1373 Monday 11 September 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, There have been many highlights in the last fortnight that I am delighted to share with you in this edition of the Ignatian. Meeting of Jesuit and Companion schools I recently attended the third meeting for this year of principals of the schools in Australia which belong to the Ignatian/Jesuit Association called JACSA. The meeting was held at John XX111 College in Perth. We discussed ways of further strengthening the ties amongst our 10 schools with a view to further developing opportunities for our staff and students across a range of areas including formation of staff in the Ignatian charism, leadership development and combined activities. Father and Daughter Breakfast This year’s Fathers’ Day Breakfast was again a great success and fully booked out. Our guest speaker was a former Loyola parent Mr Paul Villanti who works for the Movember organisation as their Executive Director. He spoke of the importance of men looking after their mental health and wellbeing and of the key role their daughters can play in raising their fathers’ awareness of the importance of looking after oneself in a busy world. Following the breakfast there was a prayer service in St Ignatius Chapel lead by Fr Gerry Healy SJ. I thank Mrs Pritchard (Canteen Manager) and her helpers who prepared the breakfast together with Mrs Chapman and Ms Gartland and the VET Hospitality students who served. Working Bee A large number of families attended the final working bee for this year. The focus was preparing the grounds for the Open Day on Sunday 17 September. A great deal of work was carried out thanks to the generosity of so many. I thank Mr Lorenzo Rigoni who oversees the organisation of the day together with Mr Kelly (Head Gardener), Mr Short and Ms Ward (Assistant Gardeners) and Mr Hall our Facilities Manager. Enrolments for Year 7, 2019 I remind all families that Year 7 enrolments for 2017 have now closed. We have had significant interest and the number of applications has far exceeded the number of places available. One more round of Year 5 interviews will take place next week after which the final selection process will commence. It is wonderful to see such strong community interest in the College. ACS grand finals A total of 26 sporting teams have made the Winter ACS grand finals this year! This is an excellent achievement and I commend Mr Baxter, our Director of Sport and all coaches and students in the ACS program for making it to the finals of their respective sports. We wish all teams well in their final games.

1373 Monday 11 September 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

There have been many highlights in the last fortnight that I am delighted to share with you in this edition of the Ignatian.

Meeting of Jesuit and Companion schools I recently attended the third meeting for this year of principals of the schools in Australia which belong to the Ignatian/Jesuit Association called JACSA. The meeting

was held at John XX111 College in Perth.

Early dismissal Students will be dismissed at 1.15pm on Friday 15 September to allow staff to prepare the grounds and buildings for Open Day that will be held on the Sunday of that weekend. As mentioned earlier next weekend we have Open Day, an opportunity to showcase our wonderful College to the community and to attract future enrolments. You are encouraged to let friends, neighbours and relatives know who may be interested in sending their children to Loyola in the future.

The day represents in many ways a mosaic of everything that binds the College together and makes Loyola an educational community rooted in Christian faith following the Ignatian in the example of our patron Ignatius. In invite families to visit on the day to see our wonderful facilities and program offerings.

Fathers’ and Daughters’ Day Celebration This year was the daughters’ turn to celebrate Fathers’ day with their dads. The breakfast was booked out with over 200 attending. They were addressed by Mr Paul Villanti, Executive Director of the Movember Foundation, who spoke about the range of men’s health programs the organisation is doing and how it is now active in a number of countries around the world. We were delighted to have Paul and his wife Leigh, parents of ex-students Michael (L:01-06) and Louise (L:03-08), back with us.

Father Gerry Healy SJ, one of our College chaplains, talked to the girls about the importance of expressing gratitude regularly to their parents and others who did things for them.

The highlight of the morning was the opportunity for the fathers and their daughters to spend some time together and share some memories and reflect of the gift they are to each other.

SUSTAINABILITY CAPTAIN

For the past few months, the Sustainability club at Loyola College has been smashing our goals in raising awareness and funds for the endangered Australian species. We can definitely say that Fridays will never be the same without a pie! This weekly tradition has travelled across the school and reached all year levels and is making a huge impact and overwhelming demand for our pies. So far, we have raised over $500 from only a few months of pie selling!! I want to personally thank all students who have come down and supported the fundraiser, the students who are there every Friday aiding in the preparation and selling, as well as Mr Keegan and Ms Mastrippolito for their ongoing support.

Recently, we have also been working very hard on the vegetable garden in conjunction with the VCAL students. This new sustainable garden is home to a group of chickens who are producing huge amounts of eggs every week! We welcome any students who would like to be a part in taking care of these wonderful chickens or the vegetable garden on Thursday lunchtimes or anytime that suits you! Email myself or Mr Keegan for further details!

FROM THE STUDENTS

This year has been an absolute smasher for Mackillop House. With the Swimming carnival taking place early term 1, which gave us a day to remember as we pulled off one of the best wins in House swimming history. The House Eisteddfod took place in mid to late term 1 with everyone stepping forward and taking charge of our wonderful production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with us placing a very close 2nd. Public speaking and debating concluded recently with Mackillop placing 2nd which was a great effort from all of the students involved. House Cross Country was also undertaken in term 3 which saw Mackillop house place 3rd across all year levels. As events close to an end, fundraising for Mackillop family services has taken priority with the house conducting a raffle, the selling of chocolate boxes, and contributions to the organisation. With only few days remaining we need as much support as we can so feel free to make a difference for children in need!

As for the year 12’s, we can write about massive events like these all day long but so far what has made year 12 so renowned are the day-to-day experiences that we all share both as a cohort and as the front-runners for our House. It’s the experiences we share that we will miss after graduation. There’s definitely something special about year 12 that you just can’t understand until you are in it. We go through thick and thin together, through the tough weeks and the laid back Netflix weeks, and it is these times that bind us as a year level and House. Each and every day becomes significant not just because of the workload but also because of the experience.

With only 7 weeks remaining, year 12 drives us to make the most of the time we have left. We wish the best of luck to everyone as the year comes to a close and encourage all to push through till the end.

Year 7 Class Masses and Shared Meal Over the last couple of weeks our year seven students have gathered for a class meal, shared stories and discussed symbols that are meaningful to them. This activity is part of the Eucharist topic. This activity assists in developing their understanding of the sacrifice of the Mass, the structure and significance of its component parts and symbolic actions and their meaning, connection and relevance to the students’ daily lives.

Each group prepares and actively participates in a Mass said by one of the parish clergy or our Jesuit chaplain, Father Gerry Healy SJ.

Parents are always welcome at College Masses and liturgies.

Applications for Loyola’s 2018 Immersions Applications are due on Monday, 11 September. Students need to write to Mr Favrin, stating the reasons why they should

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING AND LEARNING)

Year 10, 11 and 12 Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews Thank you to all parents/guardians and students who attended the recent Year 11 and 12 Subject Specific Interviews. Year 12 Parents and guardians are encouraged to refer to the Year 12 Specific Subject Advice Handbook over the remaining two months as we all support our Year 12 students in the final preparation for examinations or completion of VCAL.

Year 7 - 9 Academic Conversation The Year 7 – 9 Academic Conversations will be held on October 12 (3:45 – 7:15pm). The Parent Portal will be open from September 15 to October 11. We encourage all parents and guardians to make an interview time, as this will be final formal opportunity to discuss how your child is travelling and

how to prepare for the final assessments and examinations. It is also helpful to our Office staff if parents and guardians make their own bookings, so they do not have to make a follow up telephone call. Please be aware that this round of reports are available online prior to the interviews.

Unit 4 Trial Examinations Report A reminder that all students studying a Unit 4 subject will receive an individual statement of Trial Examination results following the correction of all papers. This report will be sent via email in the first week of term four. Any issues concerning the Trial examinations should be directed to Ms Staub.

additions of a ‘Booth Zone’ for mini conferences, ‘Design’benchtops and a large projector screen further add to the vision of the iCentre as a hub to truly explore and create.

A Reading Culture Apart from creating a learning environment to meet the different needs of our staff and students, our other priority has been to promote a strong reading culture to support literacy development. The Reading Zone is a warm and inviting place for students to ‘escape into a book’. Reading programs such as the year 7 Genre Reading Challenge and the year 8 Million Words Challenge motivate our students to read regularly and widely. Students also engage in book conversations with a librarian once they have read a book for the Challenge.

Co-Curricular We continue to offer two co-curricular activities in the iCentre: Book club and Maker Space. Both have seen an increase in numbers this year.

Book Club Highlights include the ‘Movie vs Books’ debate and an author talk with Danielle Binks about Australian young adult fiction.

Maker Space Students enjoyed playing with virtual reality headsets and creating 3D models

Events We have been busy organising many engaging activities for students throughout the year. These include: The Harry Potter book launch lunch and the Escape Room experience for this year’s Book Week. The students’ enthusiasm and positive feedback makes all the hours spent planning worthwhile.

FROM HEAD OF VISUAL ARTS

Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and the Daine Singer Gallery Excursion On Thursday 17 August the Year 12 Studio Arts students ventured out into Melbourne to visit the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and the Daine Singer Gallery. Students viewed different contemporary art installations and listened to floor talks by educators and Daine Singer herself.

Students were particularly impressed by the huge oak tree installed in ACCA gallery, which was removed from its outdoor location and exhibited in the gallery as part of the ‘Greater Together’ exhibition. The students will write about their gallery experiences in their upcoming SAC and end of year exam.

Visual Arts Fortnightly Award The Visual Art’s fortnightly award goes to Harrison Mills (FSKE) for his photorealistic portrait drawing created in Ms Stafford’s Year 10 Art class.

FROM VCAL COORDINATOR

Year 11 VCAL Pop-up Coffee Shop Year 11 VCAL students have been running a Pop-up Coffee Shop during the cold month of August. Using the coffee making skills they learnt at a Barista Course and the business skills from the Certificate II in Small Business, each student has been part of the project. The project involved selling

coffee to staff and hot chocolate to students either before school or during lunch break.

In small groups, students had to use a range of work skills including planning, communication, teamwork, ordering, pricing and problem solving. The students brought many smiles to staff and students faces with their customer service skills and the quality coffees and hot chocolates they made. Some of the regular customers even started comparing which coffee maker they thought was the best!

The project is a great example of the applied learning approach of the VCAL program with students able to take problem solving, planning and teamwork skills learnt at school into the work place. Through reflection, students will be able to identify where they may improve their offerings so they can ‘pop-up’ again next winter.

VCAL Student Profile VCAL allows students to commence their career pathway while completing school. In addition to attending school three days a week, students attend TAFE and work placement two days a week in their vocational field of choice. Our students have a broad range of career interests as shown in the VCAL student profile.

FROM LANGUAGES TEACHER

Indonesian Language Competition 2017 'Each year the Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers’ Association (VILTA), together with The University of Melbourne, hold an Indonesian Language competition which is open to students who learn Indonesian Language from Grade One to Year 11.

There were three parts or components in the competition. In the first part, students had to be ready and able to answer questions on daily conversations. In the second part, students had to explain in one minute about a specific issue, then in the last section, students had to answer some questions relating to the topic.

This was a very good opportunity for students who learn Indonesian Language to meet other students from other schools, as well as to build students' confidence in speaking the target language.

Victoria State-Wide Indonesian Language Speaking Competition 2017 This competition is a collaboration between the VILTA (Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers’ Association), the

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and The Asia Institute – The University of Melbourne.

This year there were around 1500 students who participated in this competition in which the selection round were held in 11 districts all across Victoria, and the final round was taken place at the University of Melbourne.

This year, Connor Zinkel went to the Final Round and received a Highly Recommended certificate.

Year 9 Media Excursion Year 9 MEDc recently attended the world wide acclaimed Ardman Claymation film exhibition and workshop at the ACMI federation square complex.

Students viewed various works from films such as 'Wallace and Gromit, 'Chicken Run' and 'Pirates'. Students were also able to experiment with creating their own characters and complete a short clay animation sequence.

The experience will assist them in the class room as they embark on their own short Claymation film.

FROM INTERCULTURAL PERSPECTIVES COORDINATOR

High Resolves – Independent Thinking Following on from last term’s module Collective Identity, our year 8 students recently participated in the second module of their High Resolves journey – Independent Thinking. This session took place on 17, 18 or 24 August and involved 4 periods of interactive activities and reflection, with a focus on students challenging their unconscious biases.

During period 1, with our teaching staff Intercultural Understanding reps, the students explored the notion that each one of us uses our unconscious biases every day to process the world around us. Following on from this, Jon Christie from High Resolves spent the next two periods helping the students to learn to feel more confident about recognising these unconscious biases and to learn strategies for resisting them at times. The culmination of the day was an assessment task and reflection designed by the ICU reps to gauge our students’ level of intercultural understanding as a result of the day’s activities. This task, along with the independent evaluation run by High Resolves, demonstrated that our students have an extremely high level of understanding and knowledge in the area.

The program was very well received by our students, and many of them expressed their newly learnt skills to their

teachers. Please find below a few examples:

Nathan Macawili (8 MFVE): “The game had the biggest impact on me because it shows how easy the human mind can be influenced and changed to see the false rather than the truth”

Aoife Rodden (8 CLCR): “I resolve to not fall into tricks by people who look like experts. To do my own research, not let others’ gossip and opinions cloud my decision.”

Ashleigh Butterick (8 APZA): “The investigator activity had the biggest impact on me because I wasn’t expecting it and it showed me how I let other people influence my decision.”

College Morning Tour The next Monday Morning Tour will be held on Monday 09

October from 9:15am – 11:00am.

Bookings are essential via – https://www.trybooking.com/276067

The tour will include Morning Tea with our Principal, Mr Joseph Favrin.

Father & Daughter Breakfast – Thursday, 31 August I hope all dads and guardians had a wonderful Father’s day on Sunday.

It was a pleasure to see so many fathers venture out on such a cold morning to join their daughters for our annual Father’s day breakfast celebration. Out hearty cooked breakfast was prepared by our exceptionally hard working Canteen staff, led by Mrs Joanne Pritchard and then served by our wonderful Hospitality students, led by Ms Fiona Chapman

and Miss Elizabeth Gartland, creating a fine dining experience for all.

We were honoured to have Mr Paul Villanti, Executive Director for Movember as our guest speaker for this occasion. Movember is a Men’s’ Health charitable organisation that is ‘Helping men live happier, healthier, longer lives’.

Paul was also going to be accompanied by his daughter, Louise, who is a program manager for Save the Kids Foundation. Louise is an ex-student of Loyola College, graduating in 2008 and has followed her father’s footsteps in working and leading within a charitable organisation. It was unfortunate that Louise was ill on the day and so Paul addressed our audience on very important matters.

Paul spoke very openly about the importance of the awareness for men’s health – both physical and mental. A great insight was provided into men’s tendency to help out others, yet they are not good on following up on issues of concerns for themselves. Paul also emphasised the need for men to maintain social connections to assist each other in seeking help when needed. Paul also strongly encouraged the daughters in the room to support their fathers and look out for their needs and early signs that may indicate a struggle. Things to encourage their fathers to do is to be present when at home engaging in conversation with the family and not be distracted by their phones, to remain sociable with friends and not always rely on their wives or partners to engage them socially and to remain physically active which works hand in hand with mental health.

The morning was then followed by a lovely Prayer Service from our Jesuit priest Fr Gerry Healy who highlighted the importance of thanking fathers not just on Father’s Day.

Working Bee – 02 September 2017 It was our last Working Bee for 2017 and despite the little rain over 40 parents and students arrived to assist. There was plenty to do, mulch, mulch and more mulching. It was then nice to reward all those who attended with some nice food and drink. As Spring approaches, our Loyola gardens will be in full bloom and will look even more amazing. Thanks to our Gardening/Maintenance team and all the wonderful parents and students who do such a great job throughout the year. If

anyone is interested in assisting with upcoming Working Bees, please let me know and I will place your name on the list.

Our Twilight Working Bee next year will be on Friday, 02 March commencing at 4:00pm.

Open Day Open Day is on Sunday, 17 September from 1:00pm-4:00pm. It will be wonderful showing all prospective families the great facilities offered at Loyola College, including our new Magis Performing Arts Centre.

The LPFA will be holding a BBQ on the day, if you are interested in helping, please send me an email – [email protected] and I will pass your details to our President, Kim Garth who will be co-ordinating the BBQ.

If any students would like to volunteer as student guides on the day, please email me with your details.
