Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Welcome back to all students, staff and parents! I hope that everyone had a
wonderful holiday and enjoyed the break from school routines. I would like to
extend a special welcome to our new families who have joined the CPS
community this term. We hope you enjoy being a part of our wonderful
school!
Term 2 Events!
Traditionally, Term 2 is always a very busy term with lots of extra-curricular
activities organised. We have the Athletics Carnival, District Cross Country,
NAPLAN, public speaking competitions, Grip Leadership, Cowra Eisteddfod,
PSSA knockouts, School Reports and NAIDOC Week, just to name a few!
Please ensure you keep up to date with all that is happening at school via the
weekly Newsletter, the school website and the Cowra Public School Facebook
page.
Staff Development Day
The staff had a very productive Staff Development Day on Monday this week
where we focused on our Positive Behaviour for Learning and Social Skills
Programs, fine-tuned our Semester 1 report writing procedures and finalised
classroom programs and activities ready for the term ahead.
Staffing for Term 2
We warmly welcome Miss Jayne Sharkey to Cowra Public School as the new
class teacher on Kindergarten Garru. Miss Sharkey had a chance to meet the
Garru students at the end of last term and has had a wonderful time teaching
and getting to know her new class this week. We also welcome Mrs Mel
Montgomery back from maternity leave. Mrs Montgomery will be teaching
Gilaa with Mrs Berry, and will be working on Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Sophie
Duke also returns to us this term as one of our many outstanding casual
teachers, and we are looking forward to seeing her smiling face around the
school. Miss Prue James has taken a transfer of duty for the remainder of the
year to Mulyan PS and we are currently in the process of filling her position in
the library. The staff are all very excited to be back and are looking forward to
a fantastic Term 2!
ANZAC Day
A huge thank you goes out to the large number of students and staff who
turned up to march at the Cowra ANZAC Service last Wednesday.
Congratulations to our school leaders; Lorissa Wood and Henry Fagan who did
a superb job laying the wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of Cowra Public
School. Our school was extremely well represented and all students
participated in the march with honour and respect. Our school ANZAC Day
Ceremony will be held tomorrow morning for all students and staff. Thank you
to Mrs Eldridge and Mr Vogel for their organisation of these special events.
Cowra Public School Leaders who took
part in the recent
Charlie & Ruby were the winner and
runner up in the Beyblade competition
held last term. Mr Murray organised
the competition.
Wedding Bells!
Congratulations to Miss Louise Sims, who was married in the school holidays! Miss Sims will now be known as
Mrs Hattenfels and we wish her and her husband Rob all the best in their married life. We also wish Miss
Olivia Ryan the very best for her wedding this coming weekend! Miss Ryan will return next Tuesday as Mrs
Galea and we congratulate her and Nathan on their special day!
Congratulations
Warm congratulations are extended to Mrs Deb Cobcroft, who recently received news of a successful
transfer to Orange. Deb is a much loved and respected staff member and our loss will certainly Orange
Public School’s gain. This transfer will take effect in January 2020 so fortunately for us; we get to keep Mrs
Cobcroft until the end of the year. We wish Deb all the very best with her move and know she will enjoy
being closer to her family.
Welcome to Jade Browne
This week we have enjoyed having Cowra High School Year 12 student, Jade Browne, complete her work
experience with us at Cowra Public School. Jade has experienced what it is like to work as a teacher
across all areas of the school and has demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm and initiative. We wish Jade
all the best with her HSC and hope that she pursues teaching as a career in the future!
PSSA Girls Cricket
Good luck to our Girls Cricket team who will compete against Mulyan PS in the first round of the PSSA
Knockout tomorrow. The game kicks off at 10am at Twigg Oval and parents are welcome to come along
and cheer our girls on. Cricketers will come to school as normal, and walk to Twigg Oval with Miss Dunk at
9:10am. A big thank you to Samantha Dunk for coaching and organising the team... go CPS!
NAPLAN Online
In Week 3 and 4 of this Term, students in Year 3 and 5 will sit the National Assessments in Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online.
Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our students in Year 3 and 5
have already participated in “practice” online tests to ensure they are familiar with the online format. To
see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site at
http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site. If you have any questions about
NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher. For more information please go to: https://
nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support. Thank you to Mrs Duncan, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Oborn for their
coordination of NAPLAN Online this year.
Winter Uniforms
Just a reminder to all families that this term sees the changeover to our winter uniform. Students are
required to wear full school uniform each day apart from Sport or PE Days. If you require new uniforms,
these are available from Mr Embroidery, Central West Uniforms or alternatively, the school has some
second-hand uniforms for sale in the clothing pool – please call in and see Lisa in the canteen. Please note
that school hats or beanies are a requirement of our school uniform all year round.
Girls Winter Uniform Option
This winter sees us offer an alternative option to the checked pinafore for girls. After consultation with
students, staff and the P&C, the alternative uniform consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, school jumper or
jacket and navy pants. The navy pants will be available from Mr Embroidery this Term and must be ordered
individually, with an approximate 48-hour turn around. Please see the updated uniform options and price
list attached to this week’s Newsletter.
Have a great week…
