San Diego State University is the largest higher education institution in the San Diego area. Founded in 1897, it is the third-oldest university in the California State University system, and one of the oldest

universities in California. SDSU enrolls over 32,000 students who can choose from 85 undergraduate majors, 75 master’s programs and 14 doctorate programs.

SDSU participates in NCAA Division I athletics in the Mountain West Conference. In 2010, both the men and women’s basketball teams won their conference, earning them an automatic spot to the NCAA

tournament. Other teams include baseball, football, golf, soccer, crew, and tennis.

The Daily Aztec is San Diego State University’s independent student newspaper. The Daily Aztec was

established in 1913 as the Normal News. It later became the Paper Latern in 1921, then The Aztec in 1925. It became The Daily Aztec in 1960. The Daily Aztec is financially independent. It relies solely on advertising sales to fund operations, printing costs and staff. The Daily Aztec receives no state, student or auxiliary funding. 10,000 copies are distributed every Monday through Thursday during the school year.
