MAYO MEDICAL LABORATORIES WORKSHOPS

February 6 to 10,1989 Problem-Oriented Case Studies in Surgical Pathology

Palm Springs, California Many surgical pathologic cases constitute a challenge not only in establishing a correct diagnosis but also in participating in decisions regarding treatment. This workshop, intended for practicing anatomic pathologists, is designed to provide the participants with first-hand experience with common, but difficult, diagnostic problems. In addition, experts will share their views on differential diagnosis and patient management.

The workshop will follow a case-presentation format. After a brief review of the pertinent history, the participants will have several minutes to study a representative slide microscopically. Discussion of the case and audience participation will follow. Participants are encouraged to bring their own microscope; however, a limited number of microscopes will be available.

Cases will be selected for their "message" value. Most will be relatively common problems of diagnosis and management, the types that are frequently encountered in an average laboratory of pathology. Cases will be chosen by the discussants and will represent diagnostic problems in pulmonary, head and neck, genitourinary, breast, gynecologic, and bone and soft tissue pathology. Program Director: Louis H. Weiland, M.D. February 27 to 28,1989 Laboratory Diagnosis of Parasitic Infections Jacksonville, Florida This workshop will discuss the fundamentals of diagnostic parasitology and describe recent developments in techniques. The importance of the proper collection and transportation of specimens and the selection of appropriate tests will be stressed. Quality control measures, including participation in surveys from the College of American Pathologists (or other organizations) and the effect of the newly proposed guidelines from the Health Care Finance Administration, will be discussed, as well as laboratory safety and infection precautions. The workshop will be devoted primarily, however, to the accurate and efficient detection and identification of parasites in stool, blood, and tissue specimens. Descriptions of commonly encountered arthropods and readily available serologie tests will also be presented. The program is appropriate for pathologists, microbiologists, medical technologists, and medical laboratory technicians who work in a clinical laboratory and have a special interest in parasitology. Program Director: Jon E. Rosenblatt, M.D. March 29 to 31,1989 Physician's Office Laboratory Workshop Rochester, Minnesota This 2V2-day program will review the basic principles and procedures used in physicians' office laboratories. Information will be presented on venipuncture, processing of specimens, urinalysis, hematology, coagulation, chemistry, microbiology, pregnancy testing, and identification of crystals in body fluids. Three special topics of the seminar will be (1) legislation that may affect office laboratories, (2) CPT coding for laboratory procedures, and (3) preparation for laboratory inspections. Other topics of interest

The workshop is suitable for personnel from clinical laboratories of any size who are involved in the recovery and identification of fungi in clinical specimens. Participants will receive instruction in the following areas: direct microscopic examination of clinical specimens for fungi; recognition of fungi in histopathologic sections; the serologie diagnosis of fungal infections; and identification of yeasts and yeastlike fungi, hyaline and dematiaceous saprobic molds, agents of chromoblastomycosis, mycetoma, and phaeohyphomyco-sis, dimorphic fungi, dermatophytes, and organisms tha t cause opportunistic fungal infections. A team-teaching approach will be used for lectures; technologists will conduct the laboratory workshops and will demonstrate and explain current methods. Printed materials will be provided for guidance in performing mycologie examina

tions in the participants' laboratories. Microscopes will be provided. Program Director: Glenn D. Roberts, Ph.D.
