TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life. May 1 was considered the begin-ning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lin-gered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called "Lady Month," which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary. Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome reme-dy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice. Devoting May to Mary is un-doubtedly a better thing to do. --Rev. James Field

FATHER ANTHONY’S FAITH FORMATION CORNER

The Mass: Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist

The month of May is when a lot of Catholic churches around the world celebrate first communion masses for young chil-dren. I have mentioned many times the meaning of the MASS: that it is a sending forth. Today I would like to elaborate on the two-fold importance of the mass: namely that it contains the liturgy of the Word, which ends with the Creed and the Prayer of the Faith-ful, and the liturgy of the Eucharist which begins with the offering of the gifts. Catholics used to think that the liturgy of the Eucharist is the more important aspect, but hold on… A very important docu-

ment of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the dogmatic constitution on Divine Revelation entitled Dei Verbum, states: “The church has always venerated the divine scriptures as it has venerated the Body of the Lord, in that it never ceases, above all in the sacred liturgy [i.e., the Mass] to partake of the bread of life and to offer it to the faithful from the one table of the word of God and the Body of Christ,” (# 21). These words from Dei Verbum obviously remind us of the importance of both scripture and Eucharist. Ever since the time of the Reformation in the 16th century, Catholics have tended to overemphasize the Sacrament of the Eu-charist to the point that the Word of God was neglected. Perhaps that was a way to react to the common Protestant idea of scripture alone, sola scriptura. Some elderly Catholics today may remember that before Vatican II, sermons were thematic rather than scriptural. For example, this week the preacher would speak about the seven deadly sins; next week the theme will be about the cardinal virtues; and so on. While these topics were important for Catholic life, most often they had little to do with the scriptures of the day. Also the options for biblical readings were rather limited back then—as opposed to today’s liturgy when the faithful have a chance to hear from all four Gospels and many books/letters in both the Old and New Testaments. Furthermore, before Vatican II, one could have missed most of the Mass—the Gloria, the Creed, the Epistle and Gospel and homily—and still could have fulfilled their “Sunday obligation” if one were to come in time for the consecration of the Eucharist. That was because the sole stress was on the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Thanks be to the renewal of theology/liturgy/ecclesiology of Vatican II, the liturgy in the post-conciliar (after the council) era has offered the Catholic faithful a more balanced view of things. Now the emphasis is not only on the Eucharist, but also on the scriptures. The homily tries to explain the word of God in a way that makes that word “ever ancient and ever new:” that is, being faithful to God’s word in its original context but at the same time making it rele-vant in our present-day context—an extremely difficult task for the conscientious preacher! In addition to all this, many parishes today have different Bible study groups to break open God’s word. Biblical commentaries—both Protestant and Catholic, both European and non-European—are also quite helpful in these regards. I have heard Catholics saying things like: “The Protestants have the Bible, but Catholics have the Eucharist.” The truth is that we have both. I want Catholics to treasure both the Word (scripture) and the Sacrament (Eucharist), because we believe that the Lord comes to us both in Word and in Sacrament, as one of the penitential rites reminds us.
