House This month has been much like the past couple, simply enjoying the summer and making sure everything is the way it should be at the Club. As far as additional activity we had the hurricane drill, with Erika, and it went very well. The one thing that really stood out in my mind was

we didn’t have a documented overall comprehensive plan, or at least something we could find. We have some plans for different areas (Thanks, Jack Bibb, for sending along the boat plan), but the overall plan(s) couldn’t be found. House had a plan put together in the beginning of the year, and started implementing the plan. Docks, Sail Ed and Fleet started moving through their plans as well, and what we did worked well. Communications worked, volunteer coordination worked, but an overall plan is still needed. So, I know there are past plans out there that will supply some “past lessons learned”, and I need to get them, so the new plan will contain this information and be as complete as possible.

So if you can send me a past overall plan, we can use it. If you can find a specific area plans, we can use that. If you can supply a suggestion and opinion (yikes, might be stepping into something with asking for opinions) we can use them as well, so send me your thoughts and your documents! Any help or support you can provide in this endeavor would truly be appreciated. Again, I am sure these plans have already been made and we just need to get them. Once we have the past plans we can roll them into a complete overall plan and post it in the Chart Room, so they don’t get lost again. Please put “Hurricane Plan” in the subject line of your email, or just send me your thoughts using the Message link on our Website under the “Find Us” section, send to Vice Commodore.

Commodore’s Log September is the time of the year to prepare for the fall sailing and cruising season. Starting with the Mermaid Regatta on the 12th

-13th of September. With its Greek theme, many are "trimming" their togas to meet the theme. It ought to be a great time!

The Dragon Point racing continues, and I hope to see the cruising class expand. Making your boat go faster and sailing in different conditions provides you confidence in your boat. In October, the J24 District Championships are being co-hosted by MYC and EGYC. MYC handles the events on the water and EGYC handles the land activities. This is the best of both Clubs! The next weekend in October is the MYC Flea Market and it is a great way to give others the joy of acquiring your stuff that has been taking up room in your garage. You can donate your treasures to the Club and never have to see it again. Now, there is a deal!

The following two weeks are the Fall Regattas. There are many events to volunteer for. Dean, aka Fleet, and Greg, aka Entertainment, are going to need your help; so send them a note and tell them how you can help.

Whew, what an active couple of months for the club! There is no better way to finish the busy season than to throw a Halloween party.

I thought we would have an answer from the DEP by the end of August but there are more tasks to be completed. We have to have approval from the State or Coast Guard that our additional slips won't impede the navigation in that area. Danna is in the process of contacting them to get approval. I don't think we will have a decision by the Mermaid Regatta but I'm hoping we will know something before the Fall Regattas. As always, thanks to our consultant Danna for dogging the agencies to keep the process moving.

I hope to see you all at the club and continuing to promote sailing in our community

Fleet Things are really starting to amp up around the club. The racing schedule has been very full the last month or so and will continue that way until the winter. Dragon Point racing is now in the middle of their fall series. Co-ed racing continues to be well attended with seven to ten boats out for each race. The women's series is still only

getting four boats out but they continue to battle each race. On the 22nd of August there was a double handed race with 13 boats taking part. Commodore Knowlton was the PRO for the race. He crowned winners in three classes, Will Moore & Suzanne Dunphy won the J-24 class, Dave Nesbitt & Marty "Kiwi" Stohl won the PHRF 1 class and Pat Lambert & Eric Stord were the winners of the PHRF Cruising class. Thanks to all the participants as well as Angie & Brad Stowers for helping Tom and offering up their boat for the event.

On the 29th Of August PC Pat Lambert held his annual Full Moon Regatta. The club was full of excitement as the time got close for the skippers meeting. Drinks were being enjoyed and glow sticks were lighting up the club. Just before the crews were to head out on the water, the skies opened up with a summer storm. Lightning and heavy rain kept the sailors at the bar for about an hour. Pat saw a weather window open and instructed the crews to hit the water and get to racing. Everyone scrambled to get to the start line, but the weather gods were not going to let us race. No wind! The boats bobbed around Banyan waiting for some wind to pick up, but it never did. Pat and his committee saw another storm front was approaching, so he sent all the boats to the barn. It was still a fun night and by the sounds coming from the bar, I don't think anyone missed the racing too much. Thanks to Pat and his committee for all their effort and to Karen & Bob Sowden for the use of their boat Banyan for the event.

The Mermaid Regatta is going on as this Tell Tale is being published, so a full wrap up will be in next month’s issue.

The Fall Regatta is coming up very soon. Small Boat is Oct. 17th-18th and will be held at the club again. Big Boat activities start with the Adult Pram Races on Thursday the 22nd, followed by the Yankee Rebel Rally on Friday night. The Big Boat Regatta will be on the 24th-25th of October. Watch the "On The Water" page, as well as the weekly email blasts for all the important information you will need for these events.

Dean White / Fleet Captain

Entertainment September brings more activities at MYC. TGIF is still going strong; accompanied with The Mermaid Regatta; with food/ fun/games!

Greg Crawford / Entertainment Director

So we are soliciting more opinions for the property across the street, the Tire Store. We are looking into formulating a plan for the property, and would like YOUR inputs. Current thoughts are: make it a parking lot, to putting up a utility type building, to permit storage and a covered place to work on Club boats, to putting up a commercial building, and the list goes on… BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK? Please, let us know your thoughts. Again anyone who would like to share their thoughts in person is welcome to do so at the monthly House Committee meeting (conducted every month, on the Wednesday before the General Membership meeting at 5:45ish). You can also share your thoughts via messaging or email as mentioned above, use “Tire Store” in the email subject line.

So, as always, Thanks again for everyone’s contributions in making the Club what it is today, a Great Place to be a Member!

Eric Stord / House Vice Commodore

Membership MYC Membership

The Membership Committee did not meet in August.

Membership actions:

Resident applicants Ray & Jill Liles received final approval in the August 31, 2015 board meeting.

Resident applicant Melissa Tribou received final approval at the August 31, 2015

Junior Resident applicant Mayowa Ogunjobi received final approval in the August 31, 2015 board meeting.

Resident applicant Diana Foreman received final approval at the August 31, 2015 board meeting. Diana’s bio is as follows:

I am a returning member who missed the fun atmosphere at MYC. I'm retired and have two daughters, Molly and Emma. I'm a terrible sailor, especially in a 420, but I am enthusiastic and I have improved this summer to the point that I no longer accidentally knock myself overboard with the tiller. I'll probably master tacking soon but meanwhile I'll be enjoying all the other activities at MYC.

Extended Provisional applicant Kim Garrett was approved at the August 31, 2015 board meeting. Kim’s bio is as follows:

Kim was born and raised outside Atlanta, GA. She attended Georgia Tech as an engineering major and worked in the aerospace industry for many years. She moved to Melbourne in 2003 to work for Harris as a Program Manager, but moved over to Northrop Grumman in 2014. She has always been interested in learning to sail, but until her children left for college she didn't find the time. She has been sailing as crew for Rick & Suzanne Crockett, Jerry Ross, and Del Wiese for the last several months and has found her new love in sailing. She is finishing the beginner sailing class now and is looking forward to the next offering of an intermediate class. She doesn't own a sailboat now, but is looking forward to learning enough to own her own boat in the near future.

Membership Statistics (assuming all issues are approved):

Resident = 146, Non-Resident = 25, Corinthian = 9, Emeritus = 2, Junior Resident = 6, Provisional = 0, Extended Provisional = 2, Honorary = 12. Total of 202

Gary Briand / Membership Director

Grog Locker

Hello, MYC. The rainy, slow, low activity month of August, 2015, has proven to be a surprisingly good month for the bar – revenues were $2,812, which represents a 117% increase over August, 2014.

Of course, we're all looking forward to September bringing the Mermaid Regatta and big crowds, so the bar should do even better next month.

Our special bargain prices have been successful in depleting unneeded supplies. Sailor Jerry rum is done, the Margaritas have been selling well reduce our over abundant supply of Tequila stock, and the J. Lohr Riesling bargain price is whittling down that supply, so our remaining Riesling will remain the Barefoot house brand.

Please let me know – in person, email, or text, if you have any interest in IPA bottled beers. I have had a request - actually, all of two requests - for Goose Island and Sierra Nevada IPAs. I've also had a request for Sam Adams beer. Are there any other takers for these products out there?

Sailing Education Adult Sailing

August was a busy month. The intermediate class finished their last class on Aug 2nd, practicing starts and racing. Rumor has it that timing the start is the trickiest part – welcome to racing!

The fall beginner class started on August 13th. The students have been on the J24s and 420s. They’ve practiced their tacks, tipping and righting the boat. They experienced sore thighs and a variety of black and blue marks after their first sail in the 420s.

Our thanks to the J24 volunteers – Red Hot – Chris Gates & Doug Branch; More Cowbell – Tony Godden and Kyle Smith. Thanks to Not Quite Right owners Will Moore & Suzanne Dunphy for letting David Silverman skipper their boat.

Thanks to 420 coaches and rescue boat drivers– Suzanne

Dunphy, Robin Floyd, Brian Gilcher, Pat Lambert, Page Profit, Nick Riegel, and Scott Wotherspoon. Special thanks to Will Moore for jumping in and being the on the water coach for Instructor Dave Oatway. Dave Oatway has a herniated disk – feel better Dave.

The morning of jibes I woke up to thunder, not a good thing. Erika caused trouble so class was canceled. Rain, thunder, and lots of wind equal a no-sail day.

Youth Sailing

New and returning students sailed in the Opti’s and 420’s. In early August a race course was set up for the 420s and the girls practiced their starts and racing.

The youth were happy dealing with the remnants of Erika, the only good sailing conditions were on Saturday morning and early afternoon. The last class of the August session ended with some ice cream as the weather deteriorated.

The September class will start 9/5. There will be no class on 9/12 due to the MYC Mermaid Regatta but the class will have the opportunity to sail on bigger boats that weekend. Classes will be held all other Saturdays in September.

There will not be any classes during October due to other MYC events scheduled on three weekends.

Thanks to all the volunteers – parents helping with boats, Christin, Cameron Smith, and Jillian Aydelotte.

For two weeks Phil Spletter ran all day sailing camps at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in August. It was a wonderful experience at a great facility. During the camp he met several more young sailors who really like sailing and want to get better. A team is forming to sail in the MYC fall regatta. The idea of starting competitive sailing for high school aged kids is growing. If we can get 2-3 more teams out, we would continue to grow towards a serious youth sailing program.

Finally, an update on the sea turtle that one of the sailing classes rescued in June. The turtle is at the Sea World turtle rescue facility. It is alive and well, but since it is missing a front flipper, it will remain in captivity. Thanks to Zoey Cook and her family for the update.

Dock Notes Another busy month on the docks! First, I would like to welcome Frank & Karen Dawson to the West Dock. Long time members with three beautiful little girls, they now have a big girl, J 30 Bullrush AKA Tony Godden’s Gold Rush. Tony says he is looking to get into the cruising fleet and two J Boats were a bit much, so we now have new-old members on the docks and we hope to welcome a new cruising boat to the docks soon.

We have had on-going electrical problems on the East Dock that required several days of trouble shooting, and then, several more hard hot days of work pulling up deck planks replacing aged wiring and conduit. I would like to thank PC Bob Hughes, PC Del Weise and especially PC Al Waschka, who was instrumental in repairing the problem. I would also like to thank new member Sean Freeman, who gave up his planned Friday Double Hand Race preparation day to jump in and help out on the docks. Little did he know he would be jumping in all the way, to the bottom, to retrieve wire spools and tools. The problems have been corrected, new wire and conduit have been installed and power is back up and running in problem sections of the East Dock.

Hurricane season has arrived a bit late but it’s here now with a rapid upswing in activity. Tropical storm Erika was a wakeup call and good practice. I would like to thank Grant Ball and the Dock Committee for swinging into action with early preparations. Fortunately, we got a reprieve as Erika blew herself out south of Cuba; however, there is still on-going activity out in the Atlantic. I would like to ask everyone with boats on the docks and in onshore storage to review the storm preparation rules and advice. Be ready to start early when we have a storm coming. Check your dock lines, are they fresh and sized correctly for your vessel? Have you looked at storm preparation guidelines in the club directory and on the web site? Start your storm prep early, start now, have a plan and the necessary materials and be ready to work with the Docks and House Committees when the call goes out!

Jack Clark / Dockmaster
