Jiminez and family, from the congregation in Mexico City
for which we continue to pray. We have word from Bob
Butcher that Bernice, her mother and grandfather, and
her brother Hugo will be in Port Clinton May 13-15, and
they would very much like to connect with old friends
from Firelands.
If you would like to see them, or host them for a meal or
an outing, please contact Bob at 419-732-2600 or

Stein Hospice LifeCourse at Firelands Church
The LifeCourse is a series of classes that explore the
feelings and philosophies of the death and dying process.
This three-week, two-day-a-week course will be held at
Firelands the first three Mondays and Wednesdays in
May (6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22) from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. This
course is designed to prepare people to be hospice
volunteers—to spend time with patients making their
final life journey—but is also open to those who simply
want to learn more about dealing with death and dying.
For more information or to register, contact The
Volunteer Department at 1-800-625-5269 or
Watch Us Blossom A Master Gardener recently visited
Firelands and was full of amazement
and praise for all the gardens we have.
She remarked, “I’ve never seen a small
church with this many gardens. This
church must be truly loved by its
people.” She is right.
Last year, with the financial
backing, volunteer labor and
enthusiastic support of the
congregation, the landscape committee worked
to transform our grounds into something special.
Spring is finally here and you will begin to see the
results of the many flowering shrubs which
were planted around the church. We hope
you are pleased.
We have plans to continue this year and we are anxious
to get started. (One of the fruits of The Holy Spirit is
patience, right? We have been given a double dose of
patience while waiting for good weather to arrive!) Most
of our efforts so far have been devoted to trying to do
something about the water drainage issues in the back.
With all the rain, it has almost returned into its Black
Swamp origins. A bog garden might be in our future!
We are gratified with the response to the special offering
to help us maintain our landscape and purchase much
needed plants for the church front garden beds. For all
our returning snowbirds, the green LOL envelopes (Love
our Landscape) are still available if you wish to donate.
Many thanks for all your support.

Walloping Walleye! Walleye Wishes for the Cure. This will be our project to
raise money for the American Cancer Society. (The
flamingoes are on hiatus this year!)
We have ten wonderful wooden walleye to paint
(magnificently crafted by Bill Umlauf). Call Kay McIntosh
if you want to help paint these fund raising fish! Then we
can start to surprise our friends with a Walleye Drop into
their front yards.
Women’s Retreat! Feeding Our Hungers
Fri., 6/21 – Sat., 6/22 Our Lady of the Pines
It’s a truism that we often eat in an attempt to satisfy
other hungers in our lives—for excitement, for meaning,
for relationship, for freedom from anxiety, for love, for
God. At this retreat we will explore the hungers in our
lives ... and ways to fulfill them other than with
chocolate! Pastor Jeanne, who has led well more than a
dozen women’s retreats, will lead the program.
We’ll begin checking in at Our Lady of the Pines around
5:00 Friday afternoon, have dinner together, and begin
our program that evening. Saturday will include more
program, worship, “free” time, breakfast and lunch. We’ll
end around 4:00 that afternoon.
The cost of the retreat is $70; a $30 deposit is due by
the beginning of June. Checks (payable to Firelands
Church) can be given to Connie Brand or sent to the
church office. This amount covers breakfast and lunch on
Saturday and an overnight stay in a private room with
shared bathroom. (Private toilet facilities are available
for an additional $5.00.)
If you have questions or would like to help with the
retreat, contact Connie (419-351-0533 or

Preschool Tidbits Lectionary Texts for May
The month of April was filled with business: April Fools Day, April
Showers, Book Fair, six Birthdays, Spring Animals, Picture Day, The
Library Lady, Bugs, Earth Day, Plants, and Flowers ... all of which were
worked into math, social studies, science, and language arts areas.
We have more children than ever and some days wonder where they are
all coming from!
We are currently getting ready for the Mother's Tea and the end of year
program and graduation.
Our students did extremely well on the Kindergarten screening. The
scores averaged in the lower to upper 90th percentile—one having a score
of 99%. They did us proud!

Church Growth News Welcome back to our Snowbirds! And Welcome to
Guests and Visitors!
The Growth Committee is focusing on making sure we
are making it easier for people to find us and get to
know us better. We don’t have to focus on being
welcoming because we really are excited to meet new
people. We greet newcomers because we are glad they
are here and we are interested in them as fellow
worshipers.
All are welcome. All are loved. All are God’s children.
Welcome to Firelands Presbyterian Church.

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving:
What’s Up with That?
I get letters and emails, periodically, from folks in the
PC(USA)’s Office of Theology, Worship and Education
suggesting that congregations move to including
communion in their worship more frequently. Even
(gasp) once a week!
When I get those, I think, Fine, check that one off the
list. I’m not sure exactly when Firelands first
started celebrating the Lord’s Supper
every week, but I do know that when I
first came here and asked a number
of people what the congregation’s
“sacred cows” were—what
simply could not be changed—
the answer I got almost every
time was “weekly
communion.”
It’s part of the rhythm of this
congregation, this weekly
gathering around the Table,
this being fed each week.
And I’m glad for it. It feeds
me, as well, and I think it
brings us together in ways
that we don’t really begin to
understand.
I know, though, that some
people have wondered about
that huge long prayer that
precedes the actual breaking
of the bread and sharing of the cup: The
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving. (I know that before
I went to seminary, I had no idea there was any
structure to this prayer: I just thought the minister
rambled on for an awfully long time!)
The Book of Common Worship (Louisville, KY:
Westminster/John Knox, 1993) notes that thankful
praise has been central to the sacrament of the Lord’s
Supper from the earliest centuries of the church—that
“thanksgiving is so important to this sacrament that it
has been given the name of Eucharist (from the ...
Greek word eucharistia, meaning thanksgiving).
The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving has three parts,
usually directing us to be thankful for the three persons
of the Trinity.
In the first part “we praise God for all God’s mighty acts
in the past, present, and future. God is praised for
creating all things, the providence of God, establishing
the covenant, giving the law, the witness of the
prophets, God’s boundless love and mercy in spite of
human failure, the ultimate gift of Christ, and
[sometimes] the immediate occasion or festival”
(BCW 42).
This is followed by the Sanctus, which we
sometimes sing and sometimes say
together. This is when we join with “choirs
of angels and the faithful of every time
and place,” as we often hear, to adore the
triune God: Holy, holy, holy Lord.
In the second part of the prayer, we
recall and give thanks for Christ’s
work of redemption: his birth, life,
and ministry, his death and
resurrection, the promise of his
coming again, and the gift of the
Sacrament. This is followed
by a recited or sung
acclamation of faith,
sometimes called the Memorial
Acclamation, “in which we joyfully
acclaim Christ who died, is risen, and
will come again” (BCW 43).
The third part of the prayer has us calling on the Holy
Spirit to draw us “into the presence of the risen Christ,
and to make the breaking of the bread and sharing of
the cup a communion in the body and blood of Christ,
that [we] may be nourished with Christ’s body, made
one with the risen Christ, united with all the faithful in
heaven and earth, kept faithful as Christ’s body,
representing Christ in ministry in the world, in
anticipation of the fulfillment of the kingdom Christ
proclaimed” (BCW 43).
At the end of the prayer, we praise the triune God, often
with the words “God in Community, Holy in One.”

Stated Session Meeting Highlights for April 9, 2013 Pastor Jeanne Gay opened the meeting with devotions
and distribution of prayer cards.
Treasurer’s Report (Bill Umlauf) and Financial
Stewardship (Alison Falls): Bill noted that the
General Fund, although $2461.under budget for 2013
due to lower revenues, is not a great concern
considering how early in the year it is. Pre-school is
showing a profit. Our account for WPCR is strong
enough to provide radio coverage through this May.
Our current bank, PNC, is closing, so our banking will be
moved to National Bank of Ohio (NBOH). Checking
account signers approved will be Bill Umlauf, John
Madison, Alison Falls, and Dave Moore. Grants of
$5500.for our Food Pantry received during March and
April bring the account total to $7919. Dave Wahlers
and Harold Brown will perform the 2012 FPC Operational
Audit.
Old Business: “Session Calling,” our telephone
outreach to each member, is beginning and should be
completed by the end of April.
New Business: Session will develop a “grant” program
whereby the various committees of Firelands Church
may request funds needed for projects. The committee,
chaired by Alison will include Dave Moore, Pastor Jeanne
and Karen Coffin. A “Reserves Adequacy Assessment”
will be performed so Session knows exactly how much
cash we can afford to make available to committees and
how much must be kept in reserve for emergency
repairs. John Madison agreed to chair the nominating
committee to prepare for the retire- ment of Elders and
Deacons this coming fall.
Christian Growth (Karen Coffin): Outreach projects
on Internet: WPCR broadcasts, web site and Facebook
continue to surpass expectations with growing numbers.
Computer listeners (407) tuned in to our Easter Sunday
broadcast. Marsha Bordner and the Pre-school
committee will concentrate efforts on how the church
can better serve families of the children in this
important local mission. We will participate in “Welcome
Doors of Ottawa County,” a project of Leadership
Ottawa County, designed to encourage travel and
exploration of businesses and points of interest in our
area. Kay McIntosh has very graciously volunteered to
make a very special “door” for us.
Property/Landscape Management (John McIntosh,
Karen Coffin): County Building Inspector, David
Driggs, found no plumbing problems in our water supply
but noted that all commercial building are required to
have back-flow preventers. Cost is around $400. plus
installation. Several drainage issues are being
exasperated by heavy spring rains. An outdoor work
party is planned for May 5th. John Vardyan removed the
tree next to the Church Office and will get cost
estimates to refurbish outdoor A/C area.
Mission (Joyce Jagucki): Our One Great Hour of
Sharing Lenten offerings totaled $325. The American
Cancer Society daffodil sale raised $180.(thanks Lori
Madison). Our ongoing outreach programs are: Second
Sunday Sack program, Summer Lunch Program, Church
of the Nazarene monthly suppers and the coat collection
for Salvation Army for Christmas distribution. Currently,
we are collecting Baby Kits for the Disaster Assistance
program of the Presbyterian Church. The list of needed
items will continue in May’s “Trumpet.” We will host a
Mothers’ Day Tea for the pre-school in May. The
memorial service for Bud True will be at Firelands on
May 18 at 1 p.m. Pastors Bob Butcher and Jeanne will,
together, officiate at the service.
Preschool (Marsha Bordner): This committee has
been reorganized; it now includes the chair or member
of the Financial Stewardship and Mission Committees,
the Director of the Preschool, the accountant, the pastor
ex officio, and the Chair of the Preschool Committee. In
August of each year the Preschool Committee will review
and recommend a Preschool budget for approval by
Session and will review and approve any major changes
in policy or operations as proposed by the Director. In
April, the Committee will review and recommend fee
changes for the upcoming fall as appropriate, review the
current state of the budget for the remainder of the
year, review the upcoming summer program, review
salaries and make adjustments as appropriate, and
review and approve any major changes in policy and
operations as proposed by the Director.
Marsha also indicated that several other actions have
taken place with the Preschool. Evaluations will occur in
May (at the end of the school year), a new evaluation
form will be used, and the Preschool Manual has been
updated.
Agenda items at the Committee’s April meeting included
the following:
• Fees will remain the same in 2013-14, as we are in
the middle of fee structures within the local area.
• Karen has made two new hires as aides for the
program.
May 2013 Page 7
Session Minute Highlights, from p. 6
• Rachel will be having a baby in the fall.
(Congratulations!) Karen and Lauren will cover
during the time that Rachel is off.
• Budget. The Preschool is doing well thus far in the
year in terms of revenue and expenses.
• Summer Program—The parents have been asked
this summer to sign a letter of intent concerning the
number of days their children will attend; this letter
commits them to pay a certain amount each week.
At this time, 23 parents have made this
commitment.
Worship and Music (Jack Combs): Recorded sermons
on WPCR radio are being brought up by large numbers
of listeners at each report we get. We should explore
ways to learn more about the demographics of these
listeners and its other implications.
Report of the Pastor (Jeanne Gay): Pastor Jeanne’s
pleurisy persists but she is slowly improving.
Prayer concerns and prayer by Pastor Jeanne closed the
meeting.
Extraordinary! Firelands Bible Study at Magruder
Pentecost marks the end of Eastertide in the church and
the beginning of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time isn't about a particular time in Jesus' life; it's about our lives, our discipleship. I think of it as Where the Rubber Meets the Road Time. What an appropriate time, then, for us to start up our summer Bible Study again, this time at Magruder Hospital's dining area, every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.,
starting May 22. As in past years, we'll grab cups of coffee and something to eat if we want, and we'll study and discuss the Lectionary scriptures for the coming Sunday. Bring a Bible if you wish, but handouts of the texts will be
provided. Join us, and bring a friend!
