We think THE OLD MARKET (or TOM for short) is the best place in Brighton & Hove to see a show. We aim to encourage the presentation and production of performance arts, by hand-picking shows (see TOM’S TAGS for our picks).

We often add new shows – keep an eye on THEOLDMARKET.COM and sign up to our newsletter to stay one-step ahead of the crowds.

TOM is owned and managed by two of the city’s most successful artists, the creators of international smash-hit show STOMP.

Hello,Our programmer has been working her socks off to bring you an amazing May here at TOM, and we think you’ll agree that this one’s going to be a real humdinger.

Fancy a little Bromance (p4 & 5)? Turn the page to see the boys who could “teach Isaac Newton a thing or two about gravity” (The Stage).

Acclaimed touring company Paines Plough bring their UK Garage-themed (yes, you read that correctly) With A Little Bit Of Luck (p9) for a night out at the theatre that will make you rave. Elsewhere, the Wardrobe Ensemble explore the awkward first sexual encounters of three couples in 1972: The Future Of Sex (p14).

Trygve Wakenshaw returns with his 5-star comedy world Kraken (p12 & 13), a hilarious show that’s hard to describe but must be seen. But why should adults have all the fun? James Campbell’s Comedy 4 Kids (p15) is top-notch stand up minus the naughty words.

There are too many fantastic events to mention here, so please keep reading. Trust us, it’s worth it. And if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to come to everything. Get more festival tickets with 15% off selected shows by joining our TOM’s Friends scheme. Find out more at theoldmarket.com/tomsfriends.

With a little bit of luck, we’ll see you soon. Happy festival!

Bromance – Noun (informal): A close but non-sexual relationship between men. Early 21st cent: blend of brother and romance.

Relationships are the heart of the stylish Bromance, where handshakes become handstands and backslaps become backflips. This tour-de-force of physical heroics wittily explores male friendship and its limits through parkour skills, B-boying, tricking, hand-to-hand acrobatics, Cyr wheel and more.

Set to a stunning soundtrack that ranges from Lee Fields, to Einaudi, Morricone to Tone Lōc, Bromance walks the line between pugnacious and poignant in a hilarious, jaw-dropping celebration of everything blokey.

Why you should see it

One of the UK’s hottest new circus ensembles, the boys have been wowing audiences of all ages the world over, winning a Total Theatre Award for their sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and the UK’s inaugural circus competition Circus Maximus in 2013.

This crowd-pleaser of a show is perfect for an outing with friends and family, and if you’re still not convinced, watch the trailer at theoldmarket.com. (See, we told you so!)

Bromance produced by DREAM with support from Underbelly Productions and the National Centre for Circus Arts as part of Circus Maximus.

Nick has fallen out of love with London and his life as a journalist. Forced to review the launch of Urbania, a new inner-city festival, he remembers his shattered friendship with Johnny Bevan, the whip-smart mercurial kid from an Essex council estate.

At University, Johnny set Nick’s world alight: saving him from living his father’s life and guiding his political awakening. Twenty years later as their youthful dreams disintegrate with the politics they’d hoped for, can Nick find Johnny in time to save him from himself?

A funny and poignant poetic monologue about the British relationship between class and politics told through one extraordinary friendship.

Join Gaulier-trained clown Trygve Wakenshaw as he returns for a beautifully strange and “blissfully funny hour of physical stream-of-consciousness” (Time Out).

Magnificently mad, rubber-limbed Trygve is his own animator in a cartoon world, taking the audience from fun with unicorns, to sword-swallowing, to snake charming, weight-lifting, beatboxing, self boxing, and the birth of a baby elephant. It’s a strange world with never-ending laughter and the occasional bit of audience participation.

Guileless and innocent – even at his most risqué, this is a physical comedian in a class of his own.

Why you should see itKraken has won awards and sold out at multiple festivals since it was first created in 2014, and continues to delight audiences around the globe.

WINNER: Best Comedy (Adelaide & Perth 2015); Underbelly Award (2014) and many more.

It’s 1972. An era of possibility, polyester and pubic hair.

Ziggy Stardust is on Top of the Pops, Penny is writing an essay on Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Christine is watching Deepthroat. Brian is confused.

The Wardrobe Ensemble tell the story of the class of ‘72 with a handsome funk guitarist and some spacehoppers. Was it easier back then? Where did we go wrong?

Come with us for a brisk romp through the ins and outs of those excellently awkward first sexual encounters.

Why you should see itWith its inventive theatricality, irreverent humour and spectacular ensemble moments, 1972: The Future of Sex won The Stage Award for Acting Excellence in 2015. Through the lens of the seventies, The Wardrobe Ensemble comment on our own attitudes towards sex in 2016.

In the 1970s, when working at Island Records, television composer Michael Burdett was asked to throw out some tapes. One of them caught his eye.

It was over 20 years later before Michael played the tape, and was astonished to hear an unknown version of one of Nick Drake’s greatest works.

Michael decided to share this recording in an extraordinary way, offering people across Britain the chance to hear the recording on headphones in exchange for photographing them. Join Michael as he shares what happened next.

Humorous and poignant, Strange Face celebrates life, coincidences and the legacy of singer-songwriter Nick Drake.
