ASK AN EXPERT

What caused America’s steep decline in literacy?

In 1930 America was the most literate nation

on earth, then we abandoned phonics, the only

method that can possibly work. Now millions

of Americans can’t read, and almost no one

knows how to teach phonics. But Academic

Associates teachers use the most effective

method ever devised. Our students typically

gain two or more grades levels in reading in

less than 60 hours. Call for our free brochure,

or for an appointment

to see how Academic Associates can help.

What Should a Phonics-Based Reading Program Include?

Effectiveness of course must be considered A thorough comprehensive reading instruction methodology is a complete course in reading, which also aids

-sion and spelling. It should take students step-by-step through all the levels necessary to read competently, so they can comprehend on a level at least as high as their school grade level or higher.

No. Most of them barely scratch the surface. They teach only the basic sounds, and leave out large blocks of essential skills. Some of these programs are helpful, but they are like a puzzle with many missing pieces. They often leave students confused and discouraged. A phonics based reading program with a thorough comprehensive reading

harmonious way.

Many students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia or other learning disabilities have often been through a variety of remedial reading courses, special education classes and other therapies, yet within a few hours a comprehensive reading instruction method enables most of them to read well. Gifted students also receive a boost, often advancing several grade levels (years) in reading skills. With such a method everyone can learn to read well.

Athletic Training in the Texas HeatWhat is heat exhaustion? Heat exhaustion is a heat related illness that is caused by dehydration and high temperatures. This can develop suddenly or by repeated exposure to heat and humidity. Heat exhaustion can lead to a heat stroke, which is an emergency condition.

What are the warning signs of a heat related illness? A person with a heat related illness may appear to have a wide range of symptoms. Early heat exhaustion may present with cool, moist skin, fast pulse, dizziness and a headache. Other signs include pale skin, heavy sweating, panting, excessive thirst, muscle cramps, weakness, nausea and fainting. As the heat illness worsens the signs may include red hot and dry skin, mental confusion, seizure and even coma. Immediate action should be taken as soon as symptoms develop so that the athlete does not develop a heat stroke.

What do you do if your child has a heat related incident? Try to cool them down by bringing them inside or to a shaded area to lie down. Place ice packs under their arm pits, have them drink cool water, place

emergency services immediately. If your child has had a heat related illness before, they are more likely to have a second event and should be watched closely.

What should your child drink while exercising? The best advice is to make sure your child drinks water before, during and after practice. Sports drinks should be selected carefully to make sure they do not have caffeine or high amounts of carbohydrates. Avoid sodas and energy drinks because they can increase dehydration and lead to heat cramps.

What should your child wear to practice?weather because it allows the skin to evaporate sweat. Rubber and tight polyester fabrics can prevent your body from sweating. If you do choose a sweat reducing fabric, choose one that is sleeveless so that more skin is exposed to the air.

Who needs a physical? The UIL requires all middle school and high school athletic participants to receive a physical every year. This mandatory evaluation helps insure the safety of school aged children during athletic activities, but children in youth sports are still not required to be examined. Parents should

Good grooming is an essential aspect of caring for a dog, Brushing is one of the simplest thing things you can do

for your puppy and one of the most necessary. The first time your puppy sees a brush is not an ideal time to attempt a full grooming. A few minutes a day is all it takes to grow accustomed to the experience. When brushing remember to brush its entire body. Be sure to brush down to the skin, not just over the surface of the coat. If long haired be sure to brush in layers from the skin out. Not brushing will cause tangles that are difficult to remove. Most professional grooming is required every 4 to 6 weeks. Pay close attention to the ears and keep them clean and healthy. Certain breeds tend to grow hair inside the canal; this hair can build up from and form a breeding ground for bacteria and infections. Hair in the ear should be plucked. Most people don’t handle their dogs feet until it’s time to clip the nails, then the dog is hard to work with. Touch their feet, rub the pads, play with the nails. Puppies nails grow quickly and should be clipped weekly for several months. Ideally, nails never extend so far that they come in contact with the ground when your dog is standing on a flat surface. No matter what type of dog you have, teaching your pup to enjoy a grooming session will provide a lifetime of healthy benefits. Puppies like humans, are more likely to remain healthy when they are clean and well groomed.

Kalani Hooker, REALTOR®

“THE MOST EXPENSIVE HOME IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD”

Homeownership provides you with a great sense of pride and satisfaction. Your home is a statement about yourself. It is also only human nature to compare your home with those of your friends and neighbors.

If your home is the most expensive home on the block, it may make you feel good, but you could have a problem when the time comes to sell. Surrounding homes of lesser value will have a tendency to lower the price you will get for your home. Most buyers decide upon an offering price that is based on the selling price of other homes in the immediate area. Because neighboring homes have been bringing prices below what you want for your home, a prudent buyer will be

hesitant to invest in a price range above surrounding properties. Some people buy the best home in an area because they are able to buy it at a lesser price than if it was located in an area of equally expensive homes. It seems to make sense when you are the buyer, but you will

Many homeowners have the best house in the area because they have made costly improvements to their home over a period of time. These improvements might have been necessary to provide for the needs of a growing family. They may now, however, have to be considered over- improvements because they have priced your home out of the market. If you are considering making improvements to your home, be sure to add up all the dollars you will have invested in your property by the time improvements are completed.
