ASGA Washington DC Chapter August 2011 Newsletter ___________________________________________ Message From ASGA-DC President It’s August and despite the heat, we’re havin’ fun! Thanks to so many event coordinators who have helped make this a great summer of golf and gathering. Our signature event will be this fall’s Barry Fields and Vince Vigliotti Drive Fore Life Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 17. It’s an opportunity for us to honor our friends and celebrate the club they helped shape. Your response has been so positive! We’re looking forward to a great turnout. Arrive early! It’s a scramble with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. You’ll want to check out and bid on the Silent Auction items, warm up at the range, grab a mini-massage, and meet and greet new and old ASGA friends. Afterwards we’ll gather for drinks and a delicious buffet. Our Awards Dinner will be emcee’ed by Tony Paduano. This is an open event, so feel free to invite fellow golfers, coworkers, family members or anyone who would like to support National Brain Tumor Society and American Heart Association. About Our Chapter Members

Our New Members: Please welcome our newest members!!

Cindy Miller decided to play golf as a child when she dug holes in her back yard and took her folks to Sears to buy a 7 iron, a 9 iron, a putter and a bag of whiffle golf balls. The desire to play "on big boy courses" finally came true after graduate school and has been going strong ever since. Cindy lives in Urbana, Maryland and is Chief of Marketing and Communications for an association in Washington, DC.

Francisco Morales grew up in Colombia and has lived in DC for the past fifteen years. He is learning to play golf and hopes to play with us soon!

Joanne Surico moved to Northern Virginia this past November after spending 13 years in Colorado. She has 15+ years of project management experience and is currently serving as IntelliDyne's PMO Manager on the Health Affairs Tricare Management Activity contract. Joanne has two sons, Greg and Drew, who both live in Colorado and are graduates of the University of Colorado at Boulder. She presently lives in Arlington, VA with her border collie/husky mix dog, Lacey.

Jim Kelly has been playing golf for 35 years and loves the game. An average score for him is the mid-80s. He looks forward to playing more golf and meeting more people.

Other new members include: Carol Brault (Rockville, MD), Donna Breeyear (Alexandria, VA), Gerda Edwards (Alexandria, VA), Jay Hernley (Alexandria), and Mary Kave (Silver Spring, MD). If you wish to see your bio and picture in the September newsletter, please send to our Membership Chair at [email protected].

Welcome To All New Members – We look forward to seeing you at our events!!

Recent Events

Friday, July 15, TopGolf “The Driver” Event, Alexandria, VA - It felt like a late May evening as our merry band arrived at TopGolf - regulars Terrie Patullo, BJ Barger, Liz Anthony and Gary Vyhnalek and newbies Joanne Surico, Gerda Edwards, Ray Garaby and Holi Traeumer. With a live band playing in the background, TopGolf’s Director of Golf, Stephen Moskal, had the Launch Monitor equipment up and running. We were all very interested in the monitor’s smash factor calculation and how the launch monitor could track a golf ball. Stephen also had TopGolf‘s club fitter available with a selection of demo drivers that showed what a difference the new driver technology makes. We found the quiet patio at King Street Blues a very inviting place after the clinic for a late bite to eat. (Event Coordinator: Mark Hendrickson)

Saturday, June 17, Golf at The Osprey’s, Woodbridge, VA - It was a beautiful sunny day at the Osprey's at Belmont Bay. 27 golfers enjoyed the great location on the water – speaking of which, my conservative estimate is that over 100 golf balls were “donated” to the course. Who would have predicted bad traffic on I-95? It delayed or even stopped a few of us, but we were happy to welcome Ken Via, Gerald James and Don Mauritz and new/prospective members Gerta Edwards, Adrienne McAdory and James Scott! Osprey's has six par three holes and we had six winners: Sharon Geyer, Keith Proudfoot, Richard Lewis, Linda Brown, Don Mauritz, and Gerry James. A small group including Mark Hendrickson, Karen Farrington, and Fran Mazarella enjoyed dinner and frozen margaritas at Madigan’s on the Waterfront in Occoquan. (Event Coordinator: BJ Barger)

Oh joy!! Going for a ride in the cart

on a fine, sunny day.

Early finishers waiting for those who

were still searching for errant balls all

around Osprey’s.

Friday, July 22, Happy Hour at P.J. Clarke’s, Washington, DC - We had a nice turnout. Some of the special folks in attendance were Ilene Cook, Mary Doherty, Mark Hendrickson, Mary Kaye, Don Mauritz, Jack McCrery, and Peggy Orchowski. (Event Coordinator: Roger Allan)

Saturday, July 23, Golf at Bull Run, Haymarket, VA – To be rescheduled.

Saturday, July 30, Golf at Renditions, Davidsonville, MD – Everyone enjoyed themselves at the Renditions outing. We managed to finish just as dusk was rolling in, then headed to the bar for prizes. Mary Kaye, a new member, won the longest drive for women and Frank Cyr won the longest drive for men. Closest-to-the-pin winners were: new member and two-time winner Gerta Edwards with 30'8" on hole #2 and 32’3”on hole #17; Mark Hendrickson with 40’ on hole #7; and Jack McCririe with an amazing 14" on hole #13. Several players headed to Mike's Crab House. New member Chuck Guerriero truly enjoyed the crabs; after all, how often do you chow down on luscious Maryland crabs after a golf outing. Thanks to brave 23 who played in the heat. (Event Coordinator: Ellie Hochman)

Friday, August 5, Happy Hour at GolfTec, Tysons Corner, VA - 20 ASGA lads and lasses enjoyed beer, wine, sandwiches, gossip, and individual stroke analyses provided by GolfTEC’s two pros, John Benkovic and Gary Cricks. It was a different kind of happy hour - from the feedback was enjoyable and very constructive. Down side - many of us realized that there is enough correction needed for our strokes to keep us practicing and taking lessons well into the afterlife, or whatever comes next. Among those who benefited from the analyses were: Sandy Koubek, Adrienne McAdory, Ann Webster, Anne DeSena, Ashton Carlton, Brenda Mara, Francesca Mazarella, Jim Johndrow, Irene Kratky, Lee Ann Jensen, Steve Goldbeger, Joanne Surico, Linda Brown, Mark Hendrickson, and Sue Woida. (Event Coordinator: Richard Lewis)

Saturday, August 6, Golf at 1757, Dulles, VA - 36 of ASGA-DC’s finest lined up, clubs in tow, to compete for the coveted 2011“Battle of the Sexes” commemorative medal - a nice addition to the event. We had quite a few new members who we hope to see again. We had several visitors and alums, including Marty Burack now living in Florida, Sharon Davies visiting from Italy, Shenandoah chapter members Paul Gorodnick and Brenda Rossi, and alums Pat and Deanna McVeigh. See Paul’s photos on our Yahoo Group page (click on “Photos” on the home page). Winners of closest-to-the-pin honors were Mary Doherty, Frank Cyr, and Gerry James. Neil Mark sank a 33 footer to win the longest putt. Now for the “tough” part…as the Event Coordinator, it is my duty to tell you (men) – the Women of ASGA-DC are the 2011 winners of the “Battle of the Sexes!!! – rah. Actually, I must say to the women, “It was well earned, and you all deserved it”. (I’m trying, OK?) After golf, everyone left for dinner – except for a few disheartened men who went to the driving range to get ready for next year’s rematch (no, not really). See you all there again next year, (and congrats again ladies!) Event Coordinator: David Sheets)

The Wit and Wisdom of Golf “Don’t let your golf game determine your attitude, let your attitude determine your golf game” (Sports psychologist Bob Rotella to Darren Clarke before the Sunday round of the 2011 British Open) If I had cleared the trees and drove the green, it would’ve been a great shot. (Sam Snead) In golf I’m one under; one under a tree, one under a rock, and one under a bush. (Gerry Cheevers)

Trees

I think that I shall never see a hazard rougher than a tree;

A tree o'er which my ball must fly if on the green it is to lie.

A tree, which stands that green to guard, and makes the shot extremely hard; A tree whose leafy arms extend to kill the six iron shot I send.

A tree that stands in silence there, while angry golfers rave and swear. Irons were made for fools like me who cannot ever miss a tree.

Golf Rules Made Simple:

Player's lie affected by sand from other golfer's bunker shot: Larry's ball was in a sand bunker. Scott's ball was on the apron between the green and the bunker. Larry hit his bunker shot lifting with the ball what seemed like more sand than was possible. The sand sprayed and settled around Scott's ball. Scott said he was going to mark and lift his ball so that he could use his hand to clean the area of the sand that Larry had deposited with his bunker shot. Larry protested saying Scott was not allowed to improve his lie. Who was right? What is the correct ruling?

A) Well, Larry has to get some of these answers right. In this case, he is correct - play the ball as in lies.

B) Scott is correct. He can improve his lie. Well, in actuality, not improve the lie, but restore it back to its initial at-rest status.

And the answer is.... B - Scott is entitled to the lie and line of play he had when his ball came to rest. According to equity (Rule 1-4), Scott is entitled to remove the sand deposited by Larry's shot as well as lift and clean his ball, without penalty. Sorry Larry…. (Contributed by Janice Bittner)
