FiRST THOUGHTSDavid Hull, Pastor

Special days are important. They help us to emphasize and focus on the things that are important to us all through the year. For example, we should treat each other with love and respect every day, but a birthday gives a special reason to focus on someone important. Every day we should be thankful for the gifts that come from God, but Thanksgiving Day gives an emphasis to our gratitude. We should live our lives in the knowledge that God has given to us the greatest gift in Jesus Christ, but Christmas is

a special day to help us remember this gift. As Christians our lives are always lived in the hopeful power of the resurrection, but Easter is a special day to call forth praise and renewed hope. Special days are important. They help us remember what we could be doing every day.

This Sunday is one of those special days. We are calling it “Join in!” Sunday. it will be a special offering in support of the ministry and missions of our church. Each year about this time we have such a special offering. A note in this newsletter from Bob Broadway, our Finance Committee Chair, will tell you more about our financial needs right now. You may use this offering as a chance to catch up on your giving if you have fallen behind. It may be that you have been financially blessed beyond what you expected, and you can offer an extra gift to the Lord in gratitude for your abundant blessings. Finally, you may have never tried tithing – this might be a good opportunity for you to do that and take the first step on the way to giving 10% of your income to God.

i invite you to Join in! with your special offering this Sunday. Of course we receive an offering every Sunday, but occasionally we need a special day to remind us to join our hearts, hands, and gifts in gratitude and obedience to God. i encourage your generous participation this Sunday as we Join in! together.

i also invite you to Join in! on Sunday night for the “Music of the Spheres.” This will be a wonderful concert by our Orchestra and Adult Handbell Choir. invite a friend to join you for the evening. it will be a special night.

Special days are important, aren’t they? See you Sunday.

I invite you to "Join In" on May 6. As a family, we have set forth some great and wonderful new goals in the recent years, and together we need to make it happen. This Stewardship Emphasis Sunday is an opportunity for us as a family to "catch-up" on our annual giving. Currently, we are at about 10% below budget. That means we are $250,000 behind where we expected to be at this point in the year. While our staff has done an outstanding job working within the actual

giving, the Finance Committee believes that a more solid financial ground now will help get us over the giving slump of summer when giving isn’t as much in our thoughts as vacations and well-deserved rest. Increased giving aids ALL areas of our budget, including Ministry and Missions. Likewise, decreased giving also has an effect on all areas.

This year, let's try something new. Let's set a new bar for ourselves. I challenge you as a family to keep focused on your giving so that our church family can stay at or even ahead of budget during summer months. This will make it less stressful in the fall when we are typically trying to "catch up" before year-end. Let's do it NOW! Let's "catch up" NOW! We feel each other’s pain in this economy and with job losses. We are all here together, as one family, and we are here to work together. Giving what you can, and going above what you could normally do, could help out those who are not able to participate as much as they could have in the past. If God has blessed you with more than expected this year, I am certain that He would admire a hearty giver. "To whom much has been given, much is expected." Luke 12:48

I encourage each of us to "dig deep" (as our Pastor Emeritus would say!) and let's "CATCH UP" now on our giving. Let's pitch in for those in our Church Family whose household income has been affected by the current economy. I am confident that together we can "Join in" and make a difference for our future, as well as our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

You may use this offering as a chance to catch up on your giving if you have fallen behind. It may be that you have been financially blessed beyond what you expected, and you can offer an extra gift to the Lord in gratitude for your abundant blessings.
