recognized during the10:30am worship service on Sunday, May 20. Baccalaureate will be at St John’s
Lutheran Church on Wednesday, May 30. More information about both these services can be found on page12.
