Prayer for the Persecuted, Monday, May 18th Join us on at St. Pius X, 6 - 7 pm, to pray for all of those
in Syria and Iraq who have been mercilessly persecuted by
ISIS. Millions of our brothers and sisters have been forced
to flee their homes and lives due to violence. Many end up in refugee camps, but even more seek shelter in abandoned
and dilapidated buildings. Children are unable to go to
school and families are often without basic living essen-tials. However, with God there is hope. Let us lift those
who are suffering in prayer, where we know they will not
be forgotten, and pray that God will change the hearts of those in ISIS. We will also learn from the Southeastern di-
rector of Catholic Relief Services, Cullen Larson, how our
Church is changing lives in these regions in our name, and
the action we can take to ensure that this work continues.

From the Pastor’s Desk
News articles this week announced that at his weekly audience, Pope Francis was sounding like a femi-nist. When I read his remarks, I find him sounding like a Pope, a preacher of the Gospel, and a teacher of the truth about human dignity. In speaking about the challenges facing married life, he said:
“The difficulties are not only of an economic character, although these are truly serious. Many hold that the change that has happened in these last decades has to do with the emancipation of woman. However, this argument is not valid either; it is a falsehood, it’s not true! It is a form of machismo that always wants to dominate woman. We make the bad figure that Adam made when God said to him: “Why have you eaten the fruit of the tree?” and he an-swered: “The woman gave it to me.” And the fault is the woman’s. Poor woman! We must defend women! In reality, almost all men and women would like affective stability, a solid marriage and a happy family. The family is at the top of all the indexes of satisfaction among young people; however, out of fear of making a mistake, many do not even want to think about it; although they are Christians, they do not think of sacramental marriage, unique and unrepeatable sign of the alliance, which becomes a testimony of faith. In fact, perhaps this fear of failing is the great-est obstacle to receiving the word of Christ, who promises his grace to the conjugal union and to the family. The most persuasive testimony of the blessing of Christian marriage is the good life of Christian spouses and of the family. “
As always, Pope Francis recognizes that the burdens of misguided culture and immoral economic systems fall disproportionately on the poor. He said:
“The Christian seed of the radical equality between spouses must bear new fruits today. The testimony of the social dignity of marriage will become persuasive in fact this way, the way of witness that attracts, the way of reci-procity between them, of the complementarity between them. Therefore, as Christians, we must become more exact-ing in this regard. For instance: to support with determination the right of equal compensation for equal work, why is it taken for granted that women must earn less than men? No! They have the same rights. The disparity is a pure scandal! At the same time, to recognize the maternity of women and the paternity of men as an always valid rich-ness, for the benefit especially of children. Likewise, the virtue of hospitality of Christian families is of crucial im-portance today, especially in situations of poverty, degradation and family violence.”
So if some people feel like Pope Francis is agreeing with their positions, it is not because he is coming over to “their side”. It is because they have grasped part of the Church teaching on human dignity!
