In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products? Music video

Representation of the artist

When representing the artist we had the image of a live performance for the high rhythmic points in the song, our main aim in producing the package is to represent the artist in the eyes of the audience. Our school of thought was we already new The Great Escape played a lot of gigs and therefore wanted to represent them in the video through a live performance.

Links between visuals and track.

In this screenshot you can see the actor putting his hands up as if to say ‘I give up’. We analysed Goodwin's theory and identified that we should make our product have a concurrent link between the track and the visuals. This links the visuals and the track as the song at this point represents a person giving up and the visuals represents the character giving up as he can not find the girl he is pursuing. This point in the video shows a successful link between the Visuals and the verbal as it is most present and recognisable at the time.

Setting/location

In our research Buskers we identified that it usually takes place in a town centre or a village, against the backdrop of an old style building on a busy street. One of the narratives the story stars a Busker, the setting allows us to represent the typical ideology of a busker to the audience and allows the narrative to be realistic and believable.

Costumes and props When choosing costumes and props we were able to target the audience effectively by dressing the actor in skinny jeans and a smart Barbour jacket, this represents him as an indie style person and fits in with our target audience. Also the black and white represents the band as retro indie . De-saturating the colours links with the greyscale used in the ancillary tasks. I think we were successful in portraying the character as a typical busker as the props we used allowed us to follow the semantic field of a busker: the hat for money to be dropped in and the acoustic guitar , allowing the audience to identify the busker and the town scene.

Page 7: Media evaluation 1

CameraworkOur main aim in producing the media package was to advertise the band, we opted to filter in live performance clips of the band parallel to the narrative of the busker. The close ups we used to picture the lead singer lip syncing the lyrics represents the band image and the close ups makes the singers face more recognisable to the audience and puts a face to the image of the band, this will make the band more recognisable and therefore meat the advertising goals to sell the band.

Musical genre and how the video suggests it.

In our research of the Indie genre we identified a

mood board and a certain specification of what style

clothing and interests an indie character would

posses, We then incorporated this when choosing

the mise en scene in the video, we started of with

dressing the busker in tight jeans and a smart

Jacket, this automatically follows the research and

the conventions of an indie character, also the

props of an acoustic guitar, this piece of musical

equipment is evident in the indie music, we made

the choice of the guitar to follow certain parts of the

indie track to show they interrelate and suggest this

is the style of the video.

Page 9: Media evaluation 1

Editing We used quick cuts to swap between

the two narratives at specific points in the track, for example when the song kicks in to a fast past pace with a deep beat we switch to the live performance for an extra effect. Also the cuts from shots allow us to portray the character looking for the girl and discovering her messages she is leaving behind, this works well as it identifies each part of the narrative in the correct sequence we desired and gives the Video structure. This follows the conventions of a typical music video as it always has cuts between scenes, you will never see a successful music video that is just one long scene.

Representation of the artist The band play a lot of gigs and concerts. In our research we

identified that Visuals are key to the production, this Includes images of the artist/band, shots from concerts and instruments. We chose to follow these conventions but put a twist on them and portray the image in a black and white format to follow the theme we have created throughout the package, also the black and white images represents the indie style we were aiming for as it is associated with indie music.

Page 12: Media evaluation 1

Mise en scene of images

The images we choose where specific to our band as it was mainly of them performing, We used many close ups and mid shots to include the instruments and the type of clothing but also didn't go to far away so their face was the main feature in the image and the most recognisable point. Many album covers have the same traits as it is mainly to represent the band and make their image iconic and I think the Mise en scene of the images does this for our digipack.

Page 13: Media evaluation 1

Costumes and props As the Band are all indie

characters and the target audience for the Album is Indie fans we choose the costumes to follow the convention of the way the indie characters a stereotyped, this include skinny jeans, smart Jackets and Symbolic tops. This follows the conventions of a real media product for example The Darkness target rockers and they where clothing when performing that would be associated with the rock genre

Page 14: Media evaluation 1

Use of font and style Our aim was like any other Production

company representing a band. This was to represent the artist name, image of the band and the title of the album so it is easily identified and recognised. We used the Same Font through out the Digipack to create a link between the two products. This assured us that when the album was released it would be related to the poster and worked well to create brand identity.

Page 15: Media evaluation 1

Written content We choose to follow the

typical conventions of an magazine advert and a Album cover. For the Magazine advert we included ratings from a established Magazines which are always prevalent on a magazine music advertisement.

Page 16: Media evaluation 1

Music genre and how your advert suggests it.

The music magazine is symbolic of a live performance, this centre image relates to the indie genre and the sophisticated simple font interrelates to create the music genre desired. This works well is a Represents the band in a positive way.

Music genre and how your digipak suggests it.

The black and white theme and the use of the costume the Band are wearing on the front cover and each individual picture combines well to represent the indie genre we were targeting. Also images of the instruments the band is using suggests

Page 18: Media evaluation 1

Layout The layout uses the masthead at the top of each

package and has the main image of the band member in the centre as the main focus, this is the typical conventions, also on the back cover of the album their is a bar code and the logo of the album producers, alongside copyright laws, these are evident on most albums, this creates a professional

look for the package.

Page 19: Media evaluation 1

Special effects We identified that when a real media producer produces a

digipack they have a running theme through out to link the products. So we decided to have a black a white theme through out the promotional package. This special effect of de saturating the images and making them into the theme of Black and white allowed us to create this uniqueness through out, but also it allowed us to relate to the indie genre as a black and white theme is starting to become a prevalent convention in the indie genre.
