2017 MEMBERSHIP GOAL IS 693
As of this morning 11/18/2016 Department has our membership numbers as 526 or 75.9%. The Early Bird session is now closed. A note to new members (all 24 of you) your new 2017 card shows NEW as your membership number. This is because those numbers are assigned by National which may take a couple of months. If you need a membership number, (i.e. filling out a Riders Application) please wait until you get your first Le-gion Magazine or Department Dispatch edition and above your name on the address label will appear a nine (9) digit number that will begin with 24xxxxxxx. This will be your membership number, and you can white out new and print in your number if you so de-sire. Your next membership renewal card will have the number printed on it. Thanks to all members in our recruiting effort and remember New Members Make The Post Work and we are still 167 short of our goal.

Greetings: Membership Update: We have 203 of our 284 members re-newed. In addition we have added 24 new members. Thank you to those that renewed and Welcome to our new mem-bers. BRUNCH WITH SANTA is our next event. It will be held on Sunday December 18th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. This event will lead into the Auxiliary's Children’s Christmas Party that will start at 1:00 pm. We need volunteers for the brunch. The more help we have the more fun for everyone it will be. Let’s work to make this a great start to the Christmas Holi-day for our families at the Cicero American Legion. Please respond to the SAL email [email protected], if you can help. Sons of The American Legion should be a source of pride for our members. We should serve as volunteers to assist older veterans, and participate in patriotic holiday obser-vances and other civic functions, not only to help expand the post’s representation but to also develop an awareness of our purpose “to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism.” One of the ways to serve is to volunteer: SAL members find it rewarding to serve as a volunteer at a hospital or medical center in the VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) program. SAL Supported Bingo is the third Wednesday of every month. December 21st is our next supported bingo event. Please find it in your heart to help out, we need kitchen, cash register and serving window volunteers from 4-7pm. Email [email protected], if you can help. Thank you in advance!
**Reminder** SAL monthly general membership meetings are held at 6:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Our next meeting is December 27th. Come out and get to know the SAL fami-ly and be involved. Dinner will be served to all in attend-ance. I hope to see many of you at the meeting.

From the Chaplain: Dear members, You are in distress when a loved one becomes ill, have sur-gery, get injured or passes away, that is understandable, but please let the Chaplain know as soon as possible so our Legion can take appropriate action. I check the obituaries each morn-ing, but if no mention of military service or being a Legion mem-ber, the family may think we don't care which is never the case. Please email or call Chaplain Heidenreich with infor-mation at [email protected] or 315-345-0702 or 315-458-3895.

Greetings fellow Legion members, The riding season is all but over and we have met all our obligations. The veteran's Day Parade and Ex-po was our last official act for the year. Thanks to all who showed up and participated, we gave the Cpl. Kyle Schneider Foundation a check for $500 at this event. This has been a great season and we stepped up to plate in many ways. As this newsletter is the December issue, we will be entering that magical season that everyone enjoys, especially the Malls. As we observe Christmas please remember the reason for the season. Also take a mi-nute to remember the many men and women serving in foreign lands and in harms way, that will not get to be with their families for the Holidays. Keep these brave people in your prayers, and remember their fami-lies here at home, especially those that have an empty chair at their table from the ultimate sacrifice. From the Legion Riders, myself and my family, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the very best for the New Year. Bruce

From Governor Cuomo: This is the season of giving thanks — for our family, our health, and many other blessings we enjoy. Today we pause to show our gratitude to all U.S. military veterans who selflessly put the needs of others before their own by answering the call of duty. Nearly 900,000 veterans make New York their home, and I know that you join my administration in valuing their sacrifice not just today – but eve-ry day. You should know that we are working hard to provide these men and women with the highest level of outreach and support possible. Just in this past year, we have: Launched a new New York State Veterans mobile app that connects veterans and their families to jobs, housing, healthcare and education;
Helped New York veterans and their families obtain more than $80 million in VA benefits;
Exempted more than 485,000 veterans from local property taxes;
Certified more businesses as Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Businesses, bringing the total number of companies to more than 260 with $28 million in State contracts awarded; and
Recognized 44,000 veterans with a special "veterans" designation on their driver’s license or non-driver’s ID card.
Click here to learn more about how we're supporting our veterans and their families. From defending our nation abroad to protecting the people here at home, the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces are second to none — and they are our heroes.
Wishing you a Blessed Christmas
