Texas Association for Literacy Education (TALE) National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Oklahoma Council of Teachers of English (OCTE) International Literacy Association (ILA) Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Key Women Educators (DKG) Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Network for Public Education International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) EFFECTIVE TEACHING: In my first semester at Southeastern, I collaborated with a senior faculty member to develop the annotated bibliography as the portfolio project for ELED 5663, Older Struggling Readers and English Language Learners, which included writing the rubric to meet all required standards. Subsequently, I redesigned ELED 5643, Literacy Materials and Environments, in order to adapt it from a face-to-face method of delivery to a blended method of delivery. In 2011, I introduced tablet computers into the section of ELED 4444, Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties at the Elementary Level that I was teaching, for the purpose of using them to tutor struggling readers. Research conducted as part of this endeavor suggested that teacher candidates needed more exposure to tablets, so measures were taken to introduce the activities using tablets in ELED 3423, Teaching Reading in the Elementary School I, and ELED 3433, Teaching Reading in the Elementary School II, during the Spring 2012 semester. This initiative continued with graduate courses during the Summer 2012 semester, again in ELED 4444 for the Fall 2012 semester, and during Summer 2013. Ultimately, I was impressed to introduce the concepts of the TPACK and SAMR frameworks for technology integration into all coursework in a very hands-on manner. In 2013 I designed a website for ELED graduates and pre-service teachers to use as a resource and online learning community. In the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014, I had the opportunity to teach face-to-face and IETV classes simultaneously; this required some rethinking and adjustments to give students at the distance sites the same rich classroom experiences as those in the face-to-face environment; reports of students indicate this was a fairly successful endeavor. I have on several occasions organized a group of students to attend the Annual Bill Martin Jr Memorial Symposium, a one-day conference for teacher professional development held on the campus of Texas A&M – Commerce in Commerce, TX. During the 2018 spring and summer semesters, I piloted a blended format for three ELED courses, 3223, 4513, and 4533, using ZOOM technology with 4533. I was nominated for an Excellence in Teaching Award for Southeastern in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2018, and 2019. As a public-school teacher, I twice received the Forney Middle School Teacher of the Year Award. Courses Taught ELED 2213 – Foundations of Literacy ELED 3223 – Social Studies in the Elementary School (traditional and blended)
