Medical Simulation with Video
Todays Goal will be to learn how to:
• Create a technology-enhanced classroom and Sim-Lab space that
is user friendly to both the faculty and student end users.
• Simplify the process of creating video based educational content
and distributing it online using a VLOR. (Video Learning Online
Repository)
• Looking at engineered solutions that give a return on investment for
effective integration of educational technology into the Sim Lab
and classroom.
Before we begin…

Will this be your University?
The University recognizes online best business practices and brings all the departments that deal with online programs under one VP/Dean.
Learning Management Suite will get even more integrated into the SIS/LDAP.
Content Developers/Instructional Designers time is spent on MOOCs and Social Media integration in addition to the LMS.
The University will “merge” Assessment, Online Quality and Grading which will play a bigger roll in determining positive faculty outcomes and student retension.

Video is now 70% of all internet traffic; What is it
on your campus? Online Classes?
Have questions on assessment of video in a flipped

Is there a campus/institutional plan blessed by the
academic administration for future support of the
online learner that allows them to both receive and
create video content for the purpose of learning?

What you mean by Simulation?
Different types of simulation are used by hospitals and
universities to teach up to date clinical lessons to students
in the hopes of improving their skills in healthcare to
deliver competent patient care and service.

Medical Capture Technology
Most of the medical DVR capture technology
can capture and display up 4 video sources and
one audio source into a time line.
A combination of composite, HD and VGA video
can be captured.
When building a medical, or healthcare facility,
correctly identification of screen display
resolution and aspect ratio from start to finish or
content creation to being viewed online is
important.
While most solutions are rack mounted and
engineered, there are mobile solutions
becoming available.

Medical Monitor Considerations~
American Association of Physicists in
Medicine
A DICOM conformance test is an
assessment of display performance for
medical imaging systems.
Simulations systems do not necessary have
to meet this standard, unless the same
system is used to diagnose real patients.
If you work with in a teaching hospital or
you are building a facility that teaches
med-students how to read X-Rays DICOM
compliant displays, support hardware &
graphics cards.
Medical Considerations~ (NEC)
DICOM calibrated at the factory
All medical monitors from NEC receive FDA 510(k) certification.
In order to deal with the most demanding visual display needs the monitors come up to 5 megapixels and sized from 21.3” to 29.8”.
Software that monitor the monitor if it falls out of FDA and DICOM compliance. By doing this NEC assures the image will be displayed in a in a uniform manner that facilitates the best diagnosis through outstanding image clarity and helps prevent cross-department issues.
Cadaver Considerations~
In addition to a DICOM monitor:
USB Microscopes that are at least a 2.1 Megapixel (1920X1080) in size.
Ceiling mounted PTZ “Gut-Cam” resolution matches the Microscope and Monitor.
Built in lecture capture into the cadaver lab camera space.
LMS LDAP into the VLOR so only students with permission can access some of the “colorful” images.

What is a institutional VLOR?
LMS – Learning Management Suite
CMS – Content Management Suite
VCMS – Video Capture Management Suite
LOR/VLOR – Learning Online
Repository/Video Learning Online
Repository
What is a institutional VLOR?
There are Faculty that have received permission from publishers to have
media streamed, which may otherwise be taken down or audio disabled by
YouTube.
Student created content is accessible to the institution for archival and
grading purposes.
- If a Faculty member leaves (especially mid semester), a VLOR will assure
the video materials that they have developed outside the of LMS will remain
accessible to the students…
- A private VLOR will remove issues with videos being removed for alleged
copyright infringement. Unlike the court of law, you are guilty until proven
innocent when it comes to YouTube and video copyright issues.

Return On Investment~
By effectively managing the refresh of campus technology to support online
learning the campus will support both its physical and online presence through
traditional, hybrid and online technology.
Planning for or being cognizant of DICOM medical requirements now, allows for
both capture and simulation technology to utilize the same backbone
infrastructure.
Advocating for your campus to start to teach hybrid and online using the flipped
classroom approach and advertising the use of BYOD today will give your
institution the competitive edge tomorrow.
Planning for a VLOR will further insure academic integrity of you LMS content.
