1ST AND 2ND LONDON SANITARY COMPANIESR.A.M.C. (T.F.).-The first reunion dinner, since the endof the late war, of the 1st and 2nd London SanitaryCompanies of the Territorial Force was held on Feb. 8th,at the Imperial Hotel. Major Goddard, who commandedthe 2nd London Sanitary Company at the outbreak ofwar, presided over a gathering of more than 300 formerofficers and men. The guest of the evening was Major-General Sir Wilfred Beveridge, who was the Deputy Director-General, Sanitation, at General Headquarters for the greaterpart of the war in France, and was therefore the officerresponsible for the work of the sanitary sections mannedby the two sanitary companies. In responding to the toastof the Guests, Sir Wilfred gave an interesting account ofthe part played by the sanitary companies in the war.He reminded his hearers that in the original ExpeditionaryForce no provision was made for sanitary sections, thoughthere was personnel trained in water duties. The twoLondon sanitary companies formed part of the TerritorialForce at the commencement of war and had an establishmentof six officers and about 150 men in each company. Verysoon it was found that there was urgent need in Franceof men trained in sanitary work, and the sanitary companieswere enlarged so as to form a reserve from which officersand men could be sent out to the various theatres of war.The first sanitary section, consisting of one officer and 25men with full equipment, was sent out in October and wasstationed at Rouen. General Beveridge soon found thatsimiliar sections were needed for work with the Divisions, and 12 sections were sent out to France in December fromthe two sanitary companies and were posted to variousDivisions. From this time there was a steady stream ofsanitary sections until each Division had its own section, Iwhile others were posted on the line of communication. ISanitary sections were also sent to Gallipoli, Italy, Salonica, and Africa. By the end of the war nearly 300 sanitarysections were in being. It was a remarkable tribute tothe efficiency of the original companies that it was possibleto train such a large personnel of officers and men throughout ’,the whole course of the war. The work of the sanitarysection, said Sir Wilfred, was of the utmost value and couldnot be overpraised. It had been estimated that an army- could not afford a wastage from disease and sickness ofmore than 0-3 per cent. That this figure was rarely reached..and scarcely ever exceeded was largely due to the workof the sanitary sections in the field. Major Goddardproposed the health of the Old Comrades of the Sanitary- Companies. This toast was responded to by Prof. R. J. S.McDowall, who was in charge of a section during the war.The toast of Absent Comrades was proposed by Major Martin,of the 2nd London Sanitary Company, and responded toby Mr. Manser, a former staff-sergeant, who was chieflyresponsible for the arduous task of getting in touch withthe former officers and men and for arranging the dinner.

WESTERN INFIRMARY, GLASGOW.-The annual reportrecords an ordinary income of £72,639, and an expenditurewhich left a deficit of £9665, an improvement upon the£12,337 deficit of the preceding year. There were 15,521in-patients and 38,437 out-patients, a total increase of3616. The average period of residence was 18-18 days, asagainst 20-05 days in 1928, and the average cost per patientwas £6 14s. 8d., as compared with £7 18s. 3d. in the precedingyear. After deducting patients who died within 48 hours ofadmission, the death-rate was 5-1 per cent. The means forproviding an ophthalmic department have been in hand since1916, but owing to the continuance of the Rent RestrictionsAct it has not been possible to clear the site, which is occupiedby tenements belonging to the Infirmary. The new X rayand electrical department is nearing completion, and is

expected to be in full working order within the next threemonths.

BIDEFORD HOSPITAL.—In this small hospital theaverage cost per occupied bed fell last year from £2 3s. perweek to £2 Os. 9d. Administration cost 3-49 per cent.

BRADFORD HOSPITAL AND CONVALESCENT FUND.-For the sixth successive year this Fund is allocating£20,000 to the City’s hospitals and institutions. In thelast 25 years £292,000 have thus been provided.A BRICK HOSPITAL IN THE " GRANITE CITY."—The

possibility that the new Joint Hospitals at Foresterhill, maybe built of brick instead of the native granite, is causing ananimated discussion in Aberdeen. The buildings, insteadof costing £400,000 as originally estimated, are now expectedto cost half a million at least, and it is understood that thegoverning body of the Royal Infirmary has therefore beenconsidering the possibility of reducing the amount bybuilding in brick instead of stone. On the one hand, it isargued that every mason in North and East Scotland is alreadyoccupied, and that a granite building would progress veryslowly owing to the scarcity of labour ; on the other hand, bricklayers are said to be even scarcer than masons andmen would have to be tempted from England and southernScotland by the offer of higher wages which would swallowup economies, which, it is represented would, in any event, bevery small.
