of hard work. Here we are, in 2017, celebratingour tenth anniversary.

We have just begun. We have a long way togo, but we’re here to continue to push ourmission to encourage the employment ofwomen in the trucking industry, promote theiraccomplishments and address obstacles thatmight keep women from succeeding. The mission has never changed and will continueto drive our efforts into the future.

We’ve got a lot of exciting things plannedfor you, our members. From a certificationprogram to better-designed truck cabs to moreamenities and safety at truck stops to, if mypersonal goal is realized, a doll that drives abig truck!

Your support is valuable, and we can’t dothis without you. Thanks for believing in usand our mission. The next ten years will beeven better.

Ten years ago the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) did not exist. Ten years ago, there was no Scholarship Foundation, no GirlScout Transportation Patch, no WIT Index, noconference dedicated to empowering women. No one recognized our female drivers, a distinguished woman in logistics or an influentialwoman in trucking. Nothing.

Ten years ago, there were very few womenat trucking industry events. The few womenwho attended conferences and meetings madea point to connect and reach out to one anotherfor networking and support.

Ten years ago, an idea was born. Twelvepowerful, passionate and dedicated womenjoined to create an organization focused solelyon increasing the number of women employedin the trucking industry. With the help of adedicated attorney who believed in our mission,we filed the paperwork to become a nonprofitassociation and received our IRS determinationletter.

Ten years ago, our very first reception attract-ed a few interested men and women whomunched on cookies and sipped coffee as theyconsidered the concept of an organization created to attract and retain more women asdrivers, managers and so much more.

It’s been an amazing decade of challenges, growth, frustration and elation as well as a lot

It’s a proven rule in life: “Where we’vecome from defines who we are today andwho we likely will become tomorrow.” Thisapplies to individual human beings—and toorganizations like the Women In Trucking Association (WIT). The reality of this rule isunderscored in this special edition of Redefiningthe Road magazine, which celebrates the 10-year anniversary of WIT.

Reflecting on Yesterday. In this edition,WIT founder Ellen Voie reflects on the amazingjourney of the association since its beginning, and a feature article highlights the manyachievements that have propelled WIT’s mission forward. Much has been accomplishedthese past 10 years as a result of tirelessefforts of volunteers, members and staff—from encouraging the employment of womenand measuring progress made through theWIT Index to recognizing accomplishments of female drivers and professional women inthe industry.

Celebrating today. This edition quickly reminds us of the power of relationship-building and best practices. In the cover story,“Secrets to Successful Mentoring,” you’ll learnhow to benefit from a mentor, coach, and/orsponsor relationship in your career. You’ll hearfirst-hand from many women who have beensuccessful on the giving and receiving end ofthese relationships. You’ll also read about theimportance of a strong wellness program atSaia and a strong training program at Ryder—best practices that are driving success at thesecompanies.

Planning For tomorrow. The feature story,“Attracting Millennials: How Can TransportationCompanies Compete for New Talent,” outlineswhat millennials value in life and how to usethat information to attract and manage thenext generation of talent. “Current IndustryPerspectives: Top Issues for Trucking” exploreskey challenges such as capacity, regulations, infrastructure and volatile diesel costs—andtheir impact on strategy and operations todayand tomorrow.

So reflect on where we as an associationhave come from, celebrate where the industryis today, and plan for what we’re likely to accomplish tomorrow. Cheers to the WomenIn Trucking Association. Here’s to wishing you and your members more success in thenext 10 years!

Mentorship can be a powerful tool—bothfor companies and their employees. Benefitsfor mentees include increased self-confidence,a fresh perspective on their abilities and careerguidance, to name just a few. Mentors them-selves have the opportunity to “give back,”build credibility, and gain personal satisfaction. And companies benefit from improved pro-ductivity, engagement and retention, accordingto a study by Wharton School of Business atthe University of Pennsylvania.

Mentoring can be particularly valuable forwomen in the workforce. Working with a men-tor can help to overcome gender barriers suchas lack of access to opportunities, networks,

and advocates, explains Alyse Nelson of VitalVoices Global Partnership in a recent blog postfor Fortune.

In the transportation industry, mentoringcan be helpful, not only for women in man-agement, but also for female drivers. “Femaledrivers can feel outnumbered,” says BrookeMosely, Training Specialist at Prime Inc. “Theyneed to know they’re being heard. Mentoringprograms help them to feel more comfortableand know that somebody is advocating forthem.”

Mentoring is also a valuable employee re-cruiting tool when it comes to millennials. Infact, a PGi study reports that 75 percent ofmillennials see mentoring as crucial to theircareer success. And according to the 2016Deloitte Millennial Survey, millennials who areintending to stay with their organization for

more than five years are twice as likely tohave a mentor. (For more on millennials, readthe article on page 12.)

Even with all of its advantages, mentorshipis surprisingly uncommon for women. In fact,63 percent of businesswomen surveyed neverhad a mentor, according to a study conductedby Development Dimensions International(DDI), a human resources consulting firm. What’s holding them back? Possibilities includethe low ratio of female managers to entry-level positions, lack of time, a reluctance toask, and concerns about competition.

The good news? It can’t hurt to ask. In fact,71 percent of female executives surveyed re-ported that they always accept invitations tobe formal mentors at work, according to theDDI study.

establishing a good mentorrelationship

At the Women In Trucking (WIT) Association’s2016 Accelerate! Conference & Expo in No-vember, a panel of experts shared their insightson successful mentoring. Panelists includedBrooke Mosley, Training Specialist at PrimeInc.; Anne Miner, President, The DunveganGroup Ltd.; Beth Potratz, President and CEOof Drive My Way; and Donna Trujillo, an inde-pendent consultant. WIT President and CEOEllen Voie served as moderator.

Mentoring comes in all shapes and sizes, panelists say, ranging from formal corporateprograms to informal relationships over a cupof coffee. Mentors can be women or men, from within your company or external, from

Anne Miner:“Choose somebodyworthy of you.”(clients, partners,mentors, etc.)

donna trujillo:“Surround yourselfwith people whobring you up.”

Brooke Mosely:“You have one lifeand it’s not very long.If you need to make a change, make itnow.”

Beth Potratz:“You alone have thepower to create thefuture you want to be in.”

ellen Voie:“When in doubt, assume good intent.”

“A great mentor will be prepared to listenand take time to understand what you wantto accomplish,” Miner says. “They should alsohold you accountable. You must be willing tohear what they say and take action. They’renot there to fix the problem for you.”

“Choose someone who sees a part of youthat you don’t see—who can help to explorethe core of who you are,” Potratz suggests. “Ithelps to find someone you can feel vulnerablewith. Having those exploratory conversationswithout judgment can be invaluable.”

Getting in GearTo identify an appropriate mentor, it helps

to have an action plan. “You need to knowwhat your goals are,” Potratz advises.

Trujillo agrees. “Start by thinking aboutwhat you want to work on with them,” shesays. “Choose someone you connect with whowill have your best interest at heart. Thentake the initiative. Tell them what you want toachieve and why you chose them as yourmentor.”

Miner recommends holding a preliminarymeeting to set goals and establish expectations.Determine how often you will meet. Establisha “judgment-free” policy, and request (don’tpresume) confidentiality. Identify the protocolfor when one of you wants to disengage.

any industry, etc. And it is wise to have multiplementors throughout your career.

Before seeking a mentor, it is important to understand this unique role and how itcompares with coaching or sponsorship, forexample.

Coaching is typically a short-term processfocused on helping you to learn a skill, overcomea challenge or improve your performance.Mentoring is a longer-term, more holistic ap-proach designed to guide you through a sig-nificant transition at work or offer supportthroughout your career. Sponsorship takes thementor relationship to the next level. Usuallyan influential, senior-level figure, the sponsoracts as your advocate, promoting you directlyto ensure that you are considered for job op-portunities and special assignments.

Miner summarizes the distinction: “A coachtalks to you, a mentor talks with you, and asponsor talks about you.”

All three of these relationships are importantfor women in the workplace, panelists agree. The key is to understand which relationship inthis continuum best meets your needs.

Finding the Right FitIf you determine that a mentor is the best

option for you, choose carefully. “Being a men-tor is a big responsibility, and not everybody’scut out to be one,” Potratz points out.

What makes a good mentor? Panelists iden-tified several key characteristics.

10 Redefining the Road Edition 1 | 2017

continued from page 9 Moving onHow do you know when it’s time to call it

quits? When you’ve accomplished your goalor determined that you are not getting some-thing out of the relationship, the panelistsagreed.

“Mentorship actually can be counterpro-ductive when it is not mutually beneficial,”Potratz says.

If the relationship is not working, don’t beafraid to make a change. “For our driver men-tors, we are always careful about making theright match,” says Mosely. “If it’s not a goodfit, we make a switch. This isn’t Match.com!”

“It’s helpful to have a variety of mentors,”Trujillo elaborates. “The person who helpedyou get to where you are today might nothave the insights to get you where you wantto go tomorrow.”

Ready to Roll? “Mentorship can play a vital role in helping

to move women forward in the transportationindustry,” says WIT’s Voie. “Women In Truckingencourages women to actively seek out mentors—and serve as mentors for others. If we allhelp each other, we’ll continue to increasethe number of women in leadership positionsand women drivers.” n

By 2020, millennials areexpected to represent 40percent of the workforce.Born between 1980 and1995, this generation isover 80 million strong andabout 50 percent female. As a rule, these womenare educated, ambitious, confident and career-focused—undoubtedly apowerful asset for trans-portation and logisticscompanies.

With a significant driver shortage and dearthof women in leadership positions, the trans-portation industry needs to tap into this po-tential workforce, but this new generation ofworkers is not looking for business as usual.

At the Women In Trucking (WIT) Association’s2016 Accelerate! Conference & Expo in No-vember, panelists explored the topic of mil-lennial workers and what the industry can doto attract them. The group included BrianMcMahon, Finance Analyst, Fleet Advantage;Sarah Wulf, Recruiting Manager, Veriha Trucking;Michelle Richard, Vice President of HumanResources, Saia Inc.; Kelsey Nelson, a studentat University of Wisconsin– Superior; and mod-erator Andreea Crisan, WIT Board Memberand Chief Operating Officer and Executive VicePresident, Andy Transport.

What is the Millennial WorkforceLooking For?

Twenty-three-year-old Nelson graduated inDecember 2016 with a degree in transportationand logistics management and just joined J.B.Hunt as an Operations Supervisor. When de-ciding where to apply for jobs, she said shetook a variety of factors into consideration, including pay, location, corporate culture, ben-efits, company size, career opportunities, andmentorship programs.

Nelson’s wish list reflects key priorities ofher generation (see Millennial Snapshot side-bar). Panelists offered a variety of insights tohelp transportation companies address manyof these issues.

Corporate CultureMillennials want to work for companies

with a good image and reputation. Beingethical and honest is simply table stakes, panelists agree.

“A paycheck is not enough. It comes downto how you treat people, how supportive youare,” Richard says. “Most drivers get their jobsfrom word of mouth. If drivers have a goodexperience, they can bring in more drivers.”

Quality of LifeWork-life balance is a high priority for mil-

lennials. Wulf recommends that companieshighlight ways in which they help employees—whether it’s the fact that their drivers arehome every night, offer programs to supportdriver’s families or install Direct TV in trucks.

This may involve a shift in perspective,Crisan suggests. “We need to change our vo-cabulary,” she advises. “Drivers must becomeour customers,” she advises.

Career Progression“Studies show that 36 percent of millennials

will change jobs in one to three years,” Wulfexplains. “We need to give them the opportunityto change jobs within our own organization.”

When it comes to recruiting strategies,Wulf says companies need to work more onwhat they’re going to do for drivers—let themknow potential career paths and create opportunities to help them move forward. AtVeriha Trucking, for example, a successfuldriver might become a “Road Scholar” andthen move on to become a trainer. This opportunity to advance appeals to millennials’desire for career progression.

To satisfy a popular millennial desire to forself-employment, Crisan suggests highlightingthe opportunity to become an independentcontractor. Since many millennials are eagerto work with or own a start-up company, sheasks, “Why not encourage them to developapps or offer services that solve industry is-sues?”

“It’s all about creating opportunities forpeople,” Richard says. “Don’t let them becomestagnant. Give them the chance to move—horizontally and vertically.”

technology expectationsMillennials take technology for granted.

From mobile phones to social media, they liveon a steady diet of digital information.

Transportation companies need to leveragetechnology wherever possible, panelists agree.A strong social media presence and up-to-date website are minimum requirements, Wulfsays. Richard recommends highlighting howthe industry uses technology to make a driver’sjob easier and safer. McMahon challengescompanies to be creative. “Get drivers onSnapchat to spread the word about careers intransportation,” he suggests.

Roadblocks to Attracting MillennialsThe transportation industry’s biggest chal-

lenge in attracting millennials may be publicmisconceptions about the industry, panelistscautioned.

“When people think of the trucking industry, they still think of ‘Smokey and the Bandit,’”says Richard. “That’s not the end of the story, but we put a period on it. We need to repackageand repurpose how we think about drivingtrucks.”

Panelists agreed that news coverage of thetransportation industry tends to focus on negatives—accidents, pollution, etc. This is of

significant concern for millennials who typicallyare very motivated to do work that has apositive impact on the world around them.

“We need to talk about how safe drivingpractices are saving lives and showcase envi-ronmental stewardship,” says McMahon. “Forexample, programs like Women In Trucking’sride-alongs and the new Women In TruckingGirl Scout transportation patch are helping to highlight the good in the industry.” (Readmore about WIT ride-alongs on page 28.)

“Heavy industry regulation is also a stumblingblock,” Richard points out. “Particularly formillennials who tend to prefer flexibility. Thekey is to give them flexibility somewhere else.”

McMahon also stressed the need to promotethe scope of the trucking industry. “When Istarted working at Fleet Advantage, I saw somany different facets of the industry. I hadn’trealized what a progressive, forward-thinkingenvironment it was.”

“We need to make careers in our industrymore appealing,” Richard says. “When youthink about careers, you don’t automaticallythink about becoming a professional truckdriver. We tend to think about more mainstreamcareers like being a doctor or a lawyer, butcollege is not for everybody. Trucking is a good profession that pays good money.”

Snapshot of the Millennial Workforce

Millennial workers. Wondering what makes them tick?

Here’s a look at some of their top priorities.

www.WomenInTrucking.org 13

Today, most people accidentally fall intothe transportation industry, Crisan reflects. “Ifwe want millennials to choose transportation,we need to brand and package the industryaccordingly,” she says.

WIT is uniquely positioned to help withthat rebranding. Crisan explains, “Women InTrucking can help the industry attract morefemale millennials by celebrating, awardingand promoting successful women in the industry. Younger generations will follow their lead.” n

• Millennials have a different career mind-set than previous generations. An over-whelming 97 percent of men and womenmillennials say that work-life balance isimportant to them.

• That doesn’t mean that they plan to slack off. Female millennials rank career progression as the most attrac- tive employer trait. They are more likely to believe they can reach very top levelswith their current employer.

• Actually, 72 percent of millennials wouldprefer to be their own boss. They valuethe freedom and flexibility of a moreentrepreneurial environment.

• That being said, 88 percent of millen- nials prefer a collaborative environment. They’re seeking a work environmentwhere employees pull together for a shared purpose.

• Corporate image and reputation arecritical. Female millennials want to workfor companies that demonstrate socialand environmental responsibility.

• Feedback is important to millennials, andthey’re eager to develop relationshipswith mentors. In fact, 75 percent thinkmentorship is crucial for success.

• Global careers are high on the agenda.Seventy-one percent of female millennialswant to work outside their home countryduring their career.

• diversity is top of mind for this gener-ation. When surveyed, 85 percent ofwomen said that an employer’s policy on diversity, equality and workforceinclusion was important when decidingwhether or not to take a job.

weak but finished strong, with a steady climbin the load-to-truck ratios for vans, reefersand flatbeds starting in mid-2016. These ratiosrepresent the number of shipments postedfor every truck posted on DAT Load Boards, and are an indicator of spot-market demandrelative to capacity. Beginning in May, therebegan a steady climb in the load-to-truck ratiosfor vans. Reefers experienced a similar pattern, and flatbeds began their climb in August.

eLd Mandate: impact on CapacityIt’s now less than one year away. After

Dec. 17, 2017, nearly all heavy-duty trucksmust use electronic logging devices (ELDs) tolog their hours of service. While large carriershave been using ELDs for years, many smallfleets and owner-operators have yet to makethe switch from paper logs. Industry predictionsabout the reduction of capacity following themandate vary from 3 to 10 percent.

Some industry observers have wondered ifthe mandate will stay on track with the newTrump administration. While the possibility offacing unexpected regulation changes becomesa valid discussion when new leaders are elected,it’s highly unlikely the mandate will be rescindedgiven it was initiated by the Congress itselfeven with a strong Republican majority in theHouse. It’s unlikely that Congress would goagainst its own actions.

Considering the current market situationcoupled with a new Trump administration nowin place, there are a number of factors thatcould put a squeeze on productivity andcapacity in the coming months.

Strong demand for CapacityOf course, demand for capacity is a critical

factor for trucking—and it’s driven to a largedegree by manufacturing. According to theManufacturers Alliance for Productivity andInnovation, manufacturing still is in the recoveryphase of the economic cycle. Industrial man-ufacturing production must grow another 3percent to reach the pre-recession productionlevel achieved in 2007, which means a full re-covery is expected in the third quarter of thisyear. Non-high-tech manufacturing productionis approximately 5 percent below the pre-re-cession level and will not be fully recovereduntil the third quarter of next year.

Along with demand, what is a primaryfactor impacting capacity? The volume offreight that brokers are asked to move, alongwith the number of available trucks to movethat volume. In 2016, demand started out

trucking industry. Last year had relatively loose

capacity, but it likelywon’t be the same

this year.

More Scrutiny of Professional driversThere are several new regulations coming

down the pike from the Federal Motor CarrierSafety Administration (FMCSA) that could fur-ther reduce the number of drivers in an alreadydwindling pool. There are proposals to testdrivers for sleep apnea, test hair to check fordrug use, and create a database of driverswho have failed drug or alcohol testing. TheFMCSA also recently completed public commenton a speed-limiter rule that could force driversto drive slower than the posted speed limit in some states. A reduction of even a fewmiles per hour, multiplied by the thousandsof miles a driver logs each year, would impactproductivity.

infrastructure: Moving Forward?Trucking productivity decreases as traffic

congestion increases due to our lack of infra-structure investment. Unfortunately, highwayfunding bills have hit roadblocks in Congressand are often short-term measures that main-tain spending at current levels. Although theTrump administration has proposed significantincreases in spending, it’s not clear if Congresswill support this vision.

Underfunded infrastructure exaggeratesother trucking problems, such as the lack of parking for professional drivers to take their mandated breaks. This problem will onlyworsen with the ELD mandate, as electroniclogs won’t allow any wiggle room when driversneed to take their required rest breaks or stopfor the night.

Volatile diesel CostsPrices have risen 59 cents per gallon since

February of last year, and analysts predictprices to continue to rise throughout this year. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has announced they will reduce production this year and, at currentprices, there’s little incentive to increase U.S.oil production. Because the cost of fuel is oneof trucking companies’ top expenses, fleetsand owner-operators that are currently struggling financially could fail if prices risesignificantly. n

The Embassy Suites Dallas Convention Centerwas buzzing with excitement as the WomenIn Trucking Association (WIT) kicked off its Accelerate! Conference & Expo last November.More than 400 women and men attendedthe second annual event in Dallas—comingfrom across the country and as far away asNew Zealand.

The positive energy and supportive atmos-phere established the perfect environment totalk frankly about common challenges, sharecreative ideas and celebrate women in the in-dustry.

Attendees had the opportunity to checkout educational sessions on a wide range oftopics, including the outlook for the truckingmarket, making life on the road easier forwomen, building a personal brand and more.

They also learned from leading authoritiessuch as Scott Darling, Administrator of theFederal Motor Carrier Safety Administration(FMCSA), Dr. Valerie Young, author of The Imposter Syndrome, and Sara Laschever, anexpert in negotiation skill-building.

Over the course of the conference, severalkey themes emerged.

While women have many valuable qualitiesthat help them excel in the workplace, theyare more likely to experience self-doubt andshy away from negotiation than their malecounterparts. By recognizing these tendenciesand learning strategies to address them, womencan help to level the playing field. (Watch formore on negotiation in Redefining the Roadlater this year.)

The transportation industry needs to improve

public perception in order to attract a morediverse workforce. It is important to commu-nicate that it is a dynamic industry with awide variety of opportunities and that womenare building successful careers as professionaldrivers and leaders in the transportationindustry today.

Millennials and military veterans can bevaluable for companies seeking new talent. To appeal to millennials, recruiters shouldhighlight peak areas of interest, such as pro-fessional development, technology, social responsibility, etc. Veterans want to know how they fit in the organization and wherethey can add value. (Check out our article onattracting millennials to the industry on page12. Look for more on hiring veterans in ournext issue.)

In 1991, 19-year-old Ramona Hood took a receptionist position at Roberts Express, which was eventually acquired by FedEx. Shejust wanted to get a job, not realizing that, down the road, she would become a veteranin the industry.

Fast forward 25 years,Hood is vice president of Customer Operations,Transportation Logistics atGENCO, a FedEx company, and is the recipient of theprestigious Women In Truck-

ing (WIT) 2016 “Influential Woman in Trucking”award. The award recognizes women in theindustry who make or influence key decisions, have a proven record of responsibility, and mentor and serve as a role model toother women. The award was introduced in2010 as a way to honor female leaders intrucking and to attract and advance womenwithin the industry.

However, becoming a successful executiveand distinguished leader in transportation wasno easy feat, as there were many stops alongthe way. Starting from the ground up at FedExCustom Critical, Hood spent several years as areceptionist until she decided to take a chanceand pursue a leadership role. Once transferredto the operations department, Hood held nu-merous positions as she worked her way upto Senior Manager. As years passed in the de-partment, she decided it was time for a changeand took on the Senior Manager position inthe Sales Department.

While many women would be intimidatedat the thought of obtaining a bachelor’s degreein business management while working, Hoodwas eager to further her education at WalshUniversity. She was able to strike a balance be-tween work, education and home life, all whiledelivering results for her business unit.

But it doesn’t stop there. Hood continuedto rise through the ranks as she switched tothe FedEx Truckload Brokerage departmentand was promoted to the company’s executiveteam as Managing Director. Over the span ofeight years, Hood would help to drive revenuegrowth of more than 30 percent and con-tribute margin growth of more than 20 per-cent. She then would pursue her executivemaster’s degree in business administration atthe Weatherhead School of Management atCase Western Reserve University.

Today, through hard work, perseveranceand strategic leadership, Hood has receivednumerous honors, including Crain’s ClevelandBusiness 2016 “Women of Note” and SmartBusiness magazine’s “Smart Women 2016,” inaddition to the 2016 WIT award.

“Ramona Hood truly deserves the title ofthe 2016 Influential Woman in Trucking,” saysEllen Voie, WIT President and CEO. “She hasnot only advanced in her career to become a vice president in a large corporation, she hastaken the time to give back to her community. We are extremely proud to be able to recognize her for her accomplishments andher altruism.”

Upon receiving the award at the 2016 WITAccelerate! Conference & Expo in Dallas, Hood expressed her gratitude, “I’m blessedand thrilled to be named the ‘2016 InfluentialWoman in Trucking.’ It was a fantastic oppor-tunity to be a part of the panel with the othergreat finalists.” n

It’s no surprise that when you’re a profes-sional driver it’s tough to live a healthy lifestyle.Sitting and working for long hours coupledwith finding time to eat a wholesome meal orexercise has unfortunately made a career intransportation one of the unhealthiest around.

In fact, when the University of Utah Schoolof Medicine conducted an examination of

nearly 50,000 driver medical records, theyfound evidence that drivers’ relatively poorhealth potentially put them in jeopardy inmore than one way. Over 30 percent of drivershad signs of at least one medical conditionthat’s been linked to diminished driving per-formance. As such, it’s an employment andsafety issue as well.

Knowing all of this, it’s paramount that car-riers offer a holistic wellness program. Doingso can help companies attract new drivers, retain employees, and improve safety metrics.Saia LTL Freight’s commitment to its own pro-gram, “Delivering Wellness,” is stronger thanever. Since its inception, we’ve worked tocreate a program that focuses on improvingthe overall health of not only employees, butspouses too.

It’s important that a wellness programreflect that a company’s most valuable assetis its employees. Employees that have a highquality of life are engaged and show increased

productivity—all of which positively impact acompany’s performance.

By providing resources, communicationsand fun challenges, carriers can encouragechanges in behavior and increase employeephysical activity. For instance, Saia’s “Step ItUp” program rewards healthy behaviors in al-most any physical activity in which an employeechooses to participate.

One tenet that Saia’s wellness program hasalways held to is to create an environmentwhere the healthy choice is the easy choice. Ifa company does this and puts employees first, they’ll have a tremendous foundation uponwhich to build their own wellness program. n

Benchmarking DiversityThe confidential information is reported in aggregate to carriers for benchmarking andforecasting. This past year, NTI added twoquestions to their list of research responses:the percentage of women employed as professional drivers and the percentage ofwomen in leadership roles within the company.

Over the course of three quarters, NTIfound the average percentage of female driversat these carriers to be 7 percent. They alsofound that women comprise 24 percent ofmanagement at the carriers surveyed.

In the past, WIT relied on U.S. Departmentof Labor (DOL) data for this information. However, the DOL reports the number of “driver/sales workers and truck drivers” and“industrial truck and tractor operators.” Thejob descriptions for these positions do not accurately represent the responsibilities ofprofessional over-the-road drivers. Based onthe DOL numbers, women represent just 6 percent of the driver population and 18.1 percent of “supervisors of transport-ation and material moving workers.”

“The mission of the Women In Trucking(WIT) Association is to increase the percentage

How many women are in the trucking industry today? The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) is determined to find out.

Last year, the association established the“WIT Index” to better quantify the number ofwomen working as professional drivers and inmanagement at organizations nationwide.Initially, the Index tracked female board mem-bers and executives at 15 publicly traded truck-ing companies nationwide.

To collect even more comprehensive data,WIT has now partnered with the NationalTransportation Institute (NTI), the top researchorganization for driver compensation and benefit information.

“We know that women represent a largelyunderdeveloped minority group in our industry,”says Leah Shaver, NTI’s Chief Operating Officerand a member of the WIT Board of Directors.“We also know, from recent conference dis-cussions and media coverage, that bench-marking gender distribution in our industry is necessary to quantify progress. We’re goingto help trucking companies do just that.”

Every quarter, NTI surveys hundreds of trucking firms for data regarding driverwages, benefits, retirement plans and more.

of women employed in the trucking industryto utilize unrealized potential,” says WIT President and CEO Ellen Voie. “To do this, we must first find out exactly where we aretoday, so we can measure any future changesand explore best practices of carriers thatexcel in attracting and retaining women as both drivers and leaders. With the help of the National Transportation Institute, we’re well on our way to developing an accurate benchmark.” n

Help Us Benchmark

To continue developing the WIT Index, the National Transportation Institute andWomen In Trucking encourage all carriersto share their percentage of female driversand leaders. Please submit your data toNTI at:

......WIT News Briefs.....................While more and more women make

deliberate decisions to work in the trucking in-dustry, historically, many have found themselvesworking in the industry by chance. For most2016 “Member of the Month” honorees, workingin transportation wasn’t their first career choice, but it turned out to be the right choice.

Heather Hutchens was asuccessful optician of over 20years, but she wanted to spendmore time with her husband. Therefore, they completelyswitched gears and started ca-

reers as expediter drivers. Now Hutchens vlogs(video blogs) her road adventures that sheposts on her YouTube channel, TheCraftyTrucker.

Robyn Mitchell spent manyrewarding years teaching, butshe realized that she was readyfor a career remix. She plungedhead-first into the truckingworld and became a profes-

sional driver. Inspired by her life on the road, the Mother Trucker Book Series was born.Today, she travels the country meeting herreaders and fans.

Over the years, JillMaschmeier found herself onone hunt after another as heremployers either closed theirdoors or moved to another city.Seeing an opening with National

Carriers, she thought, “I have no clue what‘compliance in trucking’ means, but let’s give ita try. What can I lose?” Today, she is passionateabout working in transportation. “The excitementof what is going to happen each day keeps mecoming back for more,” she says.

Many women leverage fam-ily connections to get their foot-ing within trucking. After work-ing for years in law enforcement,Gerri davis felt a calling to re-turn to the family business. It

turned out to be the right fit. She successfullyspearheaded and managed many projects forthe company and became one of only three fe-

male dealer principals in North America (in theDaimler Trucks North America organization) asa third-generation owner of Truck City.

Kristy Knichel also joinedthe family business. For the pastnine of her 13 years with thecompany, she has been thePresident and CEO of KnichelLogistics. She says, “I see my

company continuing to grow, and I also seemore women taking on leadership roles as wecontinue to impact this thriving industry andmake names for ourselves.” She was named the2015 “Influential Woman In Logistics” by WITand the Transportation Intermediaries Association.

Since her father was a truckdriver, Cynthia de La Rosa grewup around all things trucking. While she enjoyed the experi-ence of driving, she initiallychose a different career route

in real estate. The economic decline in 2008drove her to reconsider truck driving as a career, and she’s been a professional driver ever since.

Peggy McCullah was a machinist for many years, butshe was left jobless when hercompany relocated its op-erations. With many familymembers in the transportation

industry, she decided to see what it was allabout. Now, she is a successful professionaldriver with over 1 million safe-driving milesand encourages other women to consider work-ing in the industry.

Annette Womack was in-troduced to a career in the in-dustry by her father’s friendwho owned a trucking company.Today, she has over 1.7 millionsafe-driving miles, earned nu-

merous company awards over her 20 yearswith Giant Foods, and has even written a driverroute book for new drivers with the company.“This is an amazing industry, and truck drivingcan be a lucrative career,” she says. “Womencan make an incredible living out here.”

As a Platoon Leader of aconstruction company in theArmy, Michele Zambrano be-came knowledgeable aboutmany types of equipment, rang-ing from a Humvee to a 50-ton

truck. When she joined Waste Management asDistrict Manager, she says, “I quickly realizedthat I found my home. It was very much likebeing back in the field where I belong, leadingtroops. This time, the troops are CDL driversand their equipment is a trash truck.”

With seven years of truck-driving experience in the ArmyNational Guard, Sheili (Shay)torres knew driving for J.B. Huntwould be a perfect match forher. Today, she is one of the first

women to complete the Hunt’s Heroes program. Her advice to potential professional drivers:“Never allow a challenge or even fear to intim-idate you. Being a woman is already powerful, but a woman who knows where she is headingand seeks knowledge . . . that woman is un-stoppable.”

For some women, trans-portation was their first instinct.Jodi edwards, for example, hasbeen in the industry for morethan two decades working forJ.B Hunt. “Trucking empowers

me to live my own life, teaching me that I don’tneed another individual in order to survive. Ithas provided me with a home, good careerand sustainable livelihood,” she says. “I’ll stillbe here until I get my two million miles.”

Shannon Van Roo’s careerpath also has revolved aroundtrucking—as a cashier at a truckstop, a professional driver, co-managing her husband’s truck-ing company, and, now, sup-

porting truckers through Acuity Insurance.“Trucking isn’t just about driving,” she says. “Ittakes many people with a variety of skills andinterests to build a successful company.” n
