Meeting Facilities As in 1986, the Academy's meetings and exhibits will be in the new, well-designed New Orleans Convention Center. All scientific sessions will be held on Level One. Unlike 1986, however, when the instruction courses were completely self-contained within the hall on Level Two, we will require a few additional course rooms in the nearby New Orleans Hilton Hotel this year. Registration will be in the convention center lobby.

Academy Resource Center The Academy Resource Center provides information and materials on all Academy programs, services, and membership benefits. This year it will feature an extensive Education Exhibit, including course information and a display of all current products (most are available for purchase onsite); a Public and Professional Information Exhibit that will include the introduction of Patient Education Videos, plus a display on the National Eye Care Project; a Placement Exchange Service; a Membership Booth; and a Practice Management Consultant Booth. Staff will be available to answer questions about the Academy's Code of Ethics, the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and other Academy-sponsored insurance programs, state and federal legislation affecting ophthalmology, the Academy's Strategic Plan, Preferred Practice Patterns developed by the Quality of Care Committee, Ophthalmic Procedures Assessments, information services, and the activities of the Foundation.

Ophthalmic Heritage Exhibit The Ophthalmic Heritage exhibit will focus on the ten-year anniversary of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's separation from Otolaryngology. Selected photographs, artifacts and memorabilia which highlight special events in the Academy's recent history will be featured. Artifacts from the museum's permanent collection, as well as the oral histories of Drs. Thomas D. Duane, Harold G. Scheie, Dohrmann K Pischel, and Phillips Thygeson will also be displayed, and the oral histories will be available for sale.

Technical Exhibits The newest and most innovative ophthalmic medical technology and services will be on display. More than 325 companies will exhibit ophthalmic devices, equipment, instruments, educational materials, lasers, contact lenses, IOLs, pharmaceuticals and services such as practice management, office design and leasing. Exhibiting companies, their booth numbers and product categories will be listed in the Final Program.

Spouse Program New Orleans and the surrounding area offer a fascinating variety of sights to see, from magnificent antebellum plantations to nature-filled swamps. Spouses are invited to preregister and order tour tickets by completing the form mailed with the preregistration booklet in April. (Forms may also be obtained by contacting the Academy Meetings Department.) Spouses may also register and purchase available tour tickets onsite in the spouse registration area at the New Orleans Convention Center beginning Sunday, October 29. The registration fee is $35. Note: Children 12 years and older must register in this category to attend the meeting.

Related Groups During Academy Week, many subspecialty, national and international ophthalmologic societies, alumni groups, and related eye care organizations will hold scientific, business, and committee meetings in New Orleans. Further information about many of these meetings will appear in the Final Program. Allied health organizations will also be meeting in New Orleans. Registration for these meetings is separate from the Academy Annual Meeting registration. Please note: The only exception is the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses meeting.
