What a great month we just had, with tremendous partici-pation in our Maverick Re-
gion events!
• Our April Drivers’ Education event at MotorSport Ranch had a huge turn-out (over 130 drivers) de-
spite the rain on Sunday morning.
• Our Drive to Germanfest in Muenster had an in-credible 91 Porsches on the tour – an all-time high!
• The annual May at Mayo’s car show and dinner attracted 45 pristine Porsches (plus a special Jaguar XK140) and over 160 members, the larg-est crowd in the 25-year history of this event!
• Plus our Autocross, Time Trials, Maverick Monthly Socials and lunches are all well-attended.
Thank you for participating in the events that are being held, and for inviting other Porsche owners to join our club. Each month we are setting new records for our total number of members, and we’re inching closer to the 2,500 number for the Maverick Region. My hope and expectation is that we shall surpass that number before the end of 2014.
So take a look at the calendar in this magazine on page one, visit mav.pca.org or watch for my monthly email and check out the events that appeal to you. Then come join us as we find more ways to have a little more fun in life as a part of the Porsche Club.
Mav of the Month
The name of this Mav of the Month has been in every Slipstream for many years. It’s our member in charge of the Office of Publication,
who has his name on the back cover of each issue. Hiram Saunders has served many roles in the Maverick Region over the years, but this one he has kept.
One of his interesting duties is to handle the maga-zines that are returned to him due to mailing address problems. Earlier this year Hiram implemented a new process of follow-up that has already resolved several address issues that have existed for years!
So Hiram: this one’s for you. Thank you for staying the course for Slipstream over the years, and thank you for improving the way in which we ensure it gets to our members. Enjoy your gift card to the Silver Fox . . . you deserve it!

The meeting began at 7:05 pm. President John Hamil-ton welcomed back guests
Wesley & Natalie Lincoln. He asked that reports be concise so the meet-ing could end earlier than recent times. A suggestion was made to have all event chairs produce a writ-
ten report to help the secretary with minutes and to keep the reports on topic as much as possible.
VP Gareth Maurice mentioned that he has been in contact with the PCA National chair and is excited to work on the Street Survival course for Maverick Region. He wants to reach out to younger members. He’s looking for sponsorship opportunities. The biggest need will be for instructors. Target date will be a single day in the fall, avoiding bad days like SAT and ACT test days, etc. The fee is $75 nationally, encouraging teens to show up after they sign up (it used to be free, which makes it too easy to cancel).
Concours Chair Andy Kay talked briefly about the upcoming May at Mayo’s event, which was all set. Has great Porsche-approved medals as awards. On May 18 will be the detailing clinic at Jack Griffin’s garage. He’s also looking ahead to the Concours event at the Cooper Aerobics Center (needs easels & signs). He wants to elevate the Concours program this year for more serious participants.
Social Chair Tracy Rob-ertson also commented that May at Mayo’s is all set, with helpers in place. She hopes most of the board members will come. There were already over 100 people signed up. She has also been working to support other events through the year.
PR Chair Linda Bambina has been working hard on her “Garage Glimpses” feature for Slipstream. She has also been working
with Billy Hibbs from Tyler to bring an event to his garage. They’re working on guest speakers, a silent auction for charity, etc. Mr. Hibbs wants to charge $100 per person, since it’s a charitable event, but there were some board members thinking that was too high. Too many details up in the air to report on, but once she nails them down, she will get information out there.
Tourmeister John Harvey reported that the drive to Muenster had 91 cars and over 150 people! Despite many adverse conditions, the drivers seemed to have fun, particularly at Germanfest. It was the largest drive participation ever and they continue to look for ways to make the events even smoother. Plans are on for the June 8 drive to Grandpappy Point, which is about 140 miles. The committee decided that the pre-drive events will be limited to leaders and sweep cars only to prevent insurance problems.
Rally Chair Don Sebert said the Gimmick Rally is set for Saturday, August 2, beginning in the morning to avoid the heat. The route has been chosen from Plano through the Lake Country to the Isla Morada restaurant on Lake Ray Hubbard. Details were to be determined. He expressed great appreciation for the
work done at the COTA event by Wendy Shoffit and staff. It was a smooth event and we all did a good job.
Brendan Eagan men-tioned that the tour to Grandpappy Point will be going across a great one-lane wooden bridge over the Red River. He echoed John’s comments that they are working on Sunday Drive improvements.
AX/TT Chair Travis Howard worked grid at the COTA Club Race and had a great team. He reminded everyone about the May 18 Autocross School coming up that needs volunteers. He also added that there’s a normal Autocross Series event at Pennington Field on Sunday, May 25.

Membership Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich gave their report that our membership continues to climb to record levels. We have 1,437 Primary members and 2,365 total members! PCA National is very close to their stated 66K membership goal. They want to change the article name in Slipstream to “New Mavericks” rather than “New Wheels” to eliminate confusion about the article naming owners of new vehicles. They are also going to add trans-fers to their report every month. Perhaps we can find a way for existing members to announce new purchases.
Drivers’Education and Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit reported that the April DE at MotorSport Ranch was a huge success and signups for the May/June event were going well. The Club Race at COTA was a great event and we’re hoping to get positive news about the financials of it. One of the greatest parts about the
COTA event was that the track allowed us to do Parade laps at lunchtime for charity. We raised nearly $4500 in total for three regions to split amongst our charities.
Editor Carey Spreen said that the May issue was in the mail the prior week and the June issue is in the works. He will need to get the July issue done early, as his normal processing time would be while he’s traveling to Parade. So, he moved his deadline up to June 1 (or thereabouts) for content submission.
John Hamilton finished up by announcing the Maverick of the Month, Hiram Saunders, for his many years of service helping with Slip Slipstream mailing issues (no pun intended!).
The meeting was adjourned at around 8:30 pm.

Battle of the Sexes. Does that sound
familiar to you? That was the tagline given to the Bobby Riggs vs Billie Jean King ten-nis match some 40+ years ago. Yep, it was
that long ago and it took place on Sep-tember 20, 1973.Well, Maverick Region PCA was up and
running and about 10 years old by then. Somewhere along the line, someone came up with the idea of a Trivia Column all about Porsches, and someone else got Zims to donate a $25 Gift Certificate to the Winner of each month’s Trivia Contest.I remember my first entry into Trivia back
in August of 2007, where I got four of five correct and was an Honorable Mention. Made me so angry at myself, as I knew the answer to the question I missed, but I was thinking in pounds vs kilograms, and marked it wrong. So I was “just” an Honor-able Mention, not a Winner!Well, I had so much fun with it, and
thought about all of little bits of knowledge
I had from owning a 1961 356B Normal, a 1963 356B Super, a 1978 European 930 Turbo, and then a 1967 911S Targa, that I stepped up and offered to write the Trivia Contest for ONE MONTH. Bob Kuykend-all accepted and offered for me to take it over, as he would liked to have had some time off. Well, Bob, “It has been almost 7 years now, are you all rested up yet?” Just kidding -- I am still having fun.OK, OK, I will get to the point. In the al-
most seven years I have been doing this, I have ONLY had TWO (2) entries from the Ladies!!! TWO!!!What is the problem here? You gals
do NOT seem to worry about kickin’ our Male Butts on the Autocross Track. Do you Myra, Jan, Wendy, Sigrid, Robyn, Betty, and Fran? And I have personally been outscored by a “goil” in a Hill Coun-try Rally Trivia Quiz, and she offered NO apology whatsoever.I remember growing up in the 50s and
60s, when none of the girls wanted to be too much of a “jock” or too studious. They just wanted to be feminine and dateable. Well OK, but it is now 2014, and I know that a number of you gals are very Porsche-knowledgeable, and you darn sure are not worried about who will ask you to the Prom. But where are your entries? I know you know how to read magazines, and I know you know how to do research on a subject with Google; so where are your entries?
Oh, I know, you don’t want to be embar-rassed because you may not do well. Do NOT worry about that, as no one sees YOUR answers but Wendy Shoffit and me, and we know Wendy will never tattle on you. And even Wendy does not know the answers until I publish them; no one does! And trust me, my memory is reserved for getting items at the Grocery Store without calling home and asking Mary what else she wanted, so I would never remember how you did.Now you may be asking yourself, “Self,
just what does Zims have that I might ever want, should I win?” Well first of all, you could always send the $25 Gift Certificate to me, as I have no way of winning; or you could give it to that handsome devil you reside with, or date, for his Birthday; or you could donate it for the Founder’s Day Silent Auction; or you could just go get something for yourself.Hey, you can get a Porsche 914-

I am sure that it is common knowledge
how technologies developed for space have made it into the average world of consum-
ers. Thanks to the engineers at NASA, we have products available for purchase, like scratch-resistant eye glasses, memory foam, athletic shoe insoles, cordless power tools, and water filters. But what if I told you that NASA and other space-based corporations are taking a different path by helping car com-panies design and engineer tech-nologies for our vehicles? BMW and Lexus have already paired up with mechanical engineers developing new technologies for their lineup of luxury vehicles; is Porsche next?
NASA and automobiles go way back. In the 1960s, NASA devel-oped safety grooving for aircraft runways at the Langley Research Center. Civil engineers were amazed at how well the grooves improved the safety of taxiing aircraft, and decided to use the concept on regular roads. The result later became to be known as the “rumble strips” that are on our highways today. Lately the space agency has been working with BMW and Lexus developing technologies that improve fuel efficiency and protect various areas of the vehicle.
For NASA’s space probes that venture out into deep space, engineers invented a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) that transfers the heat created by decaying plutonium into useable
electricity. Now our cars don’t run on plutonium (man, that would be one hot 911!), but BMW has taken the RTG concept and applied it to an issue that all cars face: the loss of energy in a combustion engine.

to develop a system that uses the wasted heat of the engine and con-verts it into useable energy that can be stored in the vehicle’s battery. To do this they have settled on using a semi-conductive element called Bismuth Telluride and placed it as a link between the engine’s cool-ant and exhaust manifold. The result is an induced charge that is created when the two separate ends of the element are heated and cooled. The current provided by this system is then directed to the battery. Mass application of this technology in BMW production is still years away. Some of the issues that are hindering the development are the cost of the technology, the cost of the materials used, and storage capacities (beyond that of the battery). But if they can successfully achieve their goals, fuel efficiency of BMW mid-sized sedans could increase by 10-15%.
Lexus has already implemented their NASA-collaborated technolo-
gies on their cars. On most new model Lexus vehicles (2012 and up), the company sprayed a pro-tective ceramic coating that was originally developed by NASA. The coating, which is sprayed on the body of the car, protects against outside elements, like the effects of gravel, rock chips, scratches, and keeps the paint color vibrant. The coating is also used on the interior of the vehicle; the treated upholstery protects against dirt and dust, and keeps the interior looking like new for longer.
One of the most important au-tomotive technological advances pioneered by NASA is the Low Temperature Oxidation Catalyst (LTOC). The LTOC is basically a catalytic converter, meaning that it greatly reduces the amount of carbon monoxide emissions pro-duced by a combustion engine by filtering it. The difference between the LTOC and a typical catalytic converter is that the latter only starts to work after the entire system has been heated up. When a driver hops in his car and turns the key, the first few minutes while the car is running, the engine exhaust is rela-tively unfiltered. The LTOC, as the name implies, means that the filtra-tion starts earlier and at a much lower temperature. This greatly de-creases the amount of carbon mon-oxide emitted with the exhaust.
In the NASCAR racing world, the Penske Racing team implemented the LTOC in their fleet, and miraculously took the technology even further. Their goal was to improve air quality around the race track and pit areas. Driving at high speeds with extremely powerful engines, race car drivers are exposed to massive amounts of carbon monoxide, both within the pit lanes and while on the track. To combat the issue, Penske devel-oped a filtration system that, when combined with the LTOC, converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. This greatly improves the driver’s quality of air breathed in, and provides a safer environment for all that are involved in racing.
No one knows what the next space-based technology will be, but one can surely bet that derivatives of it will trickle down to automobile developers and into our garages.

The Aventurine Green Metallic paint on his “classic air-cooled and air-conditioned” 2005 993 (with the unique-to-the-model “basket handle” deck lid) has its own matchless “story,” including why it is named Frog 1. This color reminds me of those chameleon paints on hot rods, but it is much more subtle and rich depending on the angle and type of light.
Frank’s classic 1930 Model A is a deep navy blue with a thin pin stripe in pale yellow, which is just below the famous Henry-Ford-Black that is perfection. Frank didn’t restore the paint, but he did do the engine himself (a fearless and self-taught engineer/mechan-
ic), adding many modern safety features as well as the entire interior!
Frank and Bobbie have traveled all over the country, including several years at the Winns-boro Autumn Trails Event, collecting trophies, friends and memories as they went. Again, there are some grand stories asso-ciated with Frank’s years of being a very active Antique Automobile Club of America member. Ask him about the time he and his car were cast in the Award winning
movie “Places in the Heart,” and hobnobbing with Ed Harris, Sally Field, Dan-ny Glover, and John Malkovich. Both he AND the car got paid!
Frank was first a Navy Officer and then a banker, so
details and organization are part of his world. While his working garage is meticulously clean and well-planned, the walls are filled with art and memories with the cars. He and interior decorator wife Bobbie painted the walls gray and added a dramatic wide red stripe. Bobbie is also a professional water color artist, and her painting of a rusty old car in a farm yard is a perfect complement to the trophies, photos, plaques, and signs that harken back to the 1930s era of their Model A. The other walls hold a banner from the St. Charles Porsche Parade (another story!), posters from Fiesta del Porsche (ah, those were the days!) and a Highway Patrolman’s warning ticket inside an empty front license plate from Boardwalk that has a GREAT story behind it. Too bad I’m out of space; I know you’d love to hear the story about when Frank had his own Rock ‘N Roll band!

You know, the thing with writ-
ing a multi-month continuing story is that you need to understand
the context, the back story to pull everything together. So you could go back and open the past couple of issues of Slipstream and catch up, or you could take if from me, it’s pretty long and convoluted. Ready? Here it goes…pay atten-tion, as it gets complicated: BBQ, Austin’s SXSW and a Porsche Cayman S. Whew, that was tough, glad you stayed there with me.
So to pick up the thread, we had so far visited two BBQ joints, two Tex-Mex places, two food truck and heard something like ten bands, so when Saturday hit we were pretty worn out. I may have still had a bit of a food baby thing going from the previous day. But Saturday turned out to be a carbon copy of the pre-vious day. Cloudy, looking like rain, but all you felt was the high humid-ity. This was going to be our two-fer day. Nearby Lockhart features two of the top five BBQ restaurants in Texas: Smitty’s and Kreuz. So we pointed our Cayman S down High-way 183 and headed to Lockhart.
First up in Lockhart was Smitty’s Market (208 S. Commerce St, Lockhart, TX 78644 / 512-398-9844 / www.smittysmarket.com), and like everywhere we visited so far, we lined up. The line snaked past the open flames feeding the pits. I was wearing shorts and could feel the heat almost singe my bare skin. We got up to the counter and
I ordered a half pound of brisket and a half pound of ribs. We’d gotten smarter. We paid for the meat, cash only, and went inside the dining area to get our sides of slaw and beans and drinks. We sat at a bench outside the dining area in the hallway leading to the pits. A few fans tried to blow a cool breeze in the hallway;it was hot but we still chowed down. The brisket was moist, with a deep pink ring of smoke, not as pronounced as Mueller’s and Franklin’s, but still it was very good. The ribs were on
the sweet side, which was surpris-ing, as I expected them to have a bit of kick to them. We liked it, but not like Franklin’s, which had spoiled us, setting the standard. Still, I could see why people swear by this place. It’s that good.
Driving a short distance, we circled under a railway overpass to Kreuz Market (619 N. Colorado St Lock-hart, TX 78644 / 512-398-2361 / www.kreuzmarket.com). Another BBQ place, same routine: get in line. The line moved a bit slower than Smitty’s but we made our way to the front in about thirty minutes. We did the same thing, half pound of brisket, half pound of ribs, same sides. Gotta say, we were a bit
disappointed in the brisket -- it was a little dry and a bit tough. Maybe it was just a subpar slab of brisket. Oh well. But the ribs! They were great! Peppery, with that perfect crunch on the ends. I loved them. On this trip, I ranked them second to Franklin’s. Then there were the beans. They were heavenly. I could have eaten a quart. If you go to Kreuz, order the ribs and beans. You will not be disappointed.
We ended our SXSW part of the trip by watching one more concert featuring one of my favorite bands from the 80s and 90s: The Cult. Hard to believe, but these guys are still going after it, and Ian Astbury did not disappoint, belting out song after song, even kicking some equipment off the stage for old time’s sake. Guitarist Billy Duffy can still wail on that guitar, hitting all the solos, note for note, just like I remembered. Ahh, Fire Woman, I Love the Rain, and She Sells Sanctuary never sounded better. Score: two BBQ restaurants, two bands, and a plate of late-night veggies after-wards. I know I’m gaining weight.
Sunday dawned as usual, cloudy and humid. This time, Nick and I stopped by my friend’s restaurant Hoover’s Cooking (2002 Manor Rd Austin, TX 78722 / 512-479-5006 / www.hooverscooking.com). It is mandatory that I stop in to see the Hoov. We go back thirty-five years and he is a very dear friend. His restaurant has taken home cooking to new levels and has been featured on national TV. Breakfast tacos and coffee were perfect and got us ready for the sprint home. We even bought homemade peach and blueberry cobbler to take home to my wife.

wondering where the heavy duty Porsche stuff is. Your pa-tience will now be rewarded.
After a short stretch on I-35, watching a couple of miles of stupidity, aka people heading north from SXSW, Spring Break and the usual weekend craziness, I decided to take to the back roads. Ahhh, finally it was time to let the CS’ legs stretch. We took RM 1431. Its two lanes snake along Lake Travis to Marble Falls. Falling in behind a BMW cycle, we hugged the turns, barely noticing the yellow caution road signs telling us to take the cor-ners at 35 mph. Yeah, right. The CS was born to take those roads; the more they twist and turn the better.
Its suspension geometry and ample brakes are up to the task. Deeply banked turns and extreme dips can come close to bottoming the car but are a blast to hit at speed. All too soon we came on a slow-moving SUV. Why is it always a slow-moving SUV, minivan or camper? A tiny passing zone ap-peared, and both the BMW cycle and the CS hit the throttle almost as one, shooting past the crawler. A Camaro had joined our group, but he didn’t hit the throttle fast enough to get past the crawler when we did, so he was left behind.
We sprinted until we got to Marble Falls, where the BMW went one
way and we went another, in order to gas up. We then turned north on Highway 281, which is blessedly four lanes and smooth for miles on end. We ended up getting in with a fast-moving bunch and averaged only a few miles over the posted 75mph speed limit. No really!
Finally the four lanes cut down to two and it was time to play the passing game. I must admit I am not the most patient person being stuck in line behind -- you guessed it -- a slow-moving SUV, minivan or camper. Problem is, stacked up behind the usual suspects were even more of the same, and they were not going to make the pass -- no way, no how. Fortunately the road has plenty of passing zones with long sight lines or cut-out lanes, so we did what we had to, taking sometimes five and six cars at a time. We easily put them in our rearview and streaked forward, no doubt as they shouted invectives our way . . . whatever. The radar detector gave us plenty of warning on those occasions when we went a wee bit over the posted speed limit.
Here, the great heart of the Cay-man S was in its element. Dropping down to fourth gear and burying the throttle, the flat six shouted that familiar Porsche roar as the car leapt forward, piling on the speed. It was the perfect car for this kind of cut-and-dice passing.
I am respectful of others on the road and will not wind it out to see what it will do; that’s what the track is for. But on these kinds of roads, what a great car to be in! Once we hit Interstate 20, I dialed in the cruise control and tuned to the local ESPN station to check the NCAA basketball scores as we headed home. When we arrived, I glanced down at the odometer. We had traveled about 740 miles and used less than two tanks of gas. Not bad for a little two-seater with plenty of power.
If you ever have the opportunity to drive to or from Austin, consider taking the roads less travelled. Both Highways 281 and 16 offer great roads, beautiful vistas, cool little towns, each featuring one or two BBQ spots, and less stress than the craziness that is Inter-state 35. It took us a little longer, but we had more fun on 281.

Oh, and do what the pros do: when visiting multiple BBQ joints, order two slices of brisket and two ribs and some sides -- no more! It simply doesn’t get any better than that, other than doing that tour in a Porsche.

The Department of Sunday Drives is reporting on the first Saturday Drive in almost three
years, when we drove out to Rancho Sereno in May 2011. This time we set out to the 38th Annual Germanfest in Muenster, TX. Tourmeister John Har-vey had organized what proved to be
the largest turnout so far for any of our Drives.
An unbelievable 91(!) cars and 150(!) participants gathered in Flower Mound, in beautiful, sunny Texas spring weather to get ready for a three-run-group, 70-mile adventure on nice twisty back roads north of the Metroplex towards Muenster. Go Mavericks!
Muenster is a unique, small (pop. 1600) German community in North Texas. It was founded in 1889 by German Catholic settlers along the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad. German was the main language and was spoken exclusively until the 1930s. The community remains closely tied to their heritage, as can be seen in the architecture and spirit of the town. They maintain
their own school district and hospital, and throw one of the biggest parties in Texas every year during the last weekend in April (mark your calendar).
This three-day festival attracts thousands to mouthwatering German Bratwurst, Schnitzel, Pretzels, Kraut, hearty cheeses and homemade breads, Apfel-strudel, cakes, and pies. Bavar-ian beer is on tap and can be had in a Masskrug. “Guten Ap-petit.”
Festivities on the fairgrounds included merry-go-rounds, ex-citing rides, Naegelschlagen, Ring-the-Bell, and lots of music
in a “Tanzhalle” and the “Texas Stage.” Other activi-ties included a 5k and 15k Germanfest Fun Run, and a Sausage-and-Rib Cook-Off.

The rest stop proved challenging with so many cars to park
Along the way, we witnessed the Metric Century Bicycle Rally, a 100km, 65km, or 35km bike run on the same beautiful, scenic, and rolling-hills Texas roads that our Tourmeister had picked for us.
The Fest had entertainment for the whole family, with mimes, magicians, clowns and storytellers, Karneval and Kinder Theater for the children.
The turnout was huge, and not only for our club. The little town was literally overrun with Party-goers from wide and far. The town had reserved a parking lot for us, which in hindsight would not have been large enough for all of our cars, but was also fully closed in by other vehicles and motorcycles when we got there around lunch time.
What a memorable outing! Muenster – we’ll be there again next year.

I just returned from Road Atlanta, where I received extensive train-ing on the Porsche 918 Spyder
-- including driving it! I will try to share my experience. My expectations
were high, but I had no idea. I can confidently say that your ownership experience will be like nothing you have ever experienced either. In short, the Porsche 918 Spyder is far greater than the sum of its parts!
Regarding the car and my experience learning and driving it: I know you have seen videos of the car, read the specs, seen the performance figures, and read about the advanced materials and tech-nologies used in its construction, but until you see it first hand, experiencing the build quality and driving dynamics, you cannot possibly under-stand how superior your Porsche 918 Spyder is!
The Porsche 918 Spyder features not just race-inspired, but race-derived components, such as the Dallara Automobili-sourced Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) monocoque chassis. The 298-lb 608 bhp 4.6-liter 90° V8 engine, based on that used in the RS Spyder LMP2 race car that was campaigned from 2005 through 2010, features a drop-forged 180° throw
flat-plane crankshaft, titanium connecting rods, and Formula 1-inspired “Inconel” top-pipes which route the exhaust up and out behind the passenger compart-ment. It is boosted by the most highly engineered and most technologically superior hybrid drive system ever developed, bringing your Porsche 918 Spyder’s power output to 887 bhp and 994 lb.-ft. of torque.
The high voltage lithium-ion battery is designed for maximum output and power absorption that pro-vides both unheard-of electric driving performance and amazing recuperation, allowing the Spyder to achieve maximum performance that far exceeded my expectations whether in E-Power or Race modes.
The suspension, drive train, electromechanical four wheel steering system, and the extremely fast-shifting (less than 50 milliseconds per shift) PDK transmis-sion made my ridiculously quick pit exit effortless in all-electric e-power mode. An attack of Road Atlanta’s Esses and our 177 mph cruise down the back straight blew my mind! All in a comfortable environment, fea-turing a configurable “Gorilla Glass” touch screen cen-ter console that provides heretofore never seen con-nectivity and intuitive operation. Lethal and civilized!
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a Hyper Super Sports Car that is not only race-inspired, but race-derived. Plus it delivers unimaginable performance in all conditions. Again, it is truly is more than the sum of its parts.

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Macans and Cup Cars and Panameras – Oh My!By Cliff Blackshear

looks once again to be a car/truck/sport ute/cross-over(?) that breaks new ground. I
dunno. Havin’ a hard time getting wound up about it, yet everyone I know that has seen and driven one comes away seriously impressed. Much like when the Cayenne was introduced. Or the Panamera.
Speaking of the Panamera: I was at COTA last weekend working tech inspection (basically weigh-ing 163 race cars in three days time from sun up to near sun
down) and watched a Panamera lead a group of Carrera Cup Cars down the hill after Turn 1 in the Enduro on Sunday.
In a drivers’ meeting it had been brought up by one of the Cup guys that the pace car was driving too slowly under yellow flag conditions, and this was creating a cooling sys-tem overheat situation for the cars’ engines. You have to understand this: these factory-built race cars have a cooling system specifically designed for high speed driving. As much as possible is left off of the cooling system to save weight, and everything is engineered around downforce and high speed cooling system efficiency, as well
as brake cooling air management. Take a look at the front of one of these cars and see how brake cooling and radiator flow is set up.
The answer that came back at the meeting was, “We are aware of this, and our pace car driver had been told that, when on the course with the Cup Cars, to drive as fast as is comfortable.”
So I’m standing on the walkover bridge at the bottom of the hill after Turn 1. The pace car was out under yellow flag conditions. The group had packed up and the Panamera led them down the front straight. I heard them com-ing and could see the tops of the

cars as they went up the hill into 1. Looked like they were carrying above average pace car speed.
I do not know what model Pana-mera was on the course leading the pack. It had to be at least a GTS if not a Turbo or Turbo S. Folks, that car exploded off Turn 1, heading into 2 at full cry, with the PDK rowing through the gears, and the Cups were NOT lazily weaving back and forth, trying to keep heat in the tires. I could not hear the Panamera but could hear the Cup Cars shifting pretty quickly to keep up. It was interesting. They flew into the S-curves and disap-peared after Turn 6. Fun to watch.
I know that the Macan has per-formance abilities with its size and an awesome power-to-weight ratio. Hummmmm. Sounds like
a pace vehicle that can also carry multiple people in comfort to me.
Meanwhile, at the shop, I returned from COTA and tried to catch up with goings on today. A diesel Cayenne had been addressed that
had a NOx sensor failure. It was interesting. A Panamera had come through with a bad fuel tank level measurement sensor. It was out of
fuel even though the fuel gauge was reading well over ¼ tank, yet when tank was opened up, both sensors were lying in correct posi-tion. After just raising and lowering both level measurement sensors by hand, they started reading correctly. Weird. No fuel level measurement issue in this model or NOx sensor failure in a diesel had been seen before in our shop.
The NOx sensor failure I forward-ed to front desk engineering. What I found interesting about it was that, with this component failure and subsequent recording of a sensor issue in fault memory of the fuel management system, a warning in the instrument cluster was displayed. It read “Adblu low” while displaying a check engine light. Hummmm.

So at this point, I have kind of gone over how to cover your “Special” Porsche – the
one that you aren’t driving every day. However, let’s say you aren’t
calling my office because your Porsche is your commuter car. That’s fine, but here are the first three things you should be looking at on your regular auto policy to make sure you are getting what you pay for, insurance wise.
1. Liability. This is the first cover-age on your declarations page, and I would argue, the most important. There are two different ways li-ability is sold in Texas: “Split limits” or “combined single limits.” If you have split limits, you have three numbers there: 100/300/100. These numbers mean the Bodily Injury per person/BI per accident/Property damage. If you have CSL coverage, you just have one number for everything. So there are the facts – but here is the good
advice. You need to max out those limits. 100/300/100 is a little low, but that is the minimum coverage you should have when driving a Porsche. You are a millionaire, right? Anyone who gets into an accident sure thinks so, and so will their lawyer. Too often I see people driving nice cars with the state minimum limits of liability. That’s silly, and asking for trouble in an accident. We live in a sue-happy society (hell, I’ll bet half of you reading this paid for your Porsches by billing hourly) and perception says nice car = money. Liability coverage is cheap, so load up.
2. Deductibles. This is generally the one that everyone focuses on, because this is the one that they will have to come up with out-of-

pocket if there is an accident. This coverage is all about what makes you comfortable – but do be aware that the highest deductible isn’t always the best value. Sometimes the difference between a $500 deductible and a $1000 deduct-ible is as little as $100 a year in premium. If that’s all you are saving, you are better off having the lower deductible. Also, be sure to ask about glass coverage. Quite often, glass is covered with a zero dollar deductible, but it may be an optional coverage, so be sure to ask.
3. Custom Parts. Even though your Porsche is a daily driver, that’s not to say you haven’t tweaked it a bit, so you can get to The Man-sion in time for happy hour on Tuesdays. Most daily policies will cover you for custom parts and
equipment if you ask. This is not as big a deal if you wreck the car (as they can see the parts you have put on) but it becomes very
important if your car is stolen. CPE coverage is pretty cheap, and will ensure that the money you spent on wheels isn’t lost forever if your
car ends up stolen and shipped to the Ukraine for use as some Russian mobster’s rainy day car.
We have lots more coverage to talk about, but these are the big three you need to be concerned with today. Too often I see people with nice cars that have a policy written by someone who is using the cookie cutter approach: everyone gets state minimum liability, $1000 deductibles, and have a nice day. I’m sure that when you bought your Porsche, you spent plenty of time on the website building just the right car. You should allow us to help you build your insurance policy the same way.
