1 Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce

My wife, Patty, tells a story about teaching our youngest son Nathan to say thank you. At the time Nathan was 8 years old. He was quiet and shy around adults so, he was not in the habit of showing his gratitude. Suffice it to say Patty used some creative incentives to encourage Nathan to say thank you, but never knew if they worked. One day a friend took the time to call Patty to say how nice it is that Nathan would always say thank you. This story reminds me of the power in those simple words.

So in honor of my son, this is a big, in fact huge, thank you, to Lori and the Chamber staff of Austin, Elisabeth, Ashley, Lisa, Chad, DiAnne, Jillian, Brandan, and Liz for their outstanding efforts and dedication. Together they are on track for another successful year filled with accomplishments and strategic visionary thinking.

The Chamber Marketing and Communications team of Elisabeth and Brandan re-tooled the Chambers MOMENTUM Magazine changing it from a directory to a detailed Annual Report with metrics for success and featured articles that tell “the Chamber Story” of what we do to benefit our Members. The same team integrated the new Chamber logo into all of its marketing materials culminating with the launch of the Chambers new and exciting website.

The Event team of Lisa and Jillian tirelessly worked to organize the great events that our Chamber offers each year. Every luncheon is a well-coordinated event, with energy and important business content for our Members. Events like Women in Business, that had record attendance this year and programming that everyone raved about. Driving continuous improvement, they also worked to re-engineer the Chamber Business Expo into BIZCON.

Austin was instrumental in driving the support and successful passage of the 2015 Statewide Transportation Package that will bring $285 million of infrastructure investment in the Tri-Cities. The transportation package success and other government affairs activities resulted in our Chamber receiving the Advocate of the Year Award from the Association for Washington Business (AWB).

The membership team of Elisabeth and Chad has tirelessly worked to increase the Chamber Membership, making more and more companies aware of how much our Chamber has to offer. Those efforts have resulted in achieving the new member growth goals that were established for them at the beginning of the year. Elisabeth and Chad understand that Members are the fuel that drives our Chamber.

Lori and Austin teamed to launch the Economic Gardening program that since has gained attention from business and government groups across our State. The first two Tri-Cities companies have completed their Economic Gardening engagement with outstanding results.

The entire staff continues to be a driving force behind the Tri-Cities Branding effort. The success of the Bolder, Brighter, Better, branding effort is so important to our Region. The Chamber staff gets it and is moving the effort forward.

Lastly, Lori Mattson’s leadership ensures all of these activities drive a cohesive strategy for the Chamber. This year Lori and her staff have started to bring to life the Horizon Initiative created by Association of Chamber Commerce Executives. Simply put, the Horizon Initiative is a superb road map for the chamber of the future and these visionary concepts were explored at the Chamber’s recent Board Retreat. The success of these efforts is indicated by the formation of the Chamber’s Regional Affairs Committee that will create the Chamber’s vision for our Region.

So thank you for all you do. My appreciation really cannot be fully expressed.

Our Board of Directors Annual Retreat was held at Anthology Event

Venue on Friday, October 2nd. During the retreat, the Board of Directors and Chamber staff reviewed the ACCE Horizon Initiative and began to outline new strategies for the Chamber to prepare for influences impacting chambers in the next 10 years.

CH2M HILL and HAPO

Community Credit Union

(Executive level), and

EnergySolutions and Umpqua Bank,

(Corporate level) recently renewed their

memberships with the Chamber.

Our recent “Leadership

in Action” Business

Development University

presented by Christy Lambert was

attended by 29 small business owners and

representatives.

The Regional Chamber is an official “Small Business Saturday 2015 Neighborhood Champion.” In

2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need — getting more customers. The day encourages people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The single day has grown into a powerful movement, and more people are taking part than ever before. This year, the big day is November 28.

Thanks to the continued generosity of Washington River Protection Solutions,

34 member businesses received funds of up to $2,000 to purchase equipment, software, training, and websites to grow their business. 2015 marks the 5th year of this impactful program and a total of $150,000 in gifts to small businesses!

Two of the five businesses selected for our Economic Gardening Pilot Program

have completed their engagement with the National Center for Economic Gardening. Our final three companies have been selected and will begin their engagement within the next few weeks. Economic Gardening is a trademarked “grow from within” strategy and the funding for the program is provided by Battelle and Gesa Credit Union.

We partnered with the U. S. Chamber to host a panel discussion

about the Department of Labor’s proposed Fiduciary Rule featuring a policy expert from Washington, DC and local small business owners.

The Tri-City Regional Chamber Board, volunteers and staff are

focused on delivering value to our members. Every Chamber

strategy, program and service is created specifically to provide

positive results and bring credit to our region. Here’s a look into

recent activities, plans and results.

Pictured left to right: Ron Boninger, Board Chair, Tri-City Regional Chamber; Derek Johnson, Richland Store Manager, Brandon Johnson, Vice President, Adam Johnson, Kennewick Store Manager, Tri-Cities Battery; Lori Mattson, President & CEO, Tri-City Regional Chamber

The Tri-City Regional Chamber is pleased to announce Tri-Cities Battery as the September “Outstanding Member of the Month.” A member since 1990, Tri-Cities Battery Inc., is a proud, family-owned business started by Dale Johnson in 1971. The business at that time was one location in Pasco, concentrating on the sale and installation of batteries - both retail and wholesale.

Today, Gerald and Pat Johnson (second generation) and their sons Brandon, Derek and Adam (third generation) continue to operate Tri-Cities Battery with Grandfather Dale’s ethics, customer service and pride. In 2013, they played an important role in the development of Tread Town Playground. A playground located in Pasco, which is made of 400 repurposed tires.

Today Tri-Cities Battery has three locations and has changed the scope of business from just battery sales & installations to complete automotive repair, alignments tires & wheels.

Thank you, Tri-Cities Battery for all that you do and for your support of the Regional Chamber. We are proud to recognize you as the November Member of the Month!
