When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 32-20 (.615).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has beenaccomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournamentcrowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league oppositionand enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Did You Know?Junior forward Lijah Thompson finished the 2010-11 cam-paign having converted 55.5 percent (106-for-191) of his at-tempts from the floor, a success rate that led the NortheastConference. Thompson became the fourth Colonial in schoolhistory to lead the circuit in field goal percentage and thefirst since former guard Tony Lee (2004-08) paced the NECby shooting 59.3 percent from the field during his senior sea-son in 2006-07. The two other Colonials to lead the NEC infield goal percentage are former forward Steve Napper(1995-98), who shot 66.2 percent in 1997-98, and former for-ward Chaz McCrommon (2000-05), who converted 52.3 per-cent of his shots during the 2003-04 campaign.

Scouting the Hawks - Monmouth enters Saturday’s game against Robert Morris with an overallrecord of 4-16, including 2-5 in the Northeast Conference, and is coming off a 68-50 victoryover Saint Francis (Pa.) (1/19/12) at The Mac. Against the Red Flash, senior forward Mike MyersKeitt came off the bench to lead the Hawks with 17 points and also grabbed a team-high sevenrebounds, while junior guards Dion Nesmith and Jesse Steele added 14 and 12 points, respec-tively. Steele is the only player for Monmouth averaging in double figures scoring, producing12.0 points per game while leading the Hawks in three-pointers (36) and assists (78). MyersKeitt averages 9.7 points per contest, while the leading rebounder is junior forward Ed Waite,who pulls down an average of 5.9 caroms per game.
Monmouth Head Coach - King Rice (North Carolina ’92), a former point guard under Hall ofFame Head Coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, was named the head men’sbasketball coach at Monmouth March 30, 2011. Rice is the fifth head coach in the history of theMonmouth program. A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Rice spent five seasons as an assistant coachat Vanderbilt from 2006 to 2011 prior to his hiring with the Hawks.
RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris used a 20-5 run over the final 7:46 of regulation, Jan. 19, topull out a 67-55 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson at Stratis Arena. Trailing, 50-47, after a jumperfrom George Goode, RMU held the Knights to just one field goal in the final six minutes of playto help pull out the win. The deciding surge was started by junior forward Lijah Thompson,who scored six straight points, including a pair of free throws with 5:28 to play that gave RobertMorris the lead for good, 53-52. After a Melquan Bolding turnover by Fairleigh Dickinson, fresh-man forward Lucky Jones buried a three-pointer to push RMU’s edge to 56-52, and less than aminute later his jumper pushed the advantage for the Colonials to 58-52. Bolding hit a three-pointer with 3:11 to pull FDU within five, 60-55, but redshirt junior guard Velton Jones scoredseven straight points, including a three-pointer from the top of the key with 1:44 to go to helpseal the victory. Robert Morris jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the contest as four different Colo-nials scored. FDU’s first field goal of the contest didn’t come until the 14:09 mark of the firsthalf, when Mathias Sielund came off the bench to hit a three-pointer. The trifecta sparked theKnights, who put together a 10-4 spurt to close within 16-14 after a three-pointer by LonnieRobinson. The Colonials answered with seven straight points, including four from Thompsonand a three-point play by Velton Jones, to open up a 23-14 advantage. Bolding then took overfor Fairleigh Dickinson, scoring 12 points in the final 4:48 of the first half, the last two of whichgave the Knights a 26-25 edge with 52 seconds left before the break. Lucky Jones would helpgive RMU a one-point advantage, 27-26, with a layup off an offensive rebound with 3.3 secondsremaining before intermission. Velton Jones took home game-high honors in scoring with 22points and also added six assists and three steals, while Lucky Jones had one of the most pro-ductive games of his young career, tying a career high with 16 points while adding nine re-bounds and four steals. Thompson added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench as RobertMorris held a 26-18 edge in points in the paint and a 25-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Against Quinnipiac (1/12/12), Jones became the fourth Colo-nial in school history to go a perfect 10-for-10 at the stripe at the Charles L. Sewall Cen-ter. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth ranked 10th in the Northeast Conferencein free-throw percentage (.768) and is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season record for free throws. The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson(1992-95), who established the mark as a senior in 1994-95. Jones is on pace to finishwith 164 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Saturday’s tilt ranked seventh all-timeat RMU in career free throws made with 296.
Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last five sea-sons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since thebeginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 80-13 (.860) whenthe Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 76-11 (.874) markwhen outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMUhas posted a record of 24-7 (.774) when outrebounding its opponent, including a markof 10-3 (.769) in 2011-12. RMU travels to Monmouth Saturday leading the circuit in re-bounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.3 caroms per contest. Over their last14 contests, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +7.1, including six times over thatstretch posting a rebounding margin of at least +13.
The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most con-sistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in2011-12. Johnson has grabbed 97 boards in 18 games despite missing the last two gameswith a thumb injury, an average of 5.4 per game that ranks second for the Colonials. Theprogram’s active leading rebounder with 485 career caroms, Johnson is looking to be-come the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first sinceformer Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 cam-paign.
30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion ofthe 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when vis-iting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morriscame in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC(3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 20 gamesof the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.4 free-throw attempts per contest.

Jones hasalso proven to be an adept free-throw shooter in his first season at Robert Morris. Onthe 2011-12 campaign he owns a conversion rate of 84.8 percent (56-for-66) at the chalk,which ranks third in the Northeast Conference. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three sea-sons, as the redshirt junior enters Saturday’s game owning the longest active streak forgames played. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.
The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.
The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still topsin the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.07 three-pointers percontest, just ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has also averaged 7.06 three-pointers a game.In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, whileredshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48.
