1998: The Vermont City Marathon Management Committee decided to limit the field to 5,000 runners to ensure top rate, quality runner services. After 2001, marathon and relay slots have been added each year to “test” if the course can successfully accommodate growth.
2004: The Vermont City Marathon introduced a 2-person relay team category, in addition to the 650 relay teams. 2004 also brought a lottery system for relay team registration. 25% of the slots were reserved for out-of-state teams and 75% of the slots were reserved for Vermonters.
2010: 2737 - Record number of marathon finishers.
2013: 25th running of the Vermont City Marathon.
2015: The Vermont City Marathon welcomes People’s United Bank as the new title sponsor.
2016: Course Changes - Come off bike path just past Oakledge. Return to Battery via Pine St. New finish in north end of Waterfront Park.

WEATHER TRENDSClimatology records tell us that we can expect a low of 49° and a high of 70° on Race Day. This translates to a temperature of about 54° at the 8:00 start of the race, with the temperature reaching about 67° by Noon. But those of us who live here know that those averages are just that – averages. More often than not, we see wild variations in our weather. The conditions for the PUBVCM over the years have run the gamut from snow, sleet and cold to sunny and hot. And of course, there has been rain and wind. And every now and then, we get one of those ideal “average” days. Here is a look at the race day weather for the last 12 years:
The key is to prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.Notable Weather• 1992 Snow/Rain/Sleet on Sunday’s race day: 80° Saturday – > 30° Sunday• 2006 Hottest race day on record: Noon – 82°+ • 2002 Gale-force winds during night and pre-race• 2013 Rain throughout the day. Junior Youth Relay participants work on everything related to running – how to dress for weather, proper nutrition, teamwork, setting goals, and, of course, having fun. We would like to thank the SKIRACK for fitting our Junior Youth Relay athletes with donated shoes from Brooks, Saucony and Pearl Izumi and socks from Darn Tough.

VERMONT CITY MARATHON & RELAY
182019 People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay Media Guide
RUNVERMONT HISTORYRUNVERMONT & VERMONT CITY MARATHON HISTORY Vermont City Marathon, Inc was established in 1989 by a small group of local runners who believed that Burlington, VT could support a large New England marathon event in the spring. The relay was organized in conjunction with the full marathon. This was one of the first marathon relay events in the United States. The Bank of Boston invested $13,000 in title sponsorship the first year. The KeyBank Vermont City Marathon was organized by an all-volunteer race committee from 1989 to 1992. In 1992 the race had grown to several thousand runners. The Board decided to hire a race director and administrator for the race. The Bank of Vermont donated office space, a graphic designer and registration administrators for several years. Since 1993, the event has grown tremendously both in numbers and status in the running industry. In 1998, a 5,000 runner cap was established to ensure the quality of runners’ services and the integrity of the event. In 2001, the cap was raised another 500 runners based on runner and organizer feedback. In 2005, the number of runners was increased by 400 to 7,000 runners. In the January 2002 issue of Runner’s World, the leading running publication in the world, the Vermont City Marathon was ranked one of the top 20 best marathon events in the United States. This year over 8,000 runners will be registered for the event. The People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon was also named one of the “10 Great Places for Runners to Hit the Road” (USA Today, 5/2009), “Top 5 Destination Marathon” (Outside Magazine, 5/2012), “Top 10 Best Events in Vermont” (Vermont State Chamber 2015), “Best Event” (Seven Daysies - Best of Vermont 2014,2015,2016) and “Fast, Family Friendly Race” (Runner’s World 2013).
TRANSITION TO RUNVERMONTWith the creation and growth of the Youth Running & Activity program along with other events (First Run, Sport & Fitness Expo, Half Marathon Unplugged) the name Vermont City Marathon, Inc. no longer fit the name of the organization. An umbrella name was needed for the non-profit organization that houses all of these programs and events. The name RunVermont was created with the help of stakeholders, Board members and staff. Select Design was hired to create the logo and official colors in 2004. The Vermont City Marathon, Inc. mission statement was changed to reflect this growth in scope as well. The current operating budget of RunVermont is more than $1.1M.
RUNVERMONT MISSION STATEMENT: RunVermont supports running as a lifelong activity by producing exceptional events and programs that engage our community and celebrate the athletic spirit.
RunVermont is a Not-For-Profit Organization 501(c)(3)
