Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner Word and Sacrament

In one of the Penitential Rites at the beginning of Mass, we pray: “Lord Je-sus, you come in word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness; Lord have mercy.” What does it mean when we say that the Lord comes in “word and sac-rament?” The expression itself has a rich history in Christian theology and litur-gy, the significance of which is beyond the scope of this article. Essentially the expression means that the Lord comes to us both in the word

proclaimed (the sacred scriptures) and the sacrament (of the Eucharist). The Mass today is fittingly divided into two parts: the Liturgy of the Word which ends with the Creed and the Prayer of the Faithful; and the Liturgy of the Eu-charist which begins with the offering of the gifts. A very important document of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the dogmatic constitution on Divine Revelation entitled Dei Verbum, states: “The church has always venerated the divine scriptures as it has venerated the Body of the Lord, in that it never ceases, above all in the sacred liturgy [i.e., the Mass] to partake of the bread of life and to offer it to the faithful from the one table of the word of God and the Body of Christ,” (# 21). These words from Dei Verbum obviously remind us of the importance of both scripture and Eucharist. Ever since the time of the Reformation in the 16th century, Catholics have tended to overemphasize the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the point that the Word of God was neglected. Perhaps that was a way to react to the common Protestant idea of scripture alone, sola scriptura. Some elderly Catholics today may remember that before Vatican II, sermons were thematic rather than scriptural. For example, this week the preacher would speak about the seven deadly sins; next week the theme will be about the cardinal virtues; and so on. While these topics were important for Catholic life, most often they had little to do with the scriptures of the day. Also the options for biblical readings were rather limited back then—as opposed to today’s liturgy when the faithful have a chance to hear from all 4 Gospels and many books/letters in both the Old and New Testaments. Furthermore, before Vatican II, one could have missed most of the Mass—the Gloria, the Creed, the Epistle and Gospel and homily—and still could have fulfilled their “Sunday obligation” if one were to come in time for the consecration of the Eucharist. That was be-cause the sole stress was on the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Thanks be to the renewal of theology/liturgy/ecclesiology of Vatican II, the liturgy in the post-conciliar (after the council) era has offered the Catholic faithful a more balanced view of things. Now the emphasis is not only on the Eucharist, but also on the scriptures. The homily tries to explain the word of God in a way that makes that word “ever ancient and ever new:” that is, being faithful to God’s word in its original context but at the same time making it relevant in our present-day context—an extremely difficult task for the conscientious preacher! In addition to all this, many parishes today have different Bible study groups to break open God’s word. Biblical commentaries—both Protestant and Catholic, both European and non-European—are also quite helpful in these regards. One more word about word and sacrament: the words word and sacrament can also be used colloquially to refer to the direction a certain parish (or group) is heading. For example, a parish that is quite liberal in its outlook—with strong emphases on social justice issues like immigration reforms, just wage for workers, equal distribution of wealth, etc.—may be labeled as “all word and no sacrament”. In contrast, a traditional parish that focuses mainly on official Church teachings: especially on abortion and contraception, on devotions to the Blessed Mother and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, on private revelations of this or that saint—that parish is “all sacrament and no word.” As for us, we believe that Jesus comes to us not only in the one or the other, but both in word and in sacrament.

COÄNG ÑOAØN THAÙNH GIUSE

CHÚA NHẬT TUẦN 6 PS – A Ga 14,15-21 ĐẤNG BẢO TRỢ ẨN MÌNH “Thầy sẽ xin Cha và Thầy sẽ ban cho anh em một Đấng Bảo Trợ khác để ở với anh em luôn mãi.”

(Ga 14,16)

Suy niệm: Khi ở với môn đệ, Chúa Giê-su vừa là Thầy, vừa là Đấng Bảo Trợ các ông. Nay sắp rời bỏ các ông về trời, Ngài hứa ban một Đấng Bảo Trợ khác thay Ngài. Đấng Bảo Trợ ấy chính là Chúa Thánh Thần, Ngài dường như ẩn mình nhưng luôn hiện diện và hoạt động cách vô hình trong Hội Thánh cho đến ngày tận thế. Chúa Giê-su đã ví Thánh Thần giống như gió “muốn thổi đâu thì thổi, ta nghe tiếng gió nhưng không biết từ đâu tới và thổi đi đâu” (Ga 3,8). Ước mơ của Chúa Giê-su là ngọn lửa Ngài đã ném vào mặt đất được bùng lên (x. Lc 12,49). Bây giờ ước mơ nồng cháy ấy của Ngài được hiện thực qua Thánh Thần, Đấng đốt lửa kính mến Chúa và soi sáng, hướng dẫn lương tri con người. Những việc tốt lành ta làm, các con người tốt của thế giới đều do chính Thánh Thần thúc đẩy, là hoa quả do tác động của Ngài.

Mời Bạn: Tân sáng tạo là hoạt động của Thánh Thần, Ngài canh tân và hoàn thành mọi sự (x. Kh 21&22). Cuộc sáng tạo mới ấy vẫn đang tiếp diễn trên thế giới, bạn có muốn góp một tay vào cuộc sáng tạo mới ấy ngay trong xã hội của bạn không?

Comunidad Hispana PUEBLO DE ESPERANZA Durante este tiempo de Pascua las lecturas nos han llevado por la experiencia de la Iglesia en sus primeros días. Hemos saboreado el entusiasmo y el celo de los primeros cristianos. Ahora, con ellos, escuchamos las palabras de san Pedro, que nos recuerda que cuando la gente note que somos pueblo de esperanza, debemos estar preparados para explicar por qué, lo cual nos presenta un reto. ¿Será que otros sí notan que somos pueblo de esperanza? En un mundo marcado por el cinismo y la desesperanza, ¿nos destacamos por ser personas que ofrecen esperanza y confianza a los otros? En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús promete que cuando deje esta tierra no nos dejará huérfanos. Hoy promete enviar al Consolador, el Espíritu de la verdad que siempre permanecerá con nosotros. Reconozcamos la presencia del Espíritu Santo y pidamos al Espíritu que nos haga pueblo de esperanza.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En Uruguay se celebra la fiesta patronal más grande durante el mes de junio. Celebran a san Cono, un santo italiano del siglo doce. En el siglo diecinueve los inmigrantes italianos que vivían en Uruguay deseaban tener una capilla para honrar la memoria de este santo, oriundo de la provincia de Salerno, Italia. En junio de 1885, las campanas de una modesta capillita anunciaron el recibimiento de una imagen de san Cono que llegó en procesión. Desde entonces esta costumbre italiana se fue haciendo parte integral de la devoción cristiana en Uruguay. Cono fue el hijo único de una pareja anciana que vivía en la ciudad de Teggiano, Salerno. Según la leyenda, una noche mientras dormían, esta pareja soñó un cono de luz que brotaba de la madre. Al nacer el niño decidieron llamarlo Cono. Desde muy niño, Cono mostró un afán por las cosas de Dios y a los dieciséis años ingresó a un monasterio benedictino siguiendo el consejo de una voz interior que lo invitaba a consagrase al Señor. A los dieciocho, su monasterio se llenó de luz y una voz anunció su muerte, y al día siguiente falleció. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM

Students Raise Money to Build $15K All School Science Lab

Students raised half the money need-ed to build an All School STEAM Sci-ence Lab. With the theme of FULL STEAM AHEAD, a goal of $15,000 was set to purchase science stools, microscopes, beakers, a mobile sink, and other equipment needed for the new STEAM curriculum. Incorporating science, technology, engineering, art, and math, teachers from all grades will be able to use the lab for hands-on STEM and STEAM projects.
