Notes, Short Comments, and Answers toCorrespondents.

GENTLEMEN forwarding newspapers containing paragraphs to which theywish to draw our attention are particularly requested to mark suchpassages.

G. B. R.—1. An ovum is discharged from one or more Graafian follicles ateach menstrual period, but not the Graafian follicle itself. It is probablethat in the majority of cases only one ovum is so thrown off from one orthe other ovary.-2. Probably in the case of twins.-3. Not known. Pro-

bably not.3&. H. J. W., (Boston.)-The disease is probably due to a vegetable para-

site, the presence of which might, perhaps, with the aid of proper re-agents, be detected by the microscope. Our correspondent should ask hismedical attendant to examine the hair for this purpose.

Alpha.—It is kind to believe that some good degrees may come out ofPhiladelphia; but such faith should not be relied on, and we can onlyrepeat the advice we have given to the owners of Philadelphia degrees-viz., to make a profound secret of their possession.

B. B.-The licence of the London College of Physicians includes the rightto practise medicine, surgery, and midwifery.

STRONG BEEF-TEA.

To the Editor of THE LANCET.SIR,—In reports of cases of acute disease one not unfrequently observes

the prominent part that strong beef-tea" obtains in the dietary. For in-

stance in the account of the illness of the late Mr. J. S. Mill, contained inyour issue of May 24th, it is said that he had " strong beef-tea at frequentintervals." Perhaps we are not to conclude that no better nourishment wasgiven. But I would venture to take the opportunity of asking whetherthere is not a considerable number of practitioners who, in common withthe public, still assign an undue place to this fluid ? If testimony on thesubject be needed, I would quote from a recent article by the late BaronLiebig, in which, while advocating the value of his extract of meat, heclasses it with tea and coffee. He says : " It will be well understood, there-fore, that by the addition of extract of meat to our food, we neithereconomise carbon for the maintenance of the temperature, nor nitrogen forthe sustenance of the organs of our body, and that, therefore, it cannot becalled food in the ordinary sense."’ In regard to any alleged advantage ofbeef-tea over meat-extract, he further remarks : " Both extract of meat andbeef-tea are prepared from the same material exactly in the same manner, and the difference of the former from beef-tea consists simply in extract ofmeat being beef-tea condensed to the consistency of honey."Misapprehension on this matter may surely lead to grave consequences in

acute disease. Your obedient servant,Eastbourne-terraee, May 28th, 1873. W. WXLBXRFORGR SMITH.
