Funeral Homily for †Frank Kindel and †Jesus Valencia
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last night, the Vigil for the Deceased and the Holy Rosary began the healing consolation of Moth-er Church in our time of grief. Now this second and most important rite of the Church, the Holy Mass, is our principal prayer for the deceased and for our making sense of the untimely deaths of †Frank Kindel and †Jesús Valencia. The sanctuary of the church shows various aspects of our faith especially this time of the year. The color white represents the resplendent light of Christ, the Resur-rection of the Lord, and the purity of our faith. The color blue highlights that we are in the month of May, which is dedicated to Our Lady. †Frank and †Jesús had a special love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. The color purple represents the expectation of the Lord in Advent as well as the penance of Lent. The Paschal Candle represents the light of Christ that scatters the darkness — especially in times of grief and sadness in which we need the light of Christ to guide us. The flowers represent new life — not only that we are in Springtime, but Eastertide is a reminder of the new life that the Risen Christ brings. And in the midst of everything, the crucifix is a stark reminder of the death of our Lord that was necessary to take place for new life. It may seem like a contradiction. Even in the time of St. Paul, the death of Jesus was an obstacle to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to believers: Christ the Power of God and the Wisdom of God. We as Christians know that death is part of life, and that for believers, death is not an ending but a new beginning. And yet it does not make it any easier. †Frank and †Jesús died far too young (they were both only a mere 65 years young). They had so much life and love to give. And yet the Lord took their life. We know we are not supposed to question God, but our human rationality asks the natural question, “Why? Why could the Lord not have given them at least a few more years? Why could the doctors not find the source of the cancer in Frank’s body, or cure the problem with Jesús’ pulmonary fibrosis?” And we will never know the answers to these questions — at least in this life. We heard in the second reading from Revelation 21, “Behold, I make all things new.” St. John the Evangelist gets a glance of the New Creation at the end of time, in which God makes His definitive dwelling with man. Right now, in this “in between” time — that Christ has come and redeemed us but we are still waiting for His final return — we look forward to this new creation when “every tear will be wiped away, and there shall be no more death, no more mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.” This is what gives us the theological virtue of hope. Hope is what gets us through the tears, the pain, and the questions that arise in our hearts. And prayer is that which strengthens faith and hope. And so we pray this Mass as well as all the Masses we will attend the rest of our lives. The Mass is the encounter with the risen Lord under the veil of the sacrament, and at every Mass we are closest to our deceased loved ones in the Lord who are part of the Communion of Saints — even those un-dergoing purification. We pray for ourselves, for those who mourn, and for the souls of the faithful departed — that they may Rest In Peace.

Homilia del Funeral de †Frank Kindel y †Jesus Valencia Queridos hermanas y hermanas en Cristo, Anoche, en la Vigilia por los Difuntos y el Santo Rosario comenzó con el consuelo sanador de la Madre Iglesia en nuestro tiempo de dolor. Ahora, en el segundo y más importante rito de la Iglesia, la Santa Misa, es nuestra oración principal por los difuntos y para dar sentido a las muertes prematuras de † Frank Kindel y † Jesús Valencia. El santuario de la iglesia muestra diversos aspectos de nuestra fe especialmente en esta época del año. El color blanco representa la luz resplandeciente de Cristo, la Resurrección del Señor y la pureza de nuestra fe. El color azul resalta que estamos en el mes de mayo, que está dedicado a Nuestra Señora. † Frank y † Jesús tenían un amor especial por la Santísi-ma Virgen María. El color púrpura representa la expectativa del Señor en Adviento, así como la peni-tencia de la Cuaresma. El Cirio Pascual representa la luz de Cristo que dispersa la oscuridad, espe-cialmente en tiempos de dolor y tristeza en los que necesitamos que la luz de Cristo nos guíe. Y en medio de todo, el crucifijo es un recordatorio claro de la muerte de nuestro Señor que fue necesaria para tener lugar para una vida nueva . Puede parecer una contradicción. Incluso en la época de San Pablo, la muerte de Jesús fue un obstáculo para los judíos y una necedad para los gentiles, pero para los creyentes: Cristo, el poder de Dios y la sabiduría de Dios. Nosotros como Cristianos sabemos que la muerte es parte de la vida, y que para los creyentes, la muerte no es un final, sino un nuevo comienzo. Y, sin embargo, no es fácil. † Frank y † Jesús murieron demasiado jóvenes (ambos tenían solo 65 años de edad). Tenían tanta vida y amor para dar. Y, sin embargo, el Señor les quitó la vida. Esto es lo que nos da la virtud teológica de la esperanza. La esperanza es lo que nos lleva a través de las lágrimas, el dolor y las preguntas que surgen en nuestros corazones. Y la oración es lo que fortalece la fe y la esperanza. Y entonces oremos en esta Misa, así como en todas las Misas a las que asistiremos el resto de nuestras vidas. La Misa es el encuentro con el Señor resucitado bajo el velo de la Santa Cena, y en cada Misa estamos más cerca de nuestros seres queridos fallecidos en el Señor que son parte de la Comunión de los Santos, incluso aquellos que están bajo purifi-cación. Oremos por nosotros mismos, por los que lloran y por las almas de los fieles difuntos, para que descanse en paz.
