SCOTTVILLE — For the second year in a row, veter-an coach Scott Briggs and his Mason County Central foot-ball Spartans will start the season with just 20 players.

One thing that Central will feature this season is a stronger than usual athleti-cism that will bolster its skill positions on offense and make its defense stronger.

Right now, however, Briggs is most concerned with rebuilding his of-fensive line which took a

hit from graduation and from some seniors who did not come out this fall. “How quickly the offensive line can come together will be a big key for us,” said Briggs, who enters his 17th season as the top Spartan. “We will not be able to ac-complish anything on of-fense if we can’t take care of business up front. From tackle to tackle, we have just one player who has varsity experience.”

Last season, the Spartans posted a 3-6 record and graduated linemen Doug Wyman, Jacob Graczyk and

Tristan Gerbers with Wyman now playing for Hillsdale College. Also gone via gradu-ation are running backs Josh Ritzema, Murphy O’Brien and Brad Renwick.

Despite losing those three running backs, Central should be in good shape at the skill positions.

“The skill positions will be a strength for us,” not-ed Briggs. “But we do have some newcomers to football who will have to grow in the game,”

At quarterback, junior Spencer Knizacky, 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, returns for his

second season as the starter.“Spencer is a very efficient

quarterback,” said his coach. At running back, senior

Caleb Wood, 5-foot-8, 140; junior Blake Bladzik, 6-foot-2, 185; sophomore Ryan Mount, 6-foot-3 170; soph-omore Cody Soberalski, 6-foot-0, 175; and junior Eric Quick, 5-foot-8, 165, should handle the ball-toting duties well.

Bladzik should also be a leader on defense from his linebacker position.

At wide receiver and tight end, the Spartans had a bevy of good targets. Tight

end will be covered by se-nior Sean Wells, 6-foot-2, 190; and senior Nate Strejcek, 6-foot-4, 190. At wide receiver, there will be three new athletic se-niors, 6-foot-2, 170-pound Coltyn Tyndall; 6-foot-1, 175-pound Drew Griffis, and 6-foot-1, 175-pound Sheldon Carey.

“We would definitely like to throw the ball more this season,” noted Briggs. “But we have to be able to protect the quarterback.”

On the offensive line, only juniors Chance Illes, 6-foot-1, 180, and Austin McDou-

gall, 6-foot-1, 185, have se-cured starting spots.

The other spots will be filled from a group that in-cludes sophomore Cesareo Puente, 5-foot-11, 280; soph-omore Dakota Kutchinski, 5-foot-11, 250; sophomore Evan Robison, 5-foot-11, 170; sophomore Cody Frey; 5-foot-10, 175 and senior Jon Wittlieff, 5-foot-11, 175.

“It will all come down to our offensive line,” reiterat-ed coach Briggs.

SCOTTVILLE — Ma-son County Central girls cross country team coach Ed Sanders will encounter something unusual this sea-son… a small turnout.

“We have eight girls. That is the smallest team I’ve had in my 15 years coaching here,” said Sanders. “I like to think of us as being small, but mighty.”

Although there are no se-niors on the roster, Sanders does have a trio of veteran

juniors and a pair of promis-ing underclassmen to build this team around.

Last season, the Central gals finished second in the West Michigan Conference. But the Spartans have lost four girls to graduation. One of their top runners, Lind-say Larsen is now running for Siena Heights College.

Pacing the Spartans on the running paths this fall should be juniors Leta Lars-en, Jordyn Sanders and Chloe Kimes.

“They are a nice 1-2-3 punch for us,” said Sanders.

“They have been putting in the miles this summer.”

Help is also expected from sophomore newcomer Pen-ny Petersen and freshman Olivia Kimes.

“Penny could surprise this year,” noted Sanders. “And Olivia is an athletic girl.”

Two other returnees are junior Nicole Johnson, Sa-vannah Keefer and Tirzah Wood.

SCOTTVILLE — For the past 14 years, Mason Coun-ty Central boys cross coun-try coach Ed Sanders has built a strong program with the help of some outstand-ing runners.

Last season, the Spartans finished second in the West Michigan Conference, sec-ond at the division-three re-gion and tenth at the state meet.

The Spartans’ Chase Bar-nett, then a senior, came

in second as an individual at the state meet and then-sophomore Zac Benham fin-ished third.

The Chase Barnett-led era is now over as Barnett is off running for the University of Michigan. But that would seem to open the way for the Zac Benham-led era to take full bloom.

“Zac has been running all summer. He is bigger and stronger,” said Sanders. “I feel he is even more driven to win this season. The run-ner that beat him and Chase at the state meet was a junior

last year, so he will be back.”Besides losing Barnett,

Central also lost another strong runner, Austin Per-soon to the graduation and he’s running at Muskegon Community College.

The Spartans received an-other blow when this year’s anticipated No. 2 runner, se-nior Drew Griffis, opted to play football.

“That was a big loss for us,” said Sanders. “We now have lost three of our top five run-ners from last season.”

In the conference, Sanders sees Hart as having the best chance to win the league title with Whitehall also being in the running.

“If we can find a strong number-five runner, we could be near the top, too,” said Sanders.

“Our state regional will be tough,” added Sanders. “We have Hart, Manistee and Ben-zie Central running in our region.”

On the 11-man team this fall, the Spartans will look for junior Mitch Lange, junior Nolan Asiala and sophomore Jacob Shoop to make significant contributions.

“These guys see how hard Zac works,” noted Sanders. “And they are working to make this team stronger.”

Others that could lend a hand include senior Noah Genson, junior Cody Cooper and junior Lo-gan Merrick.

“We have talked as a team and we know we can not worry about who is not here,” said Sanders. “We have to get ourselves ready to run our best.”

SCOTTVILLE — As the Ma-son County Central volley-ball team looks to fight its way back to the .500 mark this season, it has two obsta-

cles to overcome. For starters, the Spartans

will field a young team. Sec-ondly, it will be a team that has, as coach Mary Scheffler says, “no super-tall girls.”

“We will definitely be young this season,” noted Scheffler,

who begins her fourth season as the Spartans head coach. “We have just five returning players. Two of those are se-niors and three are juniors. Many of our girls lack expe-rience, but they want to be good and are working hard.”

Last season, Central post-ed a 14-28-9 record and have lost all-West Michigan Conference player Madison Geers to graduation.

“She will be tough to re-place,” said Scheffler.

Also gone via graduation

are solid players Ashley Pyke and Abby Mavis.

Leading the Spartans this fall should be 5-foot-5, senior setter Abbie Berringer, an all-conference honorable men-tion, along with junior outside hitters Kylie Mount, 5-foot-9

and Dria Striker, 5-foot-9.Other help should come

from 5-foot-7, junior setter Rylee Tyndall and 5-foot-4, senior backline player Sarah Winey.

SCOTTVILLE — After los-ing six starters including their top scorer from last year’s 9-10 team, Mason County Central boys soccer coach Scott Scheffler and his team will be faced with a re-building season this fall.

That situation has Schef-fler emphasizing one over-riding message to his troops.

“The biggest thing I am looking for is a solid effort

from every player each and every game,” said Scheffler. “The win-loss record will be secondary to giving our best effort.”

“I know we will be able to put 10 solid players on the field,” added Scheffler. “But we will not have the depth we’ve had in the past.”

Lost to graduation are Bai-ly Merrick, an all-conference selection, along with starters Anders Asiala, Brian Erndte-man, Brayden Ahlfeld and Alex VanNoller.

Expected to pace the Spar-tans on the pitch this fall are seniors John Trivisonno, a midfielder; Austin Krusin-ski, a forward; and Jordan Steiger, a mid-defender, along with junior goalkeeper Boone Alway.

Trivisonno and Krusinski should be Central’s top scor-ing options. Alway, mean-while, is in his third season as the Spartans’ starting goalie.

The Spartans also have lost senior defender Coltyn Tyndall, who opted to play

football this fall.“Losing Coltyn leaves a big

hole to fill in our defense,” noted Scheffler.

Central now is hoping to get help from senior new-comers Tyler Cook and Johnny Shafer on defense.

Junior midfielder-backup goalkeeper Trevor Carrier, should also help out.

“Our sophomore class is our biggest group and we will rely on them again this year,” added Scheffler. “They were thrown into the action

a lot last season.”The sophomores play-

ing the most important roles will be defenders Ty-ler Marek and Connor Wil-lick along with forward Cody Newman.

“Hopefully, we will be able to use Tyler and Connor on offense some also,” said the Spartans coach. “They have offensive skills.”

“Our first four games this fall, Whitehall, Montague, Traverse Christian and Hart, will be tough,” noted Schef-

fler. “After that, we should get better with experience.”

The Spartans have a team of 19 players.

HART — “Hart has never won a West Michigan Con-ference title in girls cross country,” said 16-year head coach Terry Tatro recent-ly. “But this year is the best chance we have had since I’ve been here.”

After finishing third in the conference last fall and then qualifying for the MHSAA Division 3 state meet, the Pi-rates have lost just one run-

ner to graduation, Sabrina Smith.

With a total team member-ship of 19 athletes, the Pirates will be lead by senior star Jennie Gottardo along with highly regarded youngsters, sophomore Sierra Albus and freshman Alayna Ackley.

Right behind that trio should be two more strong runnners, senior Maddie Hodges and sophomore Ali Altland.

HART — Under veteran coach Terry Tatro, the Hart Pirates boys cross country team grabbed third place last season in the West Mich-igan Conference.

The going may be a bit tougher this fall after grad-uating three strong seniors, Travess Smith, Jon Vander-stelt and Thomas Stoneman.

The Pirates will return six veteran runners, but only three are upperclassmen. Coach Tatro will also greet seven newcomers to the squad.

“We have 13 team mem-bers,” said Tatro. “We will probably not challenge for the league title, but we should fare pretty well.”

Pacing the Pirates on the trails this fall should be se-

nior returnee Juan Lugo, se-nior newcomer Ryan Scott, junior returnee Devin Whit-ney and junior returnee Jo-nah Gale.

The Pirates also could get help from junior newcomers Austin Boundy and Braxton Platt.

Scheffler has brought up two sophomores who could help along the front line. They are 5-foot-8 Hunter Wiese and 5-foot-9 Jolene Weier.

Junior backline players Jacy Larson, 5-foot-3; Dan-ielle Gerbers, 5-foot-2 and Devin Battenfield, 5-foot-6, will be looked to give Cen-tral toughness on defense.

The Spartans could also receive a significant boost from Chilean foreign ex-change student Javi Zamo-rano Estana.

“She will not arrive un-til Aug. 20,” said Scheffler. “But she is a 5-foot-9 mid-dle hitter. She could be a big help.”

“Right now, I am still looking to name our libe-ro,” said the Spartan coach recently. “I have four back-

line players in mind.”The 2014 Mason County

Scheffler tabs Montague and Whitehall as the teams to beat in the conference ti-tle chase.

“Also, Shelby should be decent and Hart should be better,” noted the Spartan leader. “The league could be pretty balanced this sea-son.”

Scheffler will not have an assistant coach this fall.

Scheffler sees Whitehall and North Muskegon as the

two top teams to beat in the league this season.

“Whitehall won last year and they are reloading,” said Scheffler. “North Mus-kegon was second in the league and they do not have the numbers that Whitehall has, but they have some quality returnees.”

Scheffler also tabbed Shelby and Hart as dark-horses in the league title race this fall.

“Our top four or five should be pretty clear,” said Tatro. “But we also have a bunch fighting for the sixth and seventh spots.”

Those include senior Jen-

ny Herrygers, senior new-comer Norma Gonzalez, ju-nior Kassidy Baum, junior Kayleigh Gordon and fresh-man Cassidy Owens.

“We should have a pretty good team,” noted Tatro.

HART — The successful Hart Pirates boys soccer pro-gram will have a new coach this fall. Wilmer Barrera, a native of Honduras and a former professional player will take over for Frank Za-rate, who spent three season leading the Pirates.

“I am happy to have such good kids to work with,” said Barrera, who last coached at Overland High School in Au-rora, Colo. “And I am very happy with the number of players that have turned out.”

The Pirates have 30 boys out for soccer this fall. The varsity will have 16 players and the newly-formed junior varsity will have 14.

The varsity roster will con-sist of three seniors, four ju-niors, five sophomores and four freshmen.

Barrera inherits a squad that has lost five strong play-ers to graduation. Those are Nick Rombach, goalkeeper Beto Moul, Boni Hernandez, Derrek Broaddus and Anto-nio Herrera.

Leading the Pirates this season should be senior re-turnees Isiah Rodriguez, a forward, and Jacob Guevara, a defenseman as well as ju-nior returnees Samuel Her-nandez, a midfielder; Matt VanderWall, a defenseman; and Dylan VanderZwaag, an-other defenseman.

Sophomore midfielder Fa-her Mendez and freshman goalkeeper Damian Gonza-

lez both should play impor-tant roles.

“I know we have a lot of work ahead of us in order to get better,” said Barrera. “That is what it is all about.”

HART — After going 3-35-4 last season, third-year coach Chris Bosse and his Hart Pirates volleyball team have their sights set on moving up in the West Michigan Conference this fall.

“I am excited about this team,” said Bosse. “I think a good goal for us this year

is to finish in the top four in the league.”

From last year’s squad the Pirates have lost four play-ers to graduation. Most no-tably, Hart has lost reserve Natalie Switaj.

Bosse has seven returnees and a good number of them have good height.

Spearheading the Pirates’ efforts on the court this sea-son should be senior outside hitter Anna Hertzler, 5-foot-

9, who was an all-conference honorable mention last year; senior middle hitter Anna Drenth, 5-foot-9; and junior outside hitter Baylee Draper, 6-foot.

Also returning are juniors Jessica Riggs, a 5-foot-4 set-ter; Haley Mast, a 5-foot-7 middle hitter; Isabel Vela, a 5-foot-4 defensive special-ist, who is the front-runner to be the team libero; and Madison Hegedus, a 5-foot-

10 middle hitter.Newcomers to the varsi-

ty are junior outside hitter Haleigh Schaner, 5-foot-7 and the team’s strongest server; junior middle hit-ter Teri Carlson, 5-foot-7; and sophomore setter-out-side hitter Aubrey Hertzler, 5-foot-8.

“I really feel all 10 of our players will play on any giv-en day,” said Bosse. “We will need them all to be

ready.”“I am still experimenting

to find our top setters,” add-ed the Hart coach. “The girls will have to be flexible this season and learn some dif-ferent positions.”

Assisting Bosse with the varsity once again will be Brett Beachum. Priscilla Snider will coach the junior varsity team.

“Whitehall and then Mon-tague, those should be the toughest teams in the league this year,” said Bosse.

HART — The number of players out for football is a concern once again at Hart High School. But the desire of those athletes is not a problem.

“We only have 16 players on the varsity,” said fifth-year head coach Steve Hlady. “But the greatest thing we have is the level of commit-ment to football that these

guys show.”Last season the Pirates, with

19 players on the roster, went 0-9. From that team, Hart has graduated six players. Those that will be missed most in-clude running back Brandon Amstutz, quarterback Joe Fillips and two-way lineman Carl Morgan.

This fall, the Pirates have 14 seniors, one junior and one sophomore on the team. “Yes, it is good that we have so many seniors. They are

more mature,” said Hlady. “However, five of those se-niors are newcomers this season.”

“Truthfully, we will rely a lot on our one junior and our one sophomore,” added Hlady.

That one junior is Brett Bonstell, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound quarterback. And the one sophomore is Brady Tate, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound running back.

“We will ask them to do a

lot,” said Hlady.Veteran seniors that will

need to help out include tight end-linebacker Matt Wilson, 6-foot-2, 180; tight end-linebacker Freddy Oli-veros, 5-foot-11, 185; and guard-linebacker Daniel Far-ias, 5-foot-8, 175.

Other returning seniors are fullback Ty Davis, tack-le Jaxon Riley, center Ruben Jaramillo, halfback Norberto Ramirez, tackle Scott Pan-kow and guard Nick Curtis.

“We will look to be more diversified on offense this year,” said Hlady. “We will have some new formations and some new wrinkles.”

The 2014 Hart Pirates football team roster:

SeniorS: Gilberto Colon, Nick Curtis, Ty Davis, Daniel Farias, Rusty Gleason, Travis Hall, Ru-ben Jaramillo, Aaron McGhan, Freddy Oliveros, Scott Pankow, Norberto Ramirez, Jaxon Riley, Jordan Self, Matt Wilson.

Junior: Brett Bonstell.Sophomore: Brady Tate.

Assisting Hlady with the varsity again this season will be Brad Francis and Dan Pineda. The junior varsity, which currently has 18 play-ers, will be led by head coach Pat Ferrer and assistant Mark Riley.

Hlady tabs Ravenna and Muskegon Oakridge as the two teams with the best chance to win the league title.
