Historical Note: This feast commemorates the first six ecumenical Councils. The seventh, Nicea II, is

commemorated on the Sunday of October 11-17. Today's feast was originally the commemoration of the Council of

Chalcedon (451), which was observed on either July 11 or 16, according to the ancient manuscripts. On the present

calendar, July 11 is the feast of St. Euphemia, who, by legend, has a posthumous miraculous role in the results of

this Council. (She is also remembered on September 16.) Since July 16 was also the commemoration of another

ecumenical council (Constantinople II, 536/553), this date attracted the memory of all the other councils, except that

of Nicea II because of its importance in the Iconoclast controversy. This feast was then assigned to the Sunday

nearest to July 16. The original dates of the commemorations of the other councils are: Constantinople I, 381 -

August 3; Ephesus, 431 - September 9; Constantinople III, 680 - September 15 or 18. For Nicea I refer to its

primary commemoration. (This year on May 23.)

TYPIKON FOR AUGUST

Dormition Fast The traditional rule for the Dormition Fast is a strict abstinence from August 1 to 14, with the usual mitigations(wine

and oil) for Saturday and Sunday and the Feast of the Transfiguration (August 6). It is, therefore, observed as the

Great Fast. The Ruthenian Metropolia has identified this period as a penitential season (Canon 880, § 2). The

observance of this fast is voluntary. In some parishes, the Paraklis to the Theotokos is sung frequently during this

Fast.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 1

Mother Solomone and the Elder Eleazar. FM 411-417; MM 14; AUG 1-31; JK AUG 5-22; STSP 1990, 253-255.

Red vestments are worn for all services today.

Cross (September 14). At the Praises, 3 stichera of the Cross; 3 of the Martyrs, Glory, of the Martyrs; Now and

ever, of the Cross. The Great Doxology follows, and then the Veneration of the Cross and the Lesser Blessing of

Water.

Veneration of the Cross: At the end of Vespers, the Cross is put in the place of the Gospel Book, which then is

stood before the artophorion (tabernacle) as at the Divine Liturgy. A candle is placed on each side of the Cross.

During the Trisagion of the Great Doxology at Matins, the Cross is incensed from the four sides of the Holy Table.

At the end of the Great Doxology, during the Trisagion, the priest incenses the Cross on the Holy Table three times.

Then, taking the Cross and holding it towards the people, he processes around the Holy Table, leaves the sanctuary

through the Northern Door and stands in front of the Royal Doors. [The deacon precedes, incensing.] At the

conclusion of the Trisagion, the priest [or deacon] intones, "Wisdom! Be attentive!" The troparion of the Cross,

"Save Your people..." is sung three times and the priest processes to the tetrapod, places the cross on it, and incenses

it about the tetrapod three times. Then, "We bow to Your cross..." is sung three times and all venerate the Cross.

Small Blessing of Water: After the Veneration of the Cross, water is blessed. Water and a hand cross should be

present on the tetrapod. Traditionally, sprigs of basil are tied to the hand cross, but are not necessary. The order of

psalms and Troparia may be found in MM 14, in Hapgood's Service Book, pp. 470-478, and, in shortened form, in

other Euchologia. After the psalms and troparia, the following is read: Hebrews 2:11-18 and John 5:1-4 (verse 4 is

omitted in NAB and other modern translations). Then, the Litany of Peace with special petitions, and the Prayer for

the Blessing of Water and the Prayer of the Bowing of Heads. The water is then blessed by immersing the Cross

into the water, making with it the sign of the Cross. This is done three times, and at each immersion, the Troparion,

"Save your people..." is sung. The Church is then blessed with the water, and the Litany of Supplication (Suhubaja

Ektenija) is said, and the dismissal.

Historical note: Water was formerly blessed frequently, usually on the first day of the month. The blessing for

August 1 is the only one retained in the Typikon. The water blessed on these occasions was not kept, unlike the

Theophany water.

Divine Liturgy: Prokeimenon, Resurrection tone 6, with its verse, then the Prokeimenon, Common 10, without its

verse. Alleluia, Tone 4, the two verses of Common 2 and the 1st verse of Common 10. Communion Hymn:

Katavasiai: Canon of the Exaltation of the Cross.

Divine Liturgy: DL 346-350.

Epistle, 2 Peter 1:10-19; Gospel, Matthew 17:1-9.

Ambon Prayer 61: “Master Jesus Christ our God, lead us upon the all-holy mountain....” This prayer may be read

until the Leave-taking (Otdanije) of the Feast (August 13).

Dismissal: “May Christ our true God, who was transfigured in glory on Mount Tabor in the presence of his holy

disciples and apostles ....” This dismissal is said until the Leave-taking (Otdanije) of the Feast.

After the Ambon Prayer of the Liturgy, fruit (especially apples and grapes) are blessed. The fruits are incensed as

the Troparion and Kontakion of the feast are sung. Then these prayers are said: "O God our Savior, who was

pleased to call Your only-begotten Son..." (MMFM 503); "Lord Jesus Christ, God of God, who said to Your

disciples..." (Hamtramck Euchologion, 298); then the blessing of the fruit with Jordan water, and then the prayer, "O

Master, Lord our God, who have commanded..." (Hamtramck Euchologion 300 and Hapgood, 262) is said. If only

one book is to be followed, then the order in the Hamtramck Euchologion is best pastorally.

Note that in the sources there is a healthy variety of orders given for this blessing. The most ancient and

authentic is that found in MMFM 502-503. The prayer from the Greek order is the most traditional (blessing of

grapes). The Roman Malyj Trebnik contains only the prayer for those who bring first fruits (third prayer of the order

above, pp. 500-501). The Zhovka Trebnik contains a fuller service with Psalm 66[67], the Troparion and Kontakion

of the Feast, a Prayer for the Gathering of the Fruits of the Vineyard and three prayers for the blessing of these

fruits. The Hamtramck Euchologion, 298-300, follows this order in a shortened form, omitting the psalm and giving

two alternate prayers for the blessing of fruit (the first a translation of the second prayer of blessing in the Zhovka

Trebnik); a prayer for the blessing of grapes, also found in Hapgood, 261, and which comes from the Greek

tradition; and a prayer for the blessing of those who offer first fruits (found in the Roman Trebnik but not in

Zhovka). MMFM 503 gives yet another prayer from the Slav tradition (503) and Hapgood's Service Book 261-262

Blessing of Flowers: Following the Ambon Prayer of the Liturgy, the flowers are incensed as the Troparion

(Kontakion optional) is sung, then either the prayer for the blessing of plants ("O almighty, eternal God, by Your

word alone...", Hamtramck Euchologion, p. 301) or the prayer for the blessing of flowers, "O almighty Lord, God,

Creator of the universe..." is said, and then the plants are blessed with the sprinkling of the Jordan Water.

The historical origin of this custom seems to have been the blessing of the first fruits of olives by the

Patriarch of Constantinople. DeMeester (Benedizionale Bizantino, 504) notes that in its present form it has many

borrowings from the Roman tradition. The Slav texts title it a "Blessing of Herbs," and the intention of the prayer

seems to be the blessing of herbs that were used for medicinal purposes in the summer heat which was conducive to

many infectious diseases. In more recent times, the tradition concerning the death of the Theotokos that flowers

were discovered in her tomb after her body was taken into heaven has influenced this office and made it a blessing

of flowers.

The Zhovka Trebnik gives the most complete order: Psalm 64[65], the Troparion and Kontakion of

Dormition as the plants are incensed, two prayers of blessing (the first translated in the Hamtramck Euchologion,

301) and a prayer of the bowing of heads. The Roman Trebnik gives only two prayers of blessing. After the prayer

of the Bowing of heads the flowers and plants are blessed with Jordan Water. In some trebniks there is also a third

prayer of blessing specifically for flowers.

The various traditions concerning the death and assumption of Mary are found in two apocryphal works:

the "Assumption of Mary" (Transitus Mariae) written at the beginning of the fifth century and the "Dormition of

Mary," written by John of Thessalonica (d. about 630).

Akathist: An Akathist to the Dormition of the Theotokos may be found in the Book of Akathists (Jordanville, NY:

Holy Trinity Monastery, 1994), 135-156. Another translation has been published privately. An Akathist to the

Dormition of the Theotokos was also published by JK 487.
