The Colonials will look to improve upon a 17-17-5 record from the previous season which included a 13-9-5 record in Atlantic Hockey. After a seventh place finish in conference play, the Colonials would win their first-ever postseason contests as a member of the AHA as they won a best-of-three series against American International. After the loss of ten seniors, Robert Morris will look to follow up a pair of .500 or better seasons with a young nucleus. The departure of eight forwards from the 2011-2012 roster has created a scenario where there will be at least five forwards in the lineup that were not with the Colonials last year. Returning only one of their top four scorers from a season ago, RMU was selected to finish eighth in the Atlantic Hockey Association Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Even with this prediction, the Colonials did receive one first-place vote. The strength of the team will be in the defensive zone where the squad returns seven defensemen and goaltender Eric Levine who split last season with Brooks Ostergard who has since graduated. Musket Shots u In the team’s first two seasons as a member of Atlantic Hockey, they have posted a conference record of 13-9-5 in each season. u Goaltender Eric Levine returns for his senior season after recording a .921 save percentage while averaging 28.25 saves per game. u Robert Morris finished the 2011-2012 season with the nation’s best penalty kill at 89.9 percent. u In their ninth season, the Colonials are playing the Quinnipiac Bobcats for the eighth time; the only season the two teams did not meet was during the 2010-2011 season. u Senior forward Adam Brace is the leading scorer (29 games played, 14 goals, 9 assists, 23 points) returning to the team for the upcoming seaon. Scouting the Bobcats Coming off of a 2-1 upset victory over then #15 ranked Maine, Quinnipiac rose to #18 in the most recent USCHO Poll. With goals by Travis St. Denis and Jordan Samuels-Thomas, the Bobcats rallied back from allowing the first goal less than five minutes into the contest. Forward Jeremy Langlois registered as- sists on both of the goals for Quinnipiac. Goaltender Eric Hartzell stopped 31 of the 31 Maine shots in the win. The Bobcats are coming off of a 20-14-6 record in the 2011-2012 season that included a 9-8-5 record in ECAC Hockey that included junior Connor Jones being named to the All-ECAC Third Team. Freshman Matthew Peca was named to the All-ECAC All-Rookie Team as well following the season. All-Time Series vs. Quinnipiac The Colonials will be looking for their fifth win against Quinnipiac in this upcoming two-game series. Last season, Robert Morris hosted a pair of games against the Bobcats in which the two teams split the series. In fact, the last three series in which the two teams faced-off have all resulted in a split. The three series before that were all sweeps by Quininpiac (2005-2006 through 2007-2008). The only time the Colonials were unbeaten in a series with Quinnipiac was in the program’s first season (2004-2005) when the team tied and then beat the Bobcats. When the two teams square-off in the month of October, Robert Morris is 2-6-0. 2012-13 COLONIALS ROBERT MORRIS HOCKEY

Last Time Out - W, 10-4 RMU vs. Wilfrid Laurier

Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team opened up their season with an exhibition victory against Wilfrid Laurier by a score of 10-4 on Sunday evening.

The game did not start off so well for the Colonials as just 14 seconds into the game they allowed the Golden Hawks to score. Just over six minutes later, sophomore forward Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) would score his first of two goals on the night to tie the game at 1-1. With just under five minutes remaining in the first, senior forward Zach Her-vato (Stittsville, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) would net his first goal en route to a hat-trick on the evening. With 34 seconds remaining before the first intermission, junior forward Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) would redirect a shot past the Wilfrid Laurier net minder to put RMU up 3-1 after the first period of play.

In the second period of action, the two teams would combine for six goals and forty penalty minutes. Wilfrid Laurier would bring the Robert Morris lead to one as it scored less than three minutes into the period. The Colonials would quickly regain their two-goal lead as Jacklin would score his second goal of the game to put the team up 4-2. Just over the halfway mark of the game, RMU would increase their lead to three as freshman forward Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) beat the Golden Hawk goalie. Wilfrid Laurier would pick up their third goal of the game at 13:19 of the second period while on the power-play. The Colonials would respond with two power-play goals of their own to close out the second period. The first came off of the stick of Hervato during a 5-on-3 advantage for RMU. The second man-advantage goal came from the stick of sophomore forward Jeff Jones (Revelstoke, British Columbia / Merritt Centennials) with 37 seconds remaining in the period.

The final period saw the Colonials reach the 10-goal mark with three more tallies. The team’s eighth goal came courtesy of junior forward Mac Roy (Chilliwack, British Columbia / Alabama-Huntsville) as he scored at the 1:26 mark of the frame. Hervato would seal his hat-trick at the 13:16 mark with a long wrist-shot that beat the Golden Hawk goaltender. The Colonials tenth goal was the only goal scored by a defenseman as freshman Chase Golightly (Temecula, Calif. / Prince George Spruce Kings) notched the mark with 52 seconds remaining in the contest. The scoring was not done with however as Wilfrid Laurier picked up a late goal with just eight seconds remaining to make the final score 10-4.

Robert Morris outshot the Golden Hawks by a 41-13 margin as only five of the 21 skaters did not register a puck on net. The Colonials went 3-for-8 with the man-advantage in the game while the team allowed one goal during their five penalty kill attempts. Forwards David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canadiens) and Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius)each contributed three assists in the contest as only six players did not register a point. Senior goaltender Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) started the game for RMU and gave way to freshman Terry Shafer (Penfield N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) at the beginning of the third period.

Last Meeting - L, 1-4RMU at Quinnipiac

Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Quinnipiac men’s hockey team scored a pair of empty-net goals late on Saturday night to hand Robert Morris a 4-1 loss and spoil the Colonials chance at a series sweep. Junior forward Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius) tallied his second goal of the season for Robert Morris.

The Colonials (2-3-0 overall, 0-1-0 Atlantic Hockey) maintained their strong showing in special teams situations – highlighted by an 8-for-8 performance on the penalty kill. Robert Morris has now successfully killed 23-straight opportunities to open the season. The Colonials’ power-play unit was 1-for-5 on the night.

The Bobcats (6-2-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) jumped ahead at 6:34 of the first period when Connor Jones tallied his third goal of the year to put Quinnipiac up 1-0. After Jones won a draw in the Bobcats’ offensive zone and found Mike Glaicar on the point, the blue-liner’s slap shot hit the post on the initial attempt, but Jones – streaking to the net – found the loose puck and snuck the follow up past senior goalie Brooks Ostergard (Chargin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers).

The Colonials wouldn’t wait long to even the scoreboard. After the Bobcats were whistled for a pair of penalties to put RMU on a 5-on-3 advantage, Brace found pay dirt at 8:25 with his second tally of the season. Senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) set up the play, finding junior defenseman Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners) on the point. Blazek only got a piece of the puck on his attempt, but the puck went right to Brace, who found the back of the net. The game wouldn’t stay even long, though, as the Bobcats notched a short-handed goal less than 30 seconds later from Matthew Peca. Jeremy Langlois tallied an assist on the goal at 8:52.

The score would remain at 2-1 for the majority of the night as the two teams battled back and forth for the next 40 minutes of action without a tally. Still down by a goal late in the contest, RMU would pull Ostergard with just over a minute to go in favor of the extra attacker, however the Bobcats capitalized on the empty net with a pair of insurance goals to seal the win.

Ostergard (0-3-0) had a notable game in the losing effort, stopping 38 of the 40 shots he faced, including several that kept RMU’s penalty-killing unit un-blemished. Dan Clarke (4-1-0) picked up the win for Quinnipiac after stopping 17-of-18.

Quotes for the Notes - A word with CoACh sChooley

On the exhibitiOn game versus Wilfrid laurier.....

“We got a chance to play all of our guys; we got to see what our eleven new players brought to the team and how they were able to adjust themselves to the college hockey level. Our retruners played very well, as did our freshmen; we played with a lot of energy and a lot of passion that we have been lacking in the past. It was good to play and compete against somebody else other than ourselves in practice.”

On the upcOming series With Quinnipiac.....

“Quinnipiac is a very good hockey team, they are nationally ranked and we we have to be ready to play, especially on the road. They have a tremendous group of forwards and a couple good goaltenders. We just have to keep working on our game, we can’t worry about what the other teams are doing. After this weekend we will know a lot more about our hockey team.”

2012-13 COLONIALS ROBERT MORRIS HOCKEY

Page 7: Men's Hockey Game Notes @ Quinnipiac

Head Coach Derek SchooleyHead coach Derek Schooley believes that his team is ready to regularly compete with other top teams around the nation as his previous teams have shown. Schooley’s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athletics with some major upsets in the past few seasons. In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off then-No.2 Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In 2007-2008, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with an upset of four time national champion and 8th ranked Bos-ton University. However Schooley’s signature wins came in 2009-10 season with a sweep against then-No. 1 ranked Miami (OH).

Schooley, 42, has been a college hockey coach for 16 seasons. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris History. Since taking over the RMU program, Schooley has coached 36 players who have ascended from the program and signed a contract with a professional hockey team. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent four years at the Air Force Academy as an Assistant Coach before spending one season at Air Force as Associate Head Coach. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season.

He started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

The ninth year head coach enters the 2012-13 season with a record of 104-142-36 in eight seasons at Robert Morris. Schooley led the Colonials to 17 wins and a second-consecutive season with a winning percentage of at least .500 during the 2011-12 campaign. RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey while boasting the best penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed off 89.9 percent of their penalties. Schooley coached Cody Crichton to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and Tyson Wilson to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school record 18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey Association and hosted its first ever postseason game in the first round of the AHA Tournament. Schooley coached Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Atlantic Hockey first-team and helped Urban to All-American honors from the CollegeHockeyBlog.com. Schooley also coached goaltender Brooks Ostergard on the third-team all conference honors.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena (former home to the Pittsburgh Penguins), Schooley led the Colonials to their first win against a team ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris defeated Miami (OH) in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase. The Colonials followed the win up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio and picked up a sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up.

During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley’s student-athlete’s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Oster-gard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4, once again earn-ing a third-place finish in the CHA. The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program. Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008 CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to college hockey’s most outstanding player. Senior forward, Joel Gasper was named the CHA Student-Athlete of the Year. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st Team; Chris Margott 2nd Team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All Rookie Team).

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 2006-07 while placing their first member on a CHA all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colo-nials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime.

In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place finish in the CHA included a win at Schooley’s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals. Once again, the Colo-nials placed a member on the CHA All-Rookie Team (Chris Margott).

In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record. Schooley and his staff would win their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colo-nials placed two players, Jace Buzek and Chris Kaufman, on the CHA All-Rookie team.

A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tallied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Associa-tion (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 1993-94 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22. Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington (W. Va.) Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich. They are the proud parents of Kaitlyn, Brendan and Taylor.
