Evaluation Activity #3

Stephen LambWhat kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Paramount pictures- why would they release our film?

• Paramount Pictures is a very successful production company that has produced lots of films including many of the latest and highly popular films like Interstellar, Mission impossible Ghost protocol and also one of my favourite thriller film Shutter island

• I think that they would release our film, Recollection, because we think that it is a very interesting, yet confusing, psychological thriller, that in many ways is a similar style to Shutter Island.

• Also I think that Paramount pictures has taken many risks in taking on big films that could have been a disaster for them, and with that being said, I think that they may well take a risk in producing our film.

• In my opinion Paramount hasn’t failed to make a good film, so for them, producing our film may be worthwhile to them as our thriller has a lot of potential.

LastCard Productions Mission Statement

• Our company aims to produce high quality thriller movies that appeals to all thriller movies fans.

• We will mainly be known for producing psychological thrillers, this should be established when we first launch our first thriller movie, Recollection, fans of Hannibal and Shutter island will especially enjoy that film.

• With the launch of our first film and the production of many others, we want our company to be internationally popular and be able to work with many famous actors and directors, to grow our company as much as possible and be recognised as a famous film production company amongst the big ones, like Paramount, Lionsgate and Universal.

• Above all we want to create appealing films that are worth going to the Cinema for and buying on DVD, not just to be watched online through internet streaming sites and regarded as bad films.

Our production company

• Production company name• Last Card Productions

• Logo

• Role of your company• The main role of our company is to produce clever,

psychological thrillers that appeal to all fans of the thriller genre.

• Story We were required to produce a thriller To be different we decided on a Psychological Crime Thriller Took some ideas from the Hannibal series as it had clever twist

on the thriller genre we wanted to adapt • Team roles

The story only required 2 main actors Camera man, director and post production editor were decided

based on individual skills and interests• Story board

We firmed up the plot and created detailed scenes on a story board. This helped firm up the story and intricate story and ensured we were prepared for filming

• Costumes As part of the work we did with the story line we decided on

the costumes• Locations

We visited a potential location and agreed it was perfect for our story

• Filming Decided on the equipment to use and tested it. We needed to do several retakes and reshoots to get it right

as some parts were not up to our production company standards

• Editing We produced a rough cut to check the continuity and decide

on what music and sound effects best suited the footage.

The LastCard Production Company tasks…

Idea of a distributor

• Distributers role… Distributors are the companies that market a film. They set the release date and method of viewing.

• Paramount Pictures Corporation One of the “Big 6” distributers We chose them to potentially help with production

so it may be beneficial to also have them distribute our film

They are distributors of many high profile and successful films and film series

They have lots of experience as they have been distributers since the early days of films

Funding…where do film producers get funds?

• There are many ways in which film company's find funds to produce and release their films for example: Government funding Pre-sales and co-productions Product placement (for example Heineken placing

their lager for James bond to drink in the Highly budgeted Skyfall movie.)

Allow artists to produce a song to go with the movie and put their name in the credits, like Adele with her song “Skyfall”

Self-finance- A lot of the bigger film companies tend to do this, like with the transformers films, the producers where able to make more movies due to the massive amount of profits from the first movie, this meant that they could use a lot of that profit to make the other movies

• Because our production company is making their first ever film, although the film is low budgeted, we may need some government funding to ensure that we can fully produce and distribute the movie

Title sequence• Why? Title sequences are used in every

film to provide the names of all the key production companies/people and their roles in making the film, also distributor and then Key actors in the film.

• The order is normally… Name of the production studio. Main production companies. Primary artistic credits. Principle actors/starring… Film title Other titles can be shown like music

composer, what the film is based on, book authors, editors. etc.

Page 9: Media evaluation activity 3

• We had a look at some real title sequences used in films and decided on how we should input these title sequences into our opening

• We went with a narrative title sequence as it was more effective within the limited time that we have, and it also links in well with the footage

• We decided on a neutral white font for our title sequence which seemed to go best with the screenplay, and also the white font works well with our flashback and gives the right atmosphere while it is happening.

• Title sequence starts after the film starts, Whilst the detective is introduced, and then when we see the flashback

• The first title to appear is Last Card productions followed by distributors, and then key actors, followed by cameramen, then finally title of the film, however we chose to place the title of the film ‘Recollection’ at the end of opening to make the ending more tense

Our title sequence.

What your film is similar to ‘institutionally’?

• Films such as Paranormal Activity that had a very low budget but made lots of money is similar to ours

• we are not well known as of yet, and we want to ensure that if our film turns out to be unsuccessful we can move on without making too much of a loss

• However we would expect our film to be a success like Paranormal Activity which has become a globally recognised and very popular film series, bearing in mind that the Movie was made for just $15,000 and delivered a massive 434,000 percent return on investment

• Another example is the Blair Witch Project, which was another low budget film which grossed $248,639,099 worldwide but was budgeted for in-between $500,000 and $750,000

• This shows that if our movie turns out to be a big success, we have a very high chance of making a large amount of profit

Page 11: Media evaluation activity 3

Selling Point of our film• An international film company would buy and sell our film

because… Low budget film, so they wont have to pay out a large amount of

money for our film History of our type of film being very successful for example

paranormal activity. British films are very popular at the moment, in many different

countries and within the UK• What our the main selling points of our film?

British produced thriller movie Some of the British special effects are some of the best in the

world. Our film is more of a clever twist to the thriller genre rather the

common horror stories which is our USP (Unique selling point) People such as myself are getting bored of films mostly based

around CGI effects and brutal horror, and I am much more interested in character building and films with a good and unique storyline, such as the recent big hit, the Babadook

Page 12: Media evaluation activity 3

Ways of releasing the film• The intention for our film is to release it globally to

cinemas. • After a set time or perhaps when the film is out of

the cinemas, we would allow streaming companies to publish the film online and also bring out a DVD copy

• Streaming companies will be interested in our film because if our film is popular, the streaming sites are mainly interested in gaining profit from the films they publish, we would only consider a well known streaming service like Netflix or Amazon instant streaming as other can be unreliable

• Also we could potentially bring out a Blu-ray copy for an increased price

• This will ensure that we make the most profits out of our film even after cinema release
