IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,

DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS

OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

When researching into digipaks and music videos I did a number of ancillary tasks which helped in my production, such as analysing current videos and digipaks and all the factors that contribute to make it successful. To make my music video successful, we followed some of Goodwin's theory of what makes a good music video. One of the elements that I followed for our music video and that Goodwin states, is the link between visuals and lyrics. When creating and doing interviews about ideas for our treatment and music video we knew we wanted create a strong video on the name of our song and repetitive word throughout the song ‘Kamikaze’. When my group proposed the ides of having a rebelling party animal to the interviewers and the lead to an overdose at the end understood that she was the Kamikaze and that the overdose is the symbolic meaning for the explosion of a kamikaze. Once our group had almost finished filming, our constructive criticism was that we should escalate the video more, to either a consequence or there needs to be a reflection making it more of a narrative story, rather than just a receptive, partying music video. From this we re filmed some scenes so it would escalate more. From this this just reinstalled the link between visuals and lyrics. My group and I did this through, excessive drinking, taking different drugs, vomiting and a noose bleed. The reckless characters attributes leads to potentially self-destructive which you visually see at the end of the video when our main character shuts her eyes.

Another aspects of the video we included is the idea of intertextuality, our music video was massively influenced from TV show ‘Skins’ and their plot of troubled teens, rebelling against their parents and young in love. Below are some still shots we took from the programe that we took inspiration from and our own interpretation of portraying a free in love yet rebellious teen.

From this inspiration of ‘Skins’ and most pop music videos, we added an aspects of voyeurism, with kissing clearly conveying a relationship in our video. The use of an overlaying effect in our music video allowed us to create a sense of displacement inspired fro the ‘Skins’ tipsy character shown.

Our video plot was inspired by a TV show, yet some aspects such as the filming, costume and movement in the video was influenced by musicians music video ‘Wild Things’ by Alessia Cara. One example is displayed below where the use of lower camera angle and character moving towards the camera when filming gave it a nice aesthetic and tallowed us to create different variation of frames we used.

The use of looking at pre existing music videos, easily accessible due to new technologies such as YouTube allowed my group to gain a good understanding of what codes and conventions to include. This also allowed us to merge our own ideas with current video fames we had taken inspiration from elsewhere.

For my music video I will make sure to include as many as possible elements Goodwin says in his theory. This is because I want my music video to be as successful as possible and to make sure that my genre/ style of my music video to comes across as clearly as possible.

Goodwin's theory of music video state that all music videos should contain either some or all these elements;1. Have a link between visuals and lyrics (compliment, contradict or amplify)2. Have a link between visuals and music (compliment or contradict or amplify)3. Have a certain genre characteristics4. Intertextuality 5. Contain notions if looking 6. Voyeurism 7. Include demands of the record label 8. Whether the video is performance, narrative or concept based

The use of costume allowed us to portray a male gaze, this links to voyeurism and allowed my group to widen our target audience for males; the use of sexual nature of a relationship and costume of fishnet tights, showing the characters legs adds a sex appeal to men. The sex appeal of our character meant that not only will men watch it for the characters beauty but females will follow her outfit trend and if they find the character to be her pretty. This captivating character and choice of costume and make up, builds up the fan base making girls want to be her which intertwines with the album as people will buy it to follow the the artists career. The use of boots and a hoodie creates the characters aesthetic of rebellion, making her appeal to females through the appeal of letting loose and being an independent girl.

In terms of my Digipak and album advert, ancillary tasks such as analysing digipaks and an album advert allowed me to look a a vast range of different Albums and Album adverts. This meant I had always gained inspiration and kept in mind the type of overall aesthetic I wanted to create for my own digipak and album advert, as well as getting familiar with all the codes and conventions that were imperative to creating my final product. To create aa cohesive product I linked some of my music video frames to the digipak yet with more flare and creative through the use of bright colours. I made sure throughout creating my digipak and album advert that I had the same fonts and colours, this was a trend when look into into current albums as well as ensuring the product is linked.
